We talked about plantain ointment we found in the new issue of Backwoods Home Magazine. Granddaughter and I scoured the neighborhood and finally found some. We melted a small jar of Vaseline in a saucepan on medium heat. Added about 12 small leaves of plantain that we washed well. I coarsely chopped the leaves and added them to the vaseline. It foamed up halfway up the pan. We left it to cook till it foamed down and the leaves were crispy. Turned off the heat and let it cool a bit so it didn't melt the plastic jar. Strained it with a tea strainer back into the jar and added 3 drops of tea tree oil for it's healing properties.

The kids will be using this ointment for mosquito bites and other itchies. I don't know if we used enough leaves or not, but we shall see. If I have to make more, I think I will use coconut oil as the carrier. It isn't as sticky as vaseline. Lard could be used in a pinch. The method is pretty much the same with whatever medicinal herb you need to use. Just don't use too much heat and burn it.

This combination should make a nice first aid cream because the plantain contains vitamin K which helps to clot the blood in the wound and the tea tree oil is antibacterial to keep it from infecting.

I also make my own mouthwash because I am allergic to most of what is available on the market. I make an herbal tea from whatever I like at the moment. I have used decorticated cardamom seeds to make fake Listerine. The last I made I used ginger root boiled into a strong tea and added some stevia to sweeten it a bit. To 1 quart of strong ginger tea I added 1/2 cup of Everclear, 25 drops of tea tree oil, and 1/2 teaspoon of food grade glycerine to keep the oil in suspension. It has a bite from the ginger, but it will keep the gums in top shape.

When I think of more, I will post more. If anyone has questions, I will attempt to answer them. I am by no means an expert or anything, just passing along some of the things that I use myself that I thought might come in handy for some of you who want to start out easy. I don't mess with dangerous herbs as I don't have enough knowlege to use them safely, but I do use the safer ones. Always use them with caution and common sense.
