From the section Europe

A German policewoman has been seriously wounded in a shooting at a Munich suburban railway station, police say.

Several others were also wounded in the incident at Unterföhring S-Bahn station. One person has been arrested. The circumstances remain unclear.

Bavarian state radio, BR, quoted police as saying it was not a terrorist incident.

A huge police operation is under way in the northern suburb of Unterföhring, and rail services have been disrupted.

Police officer, others injured in Munich subway shooting

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BERLIN — Jun 13, 2017, 4:02 AM ET

Several people were injured, including a police officer, in a shooting early Tuesday at a Munich subway station, police said.

Munich police said in a tweet that the policewoman's injuries were serious. The suspect was also injured and is in custody.

The shooting occurred during a morning police check at the Unterfoehring subway station, Munich police spokesman Michael Riehlein said.

He had no further details, but Munich's Merkur newspaper reported that witnesses said the suspect took a police officer's pistol and shot her, and also injured others at the scene.

Riehlein said the area has been secured and that there was no danger to the wider public.

Don't German police teach firearm retention or did perhaps the woman not have the physical strength to keep her attacker at bay so she could draw her firearm? Things to think about.

If you need a gun just call 911 and a cop will bring you one.

You just have to be man enough to take it from him (or her in this case).

My former business partner got assigned to the High School one day when he was a deputy. Three gang banger yutes (about 6 03 and 220 lbs) decided they would take his gun and jumped him in the cafeteria, the attack started by the biggest one sucker punching him right in the jaw. He beat that punk into the ground while the other two picked up wooden chairs, held them over their heads and began moving in. He introduced them to Mr Glock and they decided that bringing a chair to a gun fight was a bad idea. The school lost their minds with him for pulling a gun on "Children" in a school. He never had to work the school again so all ended well.

I don't know about Germany, but I know a lot of places in Europe (including Ireland) have cut the budgets for police so that often instead of patrolling with a partner they are either alone or fairly separated in terms of physical space; even if two officers are technically in the same place.

This makes it extremely easy, for motivated people (like gang banger, terrorists or other criminals) to simply overpower an officer if they really want to; this has also been part of the "discussion" around arming the traditionally unarmed British "Bobbies" who patrol neighborhoods (often alone, sometimes in pairs) and the same is true of the Irish Guards who are trained in firearms but I'm not sure they always carry them (I think some do and some don't).

I think the Germans will have to take another look at single officers in very public places (especially these days) because while it is possible to overpower two people, it is usually going to take more than one very strong person to do it.

A retention holster won't slow your draw that much, if you have any situational awareness at all.
