It is quite proper, in fact, for a potato to be a member of a same sex family.
Potatoes can reproduce and grow new plants from tuber and roots as off shoots of a single potato plant.
In addition, a potato can reproduce sexually from, male gametes and female ovules, male and female flower parts, on the same plant.

So, a single potato can be both sexes and neither.

However, we do not call 40 acres of potatoes a family . . . a happy meal maybe . . . but not a family
and certainly not gender neutral.

Human beings are not potatoes
