FOOD Morel Season Underway

Blacknarwhal

Let's Go Brandon!
Was out walking yesterday, and spotted several morel mushrooms coming up. With storms likely tonight, that ought to help fire things up.

Anyone out hunting for the little fungal treasures?

Beautiful!

May at the eeearliest here, aand usually not until the last couple weeks or week. Our season here is less than a month usually end or May to end of June. Do good on recently cleared power lines, building lots, or anywhere Cottonwood/poplar roots have been disturbed, and there is disturbed or bare soil.

And of course the wild fires. We have a few big one every year so there is always option to travel to one of the past few years burns... Alaska is a huge state though, the one I wanted to go to last year aand may this year is near Fairbanks, about 5 hours North of here. A few year ago we drove south to the Funny River Burn on the Kenai peninsula...about 5 hours from here

Ultra MAGA!
Around here the Morels are ready about the same time as fishing season opens, first weekend of May.

Looking forward to fly fishing again and hunting Morels while hiking to my favorite spots on the streams. Nothing beats grilled trout, sauteed morels, and buttered potatoes with warm blueberry pie topped with vanilla ice cream for desert. This meal usually only happens twice a year (sometimes not at all if the fishing weather is ugly) but it's better than Thanksgiving and Christmas meals combined.

I find a few on our property but lots on the property next to us. Just started coming up this week. I found 16 yellow morels and one of our sons found about 50 2 days earlier. The tallest one I found was just over 6 inches tall. Easy to spot. Yellow morels are the largest morels around here in southern Illinois. The biggest one I ever found was 11 inches tall many years ago.
