'Exponential surge' in Mpox cases with thousands dead in outbreak which is ‘mainly affecting children’
www.the-sun.com

CASES of Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DCR) have surged at an 'exponential' rate, health officials have warned.

The clade I strain detected in the DRC causes more severe illness and deaths than the clade II virus that is known for triggering the global outbreak in 2022.

A new deadly strain of mpox has been discovered in the Congo

Symptoms associated with monkeypox
Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 11,166 suspected cases, including about 450 deaths have been reported in the country, according to a new report.

Many children have been infected, including newborn babies during pregnancy.

Patrick Muyaya, a Congolese government spokesperson, said the report revealed "an exponential increase in the number of cases".

It comes just days after the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned of the threat of a new strain of mpox described as "the most dangerous yet".

The latest outbreak shows "no sign of slowing down", said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Cases are being driven by sexual transmission but there is evidence this particular strain can also be passed on through close skin-to-skin contact, which makes it more dangerous.

Clade I is also more deadly than clade II, with a fatality rate of around five per cent in adults and 10 per cent in children, compared to three per cent for its predecessor.

A worldwide epidemic of mpox two years ago was brought under control by vaccinating vulnerable groups, which were mostly men who slept with men.

But there is poor access to vaccines and medications in DR Congo and local health officials are warning the virus could reach other countries.

"The disease can go through airports," said Leandre Murhula Masirika, at the health department in South Kivu province - one of the worst affected areas in DR Congo.

Mpox doctor issues warning over spike in cases around Pride month with troubling cluster of 13 new infections in 3 weeks
"A person with lesions can go through borders because there are no controls.

"I'm very afraid it's going to cause more damage."

The third person who died was a 40-year-old man from the KwaZulu-Natal province who had mpox-like symptoms, including a rash all over his body.

"He passed away at home and the results came back positive for mpox on June 23, 2024," it added in a statement.

In South Africa, three people have died, with at least 16 laboratory-confirmed cases, the country's health ministry said.

The current case figures are "the tip of the iceberg", said Prof Trudie Lang, professor of global health research at the University of Oxford.

"It's definitely the most dangerous strain yet.

Mpox lesions go through four stages, from flat spots to raised spots, to blisters to scabs
"We don’t know how many non-severe cases are hidden."

'Horrendous' symptoms
Jean Claude Udahemuka, from the University of Rwanda, who has been studying the outbreak, said there is also evidence of transmission in schools and from mums or carers to children.

The disease appears to be causing miscarriages among pregnant women, as well as "horrendous whole body rashes" and other lingering symptoms.

Previously, it caused lesions more limited to the genital area.

These significant differences from previous mpox strains are "incredibly worrying," Prof Lang said.

She added: "There is definitely the opportunity for this to get on a plane," so countries around the world - including those in Europe - could be at risk through travel.

"We need to be really vigilant now and try to move to contain it."

All countries should be preparing for this new strain "before it spreads to other places, before it is too late," Udahemuka added.

In April, researchers warned: "Without intervention, localised outbreaks harbour the potential to spread nationally and internationally.

"Given the recent history of mpox outbreaks in Congo, we advocate for swift action by endemic countries and the international community to avert another global mpox outbreak."

What is Mpox?
Mpox, formally known as monkeypox, is a viral infection that spreads through close contact, causing flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions.

A milder version of mpox sparked a global epidemic in 2022 when it spread to more than 100 countries - including the UK.

Symptoms of mpox include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion.

A rash can develop, often beginning on the face, which then spreads to other parts of the body, including the genitals.

The rash can look like chickenpox or syphilis, and scabs can form which then fall off.

The incubation period is usually from six to 13 days but can range from five to 21 days.

Mpox in the UK
Government data has shown 3,553 cases of mpox were recorded in the UK in 2022.

The Department for Health has said: “The outbreak has mainly been in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men without documented history of travel to endemic countries.”

But cases have fallen sharply in the past six months as a result of vaccination and testing.

At the time of writing, only 20 cases have been recorded in the UK in 2023.

The most obvious mpox symptom is the hallmark spots.

According to the NHS, these lesions go through four stages, from flat spots to raised spots, to blisters to scabs.

But people are also likely to experience flu-like symptoms, which will begin between five and 21 days after infection.

The symptoms often get better by themselves over two to four weeks.

The NHS says these include:

Inflammation of the rectum (proctitis) – for example, pain or bleeding from your back passage
High temperature (fever)
Headache
Flu-like symptoms, including muscle and back aches, shivering and tiredness
Swollen glands that feel like new lumps (in the neck, armpits or groin)
If you have some of these symptoms and believe you could have monkeypox, you should stay at home, avoid close contact with others and get medical help by phone until you’re assessed.

There are some complications associated with mpox, such as bacterial infection from skin lesions, mpox affecting the brain (encephalitis), heart (myocarditis) or lungs (pneumonia),

Mpox is on the rise in Australia, prompting calls to limit intimate partners and keep contact tracing details

By Annika Burgess

In short:

Mpox is on the rise across Australia, with 152 cases recorded so far this year after only 26 in 2023.
Several states have issued health alerts after clusters of the virus spiked over recent weeks.

What's next?

Vaccinations are being recommended for groups at most risk, in addition to keeping records of sexual partners for contact tracing.
Australia is experiencing a resurgence of mpox, with infections this year surpassing the 2022 outbreak.
So far, 152 cases have been recorded across the country, prompting alerts from state health departments.
Victoria is experiencing the largest outbreak with 83 cases.
Of those, 25 per cent were reported in the last fortnight, the state's Chief Health Officer (CHO), Clare Looker, said.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, spreads through close physical contact, and anyone can contract it.
But infections are most common in men who have sex with men.
In addition to vaccinations, health officials are advising people to limit their sexual partners and keep details for contact tracing.

What is mpox?

Mpox is a viral disease which until recently had rarely been seen outside central and west Africa.

What we know about mpox

An unusual outbreak of monkeypox has now spread to at least 15 countries. Here's what we know about the disease, which is rarely seen outside of Africa.

Rhonda Stuart, director of public health and infection prevention at Monash Health, described it as a cousin of smallpox.
It mainly causes a rash, alongside other symptoms including fever, headaches and muscle aches and pains.
"The mpox rash tends to occur where the contact has been made," Professor Stuart said.
"The rash can become very painful in certain areas, but most people don't require hospitalisation."
Similar to chickenpox, the rash will disappear after two to four weeks and most people don't need medical treatment to recover.

Anyone who has been in close and usually prolonged intimate contact with someone with the virus is at risk.
Transmission is also possible through body fluids, coughing or sneezing, and objects such as linen and towel, but it is less common.

Mpox symptoms

  • A distinctive rash, lesions (bumps that turn into pimples, blisters or sores)
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Chills
  • Exhaustion
Thorne Harbour Health, which provides wellbeing services for LGBTIQ+ communities and people living with HIV, said symptoms associated with the current outbreak appeared to be less obvious.
People are not always presenting with the rash, so the virus can be mistaken for a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Testing for mpox is not part of a standard sexual health screen, so people are being advised to specifically ask doctors to be tested for the virus.

Where are the clusters?

Australia experienced its first mpox outbreak in 2022 when the virus started emerging in multiple countries where the illness had not usually been seen.

WHO declares end to mpox public health emergency

The World Health Organization says mpox is no longer a public health emergency, ending a nearly year-long alert for the disease.

It triggered The World Health Organization (WHO) to declare the disease a global health emergency, which was rescinded after about a year.
There were 144 cases recorded in Australia in 2022, which were mainly driven by international travellers bringing the virus into the country.
The outbreak was brought under control, and last year there were only 26 cases.
"We had a little peak, and that sort of decreased with a number of interventions, including routine contact tracing, getting people vaccinated and some behavioural changes," Professor Stuart said.
"That really put an end to the outbreak, and we only saw a handful of cases in 2023."

This year, local transmission has been causing most of the infections, and health alerts have been raised across several states.
NSW issued a safety notice last week with 22 cases reported over three weeks, compared with one in the previous six months.
As of July 25, there were 43 cases reported, according to the health department's National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS).
Queensland raised the alert in May when 10 locally acquired cases were recorded that month in the state's largest ever mpox cluster. It now has 17 cases.
Victoria's outbreak has climbed to 83 infections this year, of which about 90 per cent have been locally acquired.

Professor Stuart said the virus re-emergence was likely due to the public dropping their guard, rather than a new virus strain.
"There's a fear when something new comes so it initially creates behavioural change, but like with COVID we got vaccines and then got on with our normal lives," she said.

Who should get vaccinated?

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against the virus.
Vaccinations are recommended for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, sex workers and people with HIV who may be at risk of exposure to mpox.
Peter Locke, Thorne Harbour's director of HIV and clinical support services, said the community has been quick to respond to health advice.
The organisation has established free vaccination pop-up clinics across Melbourne, and hundreds of people have come through in recent weeks.
"Like we saw with the initial mpox outbreak in 2022, we've seen a fantastic response from our communities as they're keen to take control of their sexual health and wellbeing," Mr Locke said.
"We now have plenty of vaccine available across Australia, and eligibility for vaccination has recently been expanded … The vaccine is free, and you don't need Medicare."

Free vaccination clinics are being run across cities experiencing outbreaks. (ABC News)
The vaccine is given in two doses about 28 days apart, which decreases both the chances of contracting mpox and its severity.
But, it doesn't eliminate the risk completely.
"It's important to know that some people still get mpox," Professor Stuart said.
"So just because you're double vaccinated doesn't mean you won't get it. That's an important message for the community."

Should you limit intimate partners?

In addition to vaccines, health departments are advising people to reduce their risk through behavioural changes.

Dr Looker, Victoria's CHO, has suggested maintaining contact details of sexual partners.
"The recent rise in cases means we also want people to think about reducing their risk in other ways, which could mean limiting the number of intimate partners, and ensuring they're sharing contact details to help with contact tracing if needed," Dr Looker told the ABC.
Mr Locke said advice around intimate partners "really comes down to what works for the individual".
"If you're immunocompromised or unvaccinated, mpox can lead to serious health complications," he said.
"If that's the case for you, then yes limiting sexual partners might be a good way to reduce your risk in the short term."
He added that certain messaging could generate stigma for gay and bisexual communities, but the reality was anyone could acquire mpox.
"Men who have sex with men have proven they're very capable of looking after their sexual health and played a central role in stopping the outbreak of mpox in 2022," he said.

BTW, I think a REALLY BAD ONE IS COMING. This winter or when everything crashes, and if that happens in the next 8 months after Trump wins, it will be intentional.

A really "BAD ONE" of what?

(I could assume MPOX based on the thread, but you know what they say about assuming...)

A real plague. Maybe Marburg. There were claims that the Marburg gene was found in some of the spike vaxx. Who knows. Just worse than the Wuhan Flu, which was a flop. 99.99% survival by most. Come on man!

But "They" got hundreds of millions around the world to get the death shot. They used fear of dying or hospitalization from this virus to drive people into taking their death shots. Those delayed deaths were the goal, plus the fear and control measures implemented.

Just FTR, Whu-Hu-Flu actually had a much closer to 97.5% fatality rate. 2.5% fatality rate. 97.5% SURVIVAL rate

Uh... what? MAYBE 97.5% survival rate...but I doubt that included undiagnosed cases whose symptoms never got bad enough for them to bother getting tested.

Given the CCP was pushing this so hard, I have to wonder if that only applied if you were a multiple organ transplantee like most senoir CCP members are. Any cold to organ recipients can be deadly due to immune system suppression.

Only worry about what you can control!
Covid changed my thinking, we are now employed from home, we left the beach (5 years was enough of that) moved back to the rural mountains of WV, hooked up Starlink and are prepared to stay here a very long time. Church can be live on YouTube, food, meds and other necessities are on hand, we have wells with electric pumps, and can hand pump, water filtration, septic system, some solar, plenty of propane and wood for cooking and non-ethanol gasoline stored and treated to run the generators a few hours a day for warm showers and keeping the freezer cold. But we have pulled a lot of freezer stuff out, freeze dried or canned it. I’m not going out to play with the idiots again. The garden, orchard, herbs and berries did well again this year.

I am working a high powered full time job from home, and also working mid-nights stocking the local Wal-Mart, however Walmart can be stopped without warning, it was just extra cash at $20 an hour to speed things along. I have no plans to be anywhere near the masses next time!

I was so disgusted by the images coming out of the Olympics that it blinded me to the possibility that France will be the epicenter of clade one-b monkeypox in 19 days or so. But by then the airlines will already spread it all over the world.

Muzito and Ssengonzi had company of coach Tonnie Kasujja as well as World Aquatics technical official Max Kanyerezi, from Uganda Swimming Federation and Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) officials as they checked out the Paris La Défense Arena on Wednesday and Thursday.

Unlike other top nations, Team Uganda’s contingent at the Paris Olympics had only four competitors in France before Friday evening’s opening ceremony.

On Saturday, rower Kathleen Noble was the country's first competitor and got her second Olympics nod after featuring in the women’s single sculls Heat 1 at the National Olympic Nautical Stadium of Île-de-France in Vaires-sur-Marne.

She had spent nearly a week in Paris before competing. And like Noble, her compatriots in the Olympic Village; cyclist Charles Kagimu, swimmers Gloria Muzito and Jesse Ssengonzi are having a feel of the city and venues before competing.

“It feels good; it’s a great pool so I am excited to swim in it,” said Ssengonzi, who will compete in the men’s 100m butterfly Heats on Friday. “The water feels really fast,” he added.

“It’s so nice. The Arena is amazing,” said Muzito who will swim in the women’s 100m freestyle Heats on Tuesday. Muzito and Kagimu carried Uganda’s flag on Friday during the opening ceremony parade via boat on the River Seine.
Kagimu will compete in the men’s individual road race of about 275km at Pont d’Iéna, a bridge over the Seine which links the Eiffel Tower on the left bank to the district of Trocadéro on the right bank on August 3.

“To get some training in and continue to get ready for my race next Saturday. The weather is okay, it’s quite warm but not so hot so far. And if it stays this way, it will really be good,” said Kagimu after a practice session.

The athletes had limited access to facilities on Friday as the organizers limited movement out of the Games’ Village, to allow smooth preparations for the opening ceremony.

Oh, my. How could such a juicy opportunity ignored by 'the dark side'...

Incubation period 3-17 days, according to once source.

Better dig out my calendar...

WAG - about 3 weeks at the outside to confirmation (assuming the reportage is honest... ), assuming Paris is in fact a possible nexus.
(I'm not setting 'dates' - just trying to logic it out should there be an issue at Paris re: MPox)

I'm really going out on a limb, here, what's everyone's thinking on this possible threat?

I feel that the threat is over 70%. We know there are outbreaks in Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. We expect that there will soon be announced that it is also in Uganda. Each of those countries has a handful of athletes at the games. It is very ominous that all four of those nations have one man and one woman competing in the swimming events.
Brandon, of the Last Days YouTube who predicted Trump being shot, says he was shown something terrible happens at the swimming events during the Olympics.
