Does anyone know how to get mold off a leather biker jacket? My Mom got it for me when I was 16 and it means the world to me. Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

First take it outside and brush off the mold, so the spores dont' spread in the house....mild soapy water with a clean cloth or sponge. Wipe clean. Let dry out of sun and away from heat...follow with a leather conditioner.
If it's REAL bad...use water and rubbing alcohol in equal parts. Then wipe with water only on a clean cloth, wipe dry, then again, let it dry away from heat and sun...and again , follow with a leather conditioner.

Mold on leather is a booger...

Take it to the dry cleaners? :shr:

I had some suede jackets with some mold/mildew on them from being in the garage next to the laundry vent. And they both came out good-as-new - $80 some odd dollars later (total for both), but good as new!

I heard to use vinegar on lether mold. I have never done it or seen it but that is what I recall.

I'm sure the PH would be a good thing to kill the mold.

How to Clean Mold from Leather

1 Clean with a pH balanced leather wash that will not strip or dry out leather. This prepares the leather for a leather restorer/conditioner.

2 Apply restorer/conditioner with sponge to prevent buildup in stitching or around metal. Let the product do the work to restore conditioning to the interior of leather, enhance flexibility so leather lasts longer, enhance any faded areas (ex: sun-bleached or dry furniture leather) and prevent mold & mildew spores from multiplying. A good conditioner is biodegradable and EPA approved.

I'll second the dry cleaning. That will kill anything.

No it doesn't.
but a product called odo ban, does kill all kinds of mold and mildew. can be bought at a sams club.
probably other stores as well. you can probably google it. My Dr told me about this product. Kills just about everything.

Some pretty good suggestions here, and I'll toss mine in. Use a lubricant/all around protectant called Ballistol. It's an all natural oil that's been around a hundred years or so. Smells like stinky feet (the smell goes away after a couple of hours), it will kill the mold as well as nourishing the leather without over softening it...and if it's moldy, the leather needs some conditioner. It also adds some water resistance on the way. It's the only thing I've used on my 20 some year old cycle leather from "Back in my earlier Punk Years", and it's still in stellar shape. Actually, it's in better shape then I am.;)

Oh, here's a link: www.balistol.com. It's an item every prepper should have, as it's mighty versatile for wood, leather, metal, electrical connections, etc. Don't prep without it!;)

Yep, and you can use Balistol on your guns too!

BTW - this thread reminded me that I have a black leather jacket that I haven't worn in years because I "outgrew" it.

I just took it out of the closet, tried it on and it FITS now! :lkick:

This thread is useful, DH has a leather jacket that means the world to him that has mold on it also. I brought it to the Dry cleaner and they wouldn't touch it..... said it was incredibly difficult and they wouldn't be held responsible for it :( I'm going to try some of these -

OK

Here's one.

"Bloom" Leather bloom from an expensive piece of leather (coat, jacket)

Not a problem. Bloom comes out on

a piece of unused leather. Should just wipe off.

Mold won't come off easy. Use a lubricent type cleaner that will feed the leather, not eat or dry it up.

I showed horses for 20 years, and once in a while a saddle or my chaps would get some mold on them from leaving them in the tack compartment of the trailer. I just took some water and some saddle soap and scrubbed them with a brush. No biggie. Then let them dry in the shade.

I even would dye suede chaps in the washing machine and then add half a bottle of Downy fabric softener on the final rinse...They would be like brand new.

Thanks guys, sorry I didn't reply sooner. I will look over these suggestions again when I'm not blind tired and let everyone know the status and what I tried. Thanks again, hope this works...
