Health officials in Michigan are monitoring eight people for possible exposure to the deadly Ebola virus, but none is showing symptoms, the Michigan Department of Community Health says.

The move is precautionary, spokeswoman Angela Minicuci said today, noting that the individuals are being monitored for various reasons including their travel history or people with whom they have been in contact.

"At this point just because we're monitoring people, there's still an extremely low risk of Ebola in Michigan," Minicuci said.

The health department is not releasing any identifying information about the individuals, including their county of residence, Minicuci said.

"We're protecting the rights and the privacy of these individuals," she said. "These aren't positive cases at this time."

If any of the individuals test positive for Ebola, the department will release more information, Minicuci said.

Symptoms of Ebola include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and unexplained bleeding or bruising, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which notes that "symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola, but the average is 8 to 10 days."

Minicuci would not say when the monitoring began, but said health officials had been telling media outlets about it this week.

The Free Press reported earlier this month that a Liberian man visiting family in Oak Park was being monitored, but he was not showing symptoms then.

Apparently, the doctor was a graduate of Wayne State University.

Also, per some Twitter posts, the 8 in Michigan are in different counties. Don't like that one bit. Especially since I have a family member in the hospital right now.

What in the world is that about? Wayne State U medical grad student tests positive? Is this that stupid doctor who went bowling or another case? I can't keep up.

Way too close to home. I know they want to protect the privacy of these people, but a little more info would be helpful. Like at least location. Unreal.

That is Dr. Spencer who is being treated in NYC. Spooked me pretty good, too!

Interesting that they were discovered through screening at the airport. They are still not giving locations.

The Michigan Department of Community Health says it is monitoring ten people for signs of the Ebola virus.

Ten people in Michigan are being monitored for the Ebola virus, according to the Department of Community Health.

None of those people have any known exposure to the virus and none are showing symptoms, said Public Information Officer Jennifer Smith, and further, there is no increased risk to the public.

They are low risk individuals who are being monitored as a precaution, she said. They will look for Ebola symptoms twice a day and report back to state health officials.

MCDH is not releasing the location of the individuals for privacy reasons, but stresses it is in constant contact with local health departments.

The state became aware of the ten people when they passed through airports with enhanced screening procedures. They were referred to the state when it was learned Michigan was their final destination.
