McCain and Obama Look to Woo Hispanic Voters
by Associated Press
Tuesday, July 8, 2008

WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama sought to link Republican rival John McCain to President George W. Bush’s economic policies, as the two presidential candidates maneuvered for the upper hand on an issue that is of key concern of voters.

The economy, and especially its impact on the middle class, has emerged as the focus of the presidential campaign, given skyrocketing fuel prices, high job losses and rising food costs. It is a tough issue for Republicans, with Bush’s approval ratings at low levels after two terms in office.

McCain and Obama were due to speak separately Tuesday at the League of United Latin American Citizens’ national convention, as each woos Hispanic voters, a demographic that traditionally skews to the Democrats but that was important to Bush’s election as a Texas governor and to his two presidential campaigns.

Both candidates were launching weeklong efforts to highlight their differences on the economy.

Obama said that McCain offers a third term of Bush’s policies.

“John McCain’s policies are essentially a repeat, a regurgitation of what we’ve been hearing from the Republican Party over the last two decades, maybe three,” Obama said Monday in St. Louis, where his plane made an unscheduled stop because of mechanical problems that forced him to cancel an appearance in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It’s part of the reason that we’re in the situation that we find ourselves in right now.”

McCain has been forced into a more defensive crouch because his party has held the White House while jobs, home values, stock prices and consumer confidence have tumbled.

While calling Obama’s plans expensive and unwise on Monday, he tried to distance himself from his fellow Republican Bush where he could.

“This Congress and this administration have failed to meet their responsibilities to manage the government,” McCain said in Denver. “Government has grown by 60 percent in the last eight years. That is simply inexcusable.”

He promised to veto “every single bill with wasteful spending.”

McCain has said the economy is not his strong suit, and on Monday he seemed eager to show a deeper understanding of the topic, even as he dismissed experts.

“Some economists don’t think much of my gas tax holiday,” he said of his plan to temporarily suspend the federal levy on motor fuels. “But the American people like it, and so do small business owners.”

Obama calls that plan a gimmick that will not lower gasoline prices.

The Democratic senator favors tax cuts for middle-class workers and tax increases for top earners. He calls for substantial government subsidies for health care, college, retirement and alternative energies.

McCain pledges to cut taxes for all and raise them on none. Government should shrink, not grow, he told his audience in Denver.

Aides to McCain said he would balance the budget by the end of his first term, although Obama said the Republican has not come close to explaining plausibly how he would do so. McCain has given mixed signals in recent months over whether he would make it a priority to balance the budget within four years, a goal that most economists consider to be at odds with McCain’s call for continued tax cuts.

McCain restated his support of free trade, though acknowledging it “is not a positive for everyone.” He promised to retrain workers who lose their jobs to overseas plants.

Obama has said he would revisit major trade pacts such as the North America Free Trade Agreement. He said in Monday’s prepared remarks that he believes in free trade, but the cause is not helped “when we pass trade agreements that hand out favors to special interests and do little to help workers who have to watch their factories close down. There is nothing protectionist about demanding that trade spreads the benefits of globalization as broadly as possible.”

As the candidates hammered out their economic platforms, a new Associated Press-Yahoo News poll shows they also may have some work to do on their images.

When the people polled were asked to blurt out their first words about the candidates, one in five said “change” or “outsider” for Obama and “old” for McCain, according to the poll released Monday. Those are not only the top responses for each man but the answers that have grown the most since January, when fewer than one in 10 volunteered those descriptions.

Lack of experience is the next most frequently offered view of Obama, 46, the Democrat who came to the Senate from Illinois less than four years ago; for McCain, 71, the Republican senator from Arizona and Vietnam prisoner of war, it is his military service.

Obama is seen as warmer and more empathetic, McCain stronger and tougher. When people are asked whether specific words and phrases apply to each man, the Democrat does 12 percentage points better for caring about “people like you” and is 11 points more likable. McCain has a 24-point edge as a military leader and is 9 points more decisive.

McCain is seen as more capable on hard-edged problems like Iraq, terrorism and guns, while Obama is preferred on domestic matters like the economy, the environment and education.

The AP-Yahoo News poll, conducted by Knowledge Networks, has surveyed about 2,000 people since November to gauge how individuals’ views are changing during the presidential campaign.

Perhaps illustrating his “change” image, Obama confirmed Monday that he will break from tradition to accept the Democratic presidential nomination at a Denver sports stadium that can seat 76,000 people, rather than at the smaller site that is hosting the party’s national convention across town.

That would allow more people to attend the historic event in August, as Obama officially becomes the first black nominee of a major U.S. political party. Most of the convention will take place at the 21,000-seat Pepsi Center.

Separately, one official confirmed that Obama’s aides were attempting to arrange a speech at a second dramatic venue: Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, part of Obama’s July trip to Europe and the Middle East.

The Gate was the site of one of former President Ronald Reagan’s most memorable speeches. On a trip in July 1987, Reagan, a Republican, stood before throngs of West Berliners and implored then Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall dividing the city. The wall is no longer there.

As an over 60 white middle class woman, I'm feeling disenfrachised and wonder how long this sh-t is going to go on before we rise up and tell Obama AND McCain to shove it, we're not interestd in either of them!

I wish I had not watched the local news coverage at noon of this local appearance of the saviour.:kk2::kk2:
They were dancing in the aisles and doing a wave like in the ballpark waiting on him to arrive. :kk2:People were lined up at 4:30 this morning apparently in order to get up close seating.
There are certain types that I think will get way too big for their britches so to speak if this guy makes it.

If O makes it, those certain types who get way too big for their britches will be in for one heckuva surprise. As they say, pride cometh before the fall.

I find this "saviour" angle that they're pushing to be quite unsettling. Sorta like worshipping idols, or false Gods, IMO. No way would I put so much faith in one man...

Surprise, do you speak of McCain or Obama? I'm guessing Obama because of the venue and the entheusiasm that you described.

Hispanics are the ethnic group most in play. McCain was thought to be their favorite because of his support of certain 'amnesty" legislation. Obama was thought to be at a disadvantage because Sen. Clinton had been the favorite of the hispanic voters in the primary campaign.

Hispanics comprise in excess of 30% in New Mexico and important percentages in a number of other states. Most states are either red or blue but a shade of some kind of purple. A little push one way or the other from hispanic voters could very well elect one candidate or defeat the other.

I'm more concerned about McCain's preference for high stakes craps vs. Obama's preference for poker.

That's why we must concentrate on electing (or re-electing) Republican Senators and Reps.

Yep Obama.

Evening news said the folks were actually lined up at 2:00 am rather than the 4:30 I originally heard.

And FWIW, I did not see a Hispanic face in the crowd. Wall to wall blacks interspersed with a white face here and there.
The local veterinarian who is from Pakistan was interviewed leaving the event.
