Out in the Garage

“You know, the Stokes should probably go either on the platform over the engine or the roof until it’s needed. On the hood, it just gets in the way.” Heidi said as she looked at it on the Hyena.

“Or,” Angelique shifted it ninety degrees and laid the two part basket, still stowed nested in each other, lengthwise down the hood, the rounded end forward.

Allyson, Heidi and Angelique looked at it there for a few moments, then Allyson started looking how they could secure it there. It didn’t take long.

“I like it. It’s out of the way, doesn’t add more weight behind us or worse, above us, and leaves the other platform open for an emergency passenger or other cargo in a hurry.” was Allyson’s proclamation.

“Fuel, water, fluids, and your bag, what else for the Hyena?” Heidi asked, looking around for a clue what to do.

“That should do it until Bekka finalizes the crews going.” Allyson answered.

“Well, we could get a jump and double check the loadout of the Subaru?” Angelique mentioned.

Soon they were repeating the process. Fuel, oil, water, air in the tires including the spares, check the tie-downs and the roof mounted pods. Through it all, they wondered who was going to go.

At the Table

“OK, we have the where and the how, so who is the next big question. You already picked the drivers and picked Sabine for the medic, so who else is going?” Paige asked. She could see Bekka and Doug were thinking hard and maybe needed a nudge.

“I cant take everyone. The stuff at Odina’s still needs to happen.” Bekka mused out loud in frustration. This prompted Doug’s reply.

“Well, screw it. It’s fantasy football time. Lay out who you would really want, then we see what they bring and where they are needed. Shoot, we can look at it as two separate missions, since it really is. One at Odina’s and one to bring in the next crew. So, what do we really need for the crew picking up the new guys?”

“Medical, which is taken care of by bringing Sabine, a covering force while Sabine is checking the patients, and enough bodies to keep us safe.” Bekka stated flatly.

“Well, you picked two vehicles, so two drivers and two co-pilots, plus Sabine.”

“What if they have the sick ones in two separate vehicles? Do we take something big enough to consolidate them to one so Sabine can work on them both?” Andrea asked from over next to the radio. This started more frowning and deep thoughts around the table.

“So, two medics.” Bekka said flatly.

“You already have two; Sabine and Allyson.” Doug said to remind Bekka.

“If I pull Allyson out of the seat to do medic work, then that leaves a vehicle without a driver, or a co-pilot if the co-pilot moves to driver.” was Bekka’s answer.

“And if you have Sabine and Allyson in the inbound vehicles doing doc work, then that leaves two vehicles without co-pilots.” Paige pointed out.

“That means we need six people for the trip. So, who are the other three?” Bekka asked the room. She was met by confused and thinking stares. “And while you are thinking on this, don’t forget we still need a heavy focus on mechanical repair and sorting down at Odina’s along with some heavy lifting and moving.”

Soon, several pencils were making lists on notepads, writing names then crossing them off and starting again.

Finally, Bekka thought she had it.

“OK, two drivers who stay drivers, two co-pilots and two medics. Let’s start with the medics. We already have two. Who do we have left?”

“Me, Angelique, Garen, Heidi is halfway trained, as is Emilia” Doug named them off.

“You and Garen are needed at Odina’s for your mechanical aptitude and trouble shooting more than Angelique, who will be more use in the woods if something goes wrong.” Bekka walked them through her thinking so they got to the same place she did.

“OK, Angelique is the second medic with Sabine.” Paige said as she put it on the planning board Bekka had them set up.

If they add medics to the V's convoy then they might displace riders. So swap medics for new co-pilots from V's.
The story is expecting value to have medics AND copilots/direction finders. If one gets dedicated to a task another task is undone. The story covers additional hang ons and extra seating if they lose some seats/a vehicle in an accident. There is always heading for the woods and building a perimeter or sitting tight.

“That leaves the two co-pilots. You have already eliminated a bunch of us when you eliminated us as the medics. What are you looking for in the co-pilots?” Doug asked.

Bekka wasn’t exactly sure. She would feel better if she didn’t have to worry about two, no three locations. Damnit! What did she really need for help on the trip?

“Well, extra eyes, navigation, extra hands for problems and, worst case, more guns to bring to the fight.” Bekka brainstormed out loud.

The group around the table digested Bekka’s description as she continued.

“We have Jesse with Garen and Odina’s group to work hard comm issues. We have Andrea here to do all the co-ordination between the two groups out and about. Besides, we already have one medically limited person on Odina’s group, and my group. Sabine not only is the best medical choice, we need to take someone who can recognize and be recognized by the inbound group. We have the main crew doing the lift, tote, load and drive down at Odina’s but we need each person on this trip to be the right one for more than one reason.”

“So, I guess the question is ‘who can we spare from there that can do the job we need as co-pilot’?” Paige asked as she looked down the list of names on the board.

“Well, if combat capacity is one of the issues and you have eliminated a bunch, then…If Allyson is the overwatch and response driver, put Heidi with her. Those two in the Hyena can bring the hurt in a hurry either stationary or on the move.” Doug said after a few minutes of everyone thinking.

Bekka liked this idea, especially since she had the solution for the other seat in the Subaru with her.

“OK, Allyson and the pissed off honey badger with the belt fed in the Hyena. And the other seat,” Bekka paused, expecting push back when she pitched it. “we put Emilia.”

“Are you sure?” blurted Paige and Andrea, while Doug just nodded slowly.

“Well, you wanted combat power and focus on overwatch. That’s one way to get it. So, she would be your co-pilot?” Doug asked.

“Yup. She has been bugging Heidi for more training and opportunities and this would get her out but with a big safety net.” Bekka tried to put the best face on it.

“I know all that but…” Doug stalled, not sure what the real problem was. Bekka’s reasoning made sense but there was more to it in the back of his head.

“She was just helping Odina get started with the boxing and such in the house. She can’t be expected to be one of the primary drivers on either trip, and she will be with me so I can help keep an eye on her. Besides, Heidi will be there as well.” Before Bekka could stop herself, she added the phrase. “Besides, what could go wrong?” Damnit! Now she was possessed by Garen!

“OK, but you get to tell Heidi.” Doug reiterated.

“Tell Heidi what?” came Heidi’s vice from the doorway.

Plans Revealed

“We have the Crews figured out.” Bekka proclaimed as Heidi, Allyson and Angelique walked into the dining room.

“And the ‘you get to tell Heidi’ part?” Heidi’s eyes swept the room and each of the faces until she saw the planning board and her eyes stopped, and scanned.

The room was silent as the three newcomers looked at the plan. The first to speak was Heidi.

“I’m sure there are a dozen reasons for why, but somebody care to lay it out why Emilia is going with us instead of staying down at Odina’s?”

Most eyes turned towards Bekka.

“She wants to learn and do more, she will be with a good strong group incase things get squirrelly, and taking her frees up someone else for the crew down with Garen and Odina where they need a lot of drivers.” Bekka laid it out short and succinct.

Heidi’s face was unreadable as she listened. Several in the room braced for an explosion. It never came.

“That’s the who, so what are we doing to set up and when do we launch.” Was Heidi’s reply. No fight, no counterproposals. This surprised many, especially Doug.

Bekka took the opportunity to lay things out.

“Everyone gets what they can prepped tonight, then some sleep. Early tomorrow morning we go back down to Odina’s, brief them in on what’s going down and right away we drive back with the stuff they should already have prepped to come back. Then we can finish preps here, crash for a few hours and shove off late tomorrow night. I want to get into place long before the others arrive so we will be looking to hole up in some hide sites in overwatch when we get there. We still have tomorrow to finalize gear loadouts so take your time in a hurry. You need rest most of all.” Bekka walked out before anyone could bring up questions.

Allyson started studying the map and making notes. She wasn’t surprised Bekka tapped her for driving duty. By now it was a familiar responsibility. She also knew her and Heidi were the safety net for the other four. Between her long gun and Heidi’s belt-fed, they could bring a serious amount of force to anything causing trouble for the group. She was curious about the tension in the room though with the Heidi and Emilia situation. She wasn’t sure what the issue was. Doug didn’t seem to be all spooled up over his daughter going and Heidi had to know how much Emilia wanted to learn and do more. Shoot, Heidi was going to be there and could keep an eye on her even.

She made a set of flip cards for the route she would be driving. Heidi was going to be doing the primary navigating in the Hyena but Allyson knew they needed a back-up. All of this was just in case as well. According to the chart, they would be the number two vehicle, following Bekka in the Subaru anyway.

Bekka had said hide sites and she and Heidi were the overwatch so Allyson made a mental note to grab some camouflage netting or one of the spray painted rolls of cloth to break up their outline where they waited. Allyson had a lot to do tonight and tomorrow.

Angelique made a beeline to Sabine.

“OK, boss. What do I need to help with or get ready?”

Sabine looked at Angelique’s young eager face and got a glimpse of her own she used to see in the mirror all those years ago. That was back before…well, before everything. She had to remind herself this young woman had already suffered and learned and done a great deal in her seventeen or eighteen years.

“This is primarily a medical response. Big thing will be the assessment, including extensive serial vitals. Malnutrition, starvation, and abuse takes a lot out f them so we could have all kinds of electrolyte imbalances, hypo or hyper glycemia, dehydration, sepsis or multiple infections or parasitic loads. When we get to them, our first course of action will be to get a baseline on the vitals. Pulse, Blood Pressure, Respirations, End-Tidal CO2, D-Stick, twelve lead EKG so we can keep an eye on rhythms, IV Access, the works. If they are unconscious, we might be talking NG, Foley, ET tube, and who knows what else. Unless something points me another direction, I’ll probably have you start with the adult and I’ll start with the kid. Make sure we have plenty of IV fluids ready. That should give you a starting point. I’ve already laid out a hanging med bag on the table downstairs. It has stuff already in it so we just need to flesh it out. After we get the primary set ready, we need you to make a smaller set, in case we need to split up into two different vehicles.”

“OK, I’ll head right down and get started.” Angelique said as she moved to the stairs.

Sabine just stood there and watched her go. She wished she still had all the energy and enthusiasm this girl had, but she traded it away, bit by bit, for experience, wisdom and knowledge. Many days she wondered if the trade was worth it. Her train of thought was broken by Doug and Heidi walking by, very serious faces on both of them.

Heidi and Doug in Bekka and Garen’s Room

Heidi made a point to be looking over the route and making notes while everyone moved around and did whatever. As soon as she saw Bekka walk out from the bedroom headed for the hot tub, she made a beeline for the bedroom, Doug close behind. As soon as they were in the room, he shut the door.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, thinking he already had the answer.

“Nothing.” She said as she rummaged through the luggage they had brought, pulling out stuff for the mission tomorrow.

“There’s obviously something. Is there a problem with the plan we came up with? Did we miss something?”

Heidi just looked up at him, then back to what she was doing.

“Tell me. Did we miss something?”

“No, the plan looks like a good one for what needs done with what we have.” Heidi didn’t even look up.

Doug was tired, frustrated and confused. All of this was a big scramble and he didn’t know what the problem was at this point with Heidi now. Well, he couldn’t fix it if he didn’t know what it was.

“Then what the **** is the problem?” he asked in frustration.

Heidi turned towards him, her beautiful blue and green eyes red and wet with tears. Instinctively he stepped forward to pull her into an embrace.

“What’s wrong? It will be ok, how can I help?” Doug could feel Heidi trembling in his arms.

“Come on now, it’s not a bad plan, it’s not a bad trip.” He tried again.

“Yesitis” came the muffled reply from Heidi against his chest.

He pulled her back a little so he could see her. “How so?” he asked softly.

“Cause I’m on it!” she blurted and put her head against his chest again.

“How so? That doesn’t make sense.” he asked again.

“It’s me! I’m the Angel of ****ing Death on missions, I’m a shit magnet and a lot of people usually die when I’m on missions and now I have my own daughter on the mission with me and I can’t even feel bad and selfish about that because yours in on the mission too!”

“You’re not the kiss of death.” Doug countered forcefully.

“Oh yeah, tell that to Noah, Lucas and Kevin and all the other names on my calf!”

Before Doug could stop himself, he glanced down to Heidi’s legs, knowing the three fresh names Emilia added to her mother’s list on her calf.

“We didn’t lose anyone taking out the guys at the camp headquarters.” He tried to find flaws.

“Is that a gamble you would be happy with betting Angelique’s life?” Heidi’s tone was sharp and acidic now.

“There is no one here I would trust more with the safety of my daughter. I trust you more than myself, or any of the others here.” They just held one another for a long time.

Pre-Dawn at the House

Bekka was up early and out checking on the Subaru in the garage when she heard someone else out there with her. She was trying to be quiet so she didn’t wake up Angelique or Allyson up. So was whoever was joining her. She looked over. It was Heidi. She had the MG-3 and a couple cans of ammo in her hands and a pack on her back.

“I know why I’m up early. I hope I didn’t wake you up.” Bekka said softly.

Heidi wasn’t startled. She went over and put the cans in the floorboard of the Hyena.

“You didn’t. Been up for a while.”

Bekka heard a different tone to Heidi’s voice. She was used to the positive forceful Heidi, not this one.

“Are you OK?”

Heidi looked up at Bekka. “Honestly? No.”

“Do I want to know? Can I help?”

“Not really. Your plan is good, it all makes sense.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

Heidi set the MG-3 on the hood of the Hyena. She took a few deep breaths before she answered Bekka.

“The problem is, I’m a shit magnet. I usually leave a trail of bodies in my wake. Now, I have my own daughter on the mission with me. I also have Doug’s daughter on the mission. Angelique is awesome, top notch and ridiculously capable, especially for her age and experience. Emilia isn’t too far behind in her own right, but I’m scared as hell the shit that normally shows up around me might get them hurt or killed.”

Bekka wasn’t sure what to do or say to help this. She hadn’t had enough coffee for her brain to work in team leader/Senior NCO mode quickly but she had to say something.

“Heidi, if we all stay focused on our slices and take care of our small parts, then it will all work out. Emilia will be in the seat next to me. I will make sure she will make it through this. You keep me from being pounced and I will keep her on the right track. My mission is to get the medics to the inbound group and lead them back. End of story. Your mission is to keep the alligators from sneaking up and ambushing us while we do our mission. Trust me. We will be OK. I have been on a lot of missions and only lost people on days ending in ‘Y’.” She smiled, hoping she both reassured and defused the situation some.

“Oh, you’re funny,” Heidi said, shaking her head “but I get the message. You can’t fault me for worrying though.”

“Sure, you are allowed to worry, just don’t let it stop you from doing what needs be done.” Bekka’s SNCO voice was back. She also knew Heidi would understand it.

Heidi must have gotten the message. Her next question was all business.

“I need some bungee cords and tie down straps to secure this beast and its food.” She waved at the MG-3.

Thanks! When we’re around someone who oozes competence and skill, we rarely consider how worried and conflicted they are inside.
The bitch of it, its not a lack of skill or capability on her part that has her wrapped six times around the axle. She knows she is good and can do her part but she had made it through so many times where a shitload of people didn't. she's worried about others being in her doom cloud

Survival, or dying. Not a scratch, messed up for life can be, and often is blind luck. Sometimes no amount of being alert, careful, planned can save you.

In the House

Everyone was somewhat well rested, all things considered. Andrea was in the kitchen cooking up a storm of something with Sabine while everyone else ate. The plan was to go down to Odina’s, finish loading what they could right away and come back to finish mission familiarization and preparations.

Sabine was going to do a lot of her prep work after the group headed out and the house calmed down. Right now, she was helping Andrea throw together food for Bekka and crew to take down to the guys at Odina’s.

It didn’t take long before everyone was piled into what Doug was starting to call his ‘school bus’ since his Suburban had all the seats to carry everybody to town.

Odina’s

Everyone was up and just starting to move around when Jesse got a call on the radio. The message wasn’t long but set off a flurry of activity when he passed it on to Garen.

“Andrea said the guys are headed this way and bringing breakfast. She also said Bekka wanted you to know it would be a ‘hot pit refuel’ since there was a second mission.”

“Second mission? What second mission? This IS the only mission I know of. What new shit just happened?” Garen was all confused now. Well, he won’t have any answers until they get there, Damnit!

Garen looked around and waved everyone over.

“Guys, I don’t know why but we need to get the next couple things loaded and ready to go out as soon as the other guys get here.” Before anyone could ask questions, he waved them down and kept talking. “They are bringing breakfast but we are doing a quick turn for them so they can take care of something else, and NO I don’t know what that other thing is. Now you know as much as I do.”

“So, what do you want us to get ready first?” Zed asked.

“Let’s get those big ass tools into the last heavy duty trailer and the crap into the vehicles we are taking to The Center. We can put the trailer behind the Suburban and they can pick up all the drivers there and head off to whatever other ****ing fire cropped up. Good enough plan?”

Garen looked around. Nobody spoke up right away.

“Great! Let’s get a move on!”

In the Workshop at Odina’s

Garen’s first self-assigned task was to get the big tools onto the last heavy-duty trailer. Without a fork lift, he and Jesse were resorting to an oversized engine hoist to help load a metal break, tube bender and several other big objects.

Kara was slinging as much of the stuff set aside into the vehicles they were stashing as she could. Sleeping bags, small tents, medical supplies, a couple of stretchers, cans of food, anything and everything they could think of for a good fall-back stash. Zed was doing last minute checks on them to make sure they would start and run for the drive over.

Odina and Emilia were playing runner, scavenging and running pile to pile for the two groups loading things. They were also adding things like a stash of clothes in various sizes to the stuff going to The Center.

They didn’t know how long they had until Bekka and crew got there, and they didn’t know what was happening after. They just all knew there was a frantic vibe in the place. Everybody was scrambling.

Later

All the hustle and bustle was disrupted by the arrival of the Suburban. Doug pulled it into the bay and everyone got out. Bekka waved everyone around to the back where Angelique was pulling out a cooler and some paper plates and bottles of mustard, and jars of salsa.

“OK, everyone. Breakfast on us.” Bekka flipped open the lid of the cooler and steam billowed out.

“What’s in the box?” Was Garen’s question.

“Polish tacos or Mexican corn dogs.” At the confused looks, Bekka explained as she put hers together.

“Venison and pork Kielbasa and tortillas and cheese.” She skewered a pair of sausage, put them in flour tortillas and hit it with a squirt of mustard. “There are both flour and corn in the box. Everybody get some food, then we talk.”
