In the Barn
Petra and Jennifer were tired from all the worry and stress. After a big bowl of Mac and Cheese, Petra had Jennifer playing video games in the trailer while she went back to trying to unravel the rat’s nest of wires on the radio desk. She tried to work but listening for updates made it harder and harder so to call it work was a bit of stretch.
Peta was staring at the wires when she was startled by a loud noise coming from the radio.
“Mini Mech, Mini Mech are you there, incoming SITREP from Poppa ”
“Mini Mech”
“R-2 reroute to city R-2 will call with more info.”
“Message received.”
Petra put the mic down. With no more news, her imagination was left to wonder. She went back to work on the wires but her thoughts kept spiraling down the rabbit hole as she waited for Silas and Ivar to call with more information. Even when they did, it didn’t help. All it did was tighten the knots in her stomach.
She finally gave in to the problem working in the back of her head. She grabbed one of the small notebooks she had on the desk and started writing trying to make sense of things as she pondered the ‘what ifs’ racing around her brain.
What if Sofia doesn’t make it? Well, all the same vehicles would be able to go, no change.
What if Sofia, Amber, and Jonas are gone? This was the rough one. This would leave just Silas, Ivar, Herself and Jennifer. Damn. Well, Silas’ camper, Ivar’s camper and her truck and trailer at least could still go, leaving the question of what trailers behind Silas and Ivar’s trucks. One of the two had to take a cargo trailer to bring enough fuel but would the other bring another cargo trailer or the one they picked up for Jennifer and Jonas? If not, she figured Jennifer would be in her trailer since it had two separate beds if need be.
What if whatever happened to Amber, Jonas and Sofia happened to Silas and Ivar too? That would leave just her and Jennifer heading north. Petra’s eyes were wet with tears as she even contemplated such a thing. She tried to figure out what all she could bring for the two of them, and what all would have to be left behind.
She tried to remember all the pieces and parts of things she had laying around, leftovers from Paige’s scrounging. Could she make a lumber rack for her truck to make more storage room? Tow hitch on the back of her trailer and drag two trailers with her truck? It was strong enough, but she had never driven a double trailer before.
God! She was making herself nuts thinking down this road! She still remembered Jonas as he left; ‘Take care of Jennifer’. She said she would and meant it, no matter how much it hurt.
“Unser Fadder im Himmel,
dei Naame loss heilich sei.
Dei Reich loss kumme.
Dei Wille loss geduh sei,
uff die Erd wie im Himmel.
Unser deeglich Brot gebb uns heit,
Un vergebb unser Schulde…”
