Thank you. Sure hope we squeaked by that one. I think the road trip will be most interesting with the current crew along with any people that look like quality help they might pick up along the way.

Table for one:
Jonas saw the guard following what he was telling him, falling in line with what her was telling him

On the Road to the City

Silas was driving again. They were headed to the only other location that made sense to either one of them. Both were hyperalert, scanning everything they could, praying they didn’t find them as they drove. It had been over four hours ago Sofia was shot and they were still an hour out from the hospital.

Silas was worried for his friends. He worried for Sofia, both physically and mentally. He worried for Ivar and the effect this would have on him even if Sofia survived and especially if she dies. He worried about Amber. If she is able to keep Sofia alive long enough to get to the hospital, it will be a help to offset her worry about being able to do field trauma work.

If Sofia doesn’t make it, he knew Amber would forever second guess herself and her abilities. As would Ivar. If Sofia dies, it could tear their little group apart completely.

If Sofia dies, Ivar will also blame himself, like Mickelson did. And if he blames Amber, he wouldn’t listen to her enough for her to help him get through it.

Silas’ thoughts were broken by Ivar.

“Why didn’t they let us know they were going to the city?”

“How? Cell phone? Carrier Pidgeon? You haven’t gotten to putting a radio in the R32 since it was only this last week we decided it is probably coming with us, and on a trailer at that, so, how in the hell were they supposed to tell us.” Silas snapped back at Ivar.

“I don’t know! What the **** am I supposed to do? Damn it!”

“I know and I’m sorry. If she can be saved, Amber will make it happen. The bleeding was controlled when they left. You sat through the med classes downrange as much as I did. Six hours still ok for the limb and they are probably already out of the OR and waiting for you to show up with flowers.”

Silas hated himself for giving what might be false hope. He knew there was a hell of a lot of blood in the snow when they walked back to the barn. The words flashing in his head from the classes was irreversible shock. Without enough blood, the organs would start to die. Worse, he just threw Amber under the bus by saying she could save her.

“I know, but until I see her in the bed, awake and stable…” Ivar’s voice trailed off.

“Let’s not borrow trouble. We have enough showing up all on it’s own.” Silas said as he tried to focus on his driving.

At the OR

Jonas stood outside the door to the OR. He and Deloris had come to an understanding. He wasn’t going to interfere or go in, but he wasn’t leaving either. His job at this point was the safety of Sofia and Amber and he didn’t care how many he sent to the morgue to accomplish his job.

He was worried. He didn’t necessarily expect more bad guys to come storming in anymore. It had been too long and there were so many other opportunities when they could have attacked. Now what worried him was the frequent trips by the nurses to fetch more supplies, fluids, drugs and who knew what else.

The view he saw the few times he glanced in was full of contradictions. A hospital strips the dignity and modesty from everyone, and an OR even more so. Seeing his friend mostly naked on the table, pale as a ghost under the blazing lights of the OR, gave him so many mixed emotions he stopped glancing in. The good figure he suspected lay under her clothes was confirmed, causing him to blush slightly with embarrassment at the revelation. The piles of bloody clothes and bandages on the floor along with the copious smears of blood on all the scrubs of the docs and nurses lit off his fear receptors. His brain was too good with its imagination. The next time he glanced in, it wasn’t Sofia on the table. It was Margaret. That was when he stopped looking in.

He didn’t know how long he had been standing there, it had to be hours, when Deloris came down the hall with a cup of coffee for him. She also handed him one of the small OR hand towels.

“Here, wipe your face. You’re scaring my nurses.” She said as she held the cloth out.

Jonas was confused but he did what she said. He looked at the small towel after he wiped and scrubbed his face. It was wet. And there were streaks of blood on the towel as well.

“If anybody can save her, Dr T will. You just to have a little faith.”

Jonas looked over at Deloris. “It’s hard when I know my wife died right over there on that table and now the person who helped me and my daughter survive the event is in there on the same table.”

“I know, but you have to try.”

“Oh, I would expect her husband to show up sometime soon. Please let me know when he arrives.”

“Sure thing, Jonas. When he does, you need take a break.” Deloris had her stern face back on.

“I’ll take a break when they do.” jerking a thumb over his shoulder in the direction of the OR. “But thanks for the coffee.” He took a sip and made a face, adding “I think.”

In the Barn

Petra and Jennifer were tired from all the worry and stress. After a big bowl of Mac and Cheese, Petra had Jennifer playing video games in the trailer while she went back to trying to unravel the rat’s nest of wires on the radio desk. She tried to work but listening for updates made it harder and harder so to call it work was a bit of stretch.

Peta was staring at the wires when she was startled by a loud noise coming from the radio.

“Mini Mech, Mini Mech are you there, incoming SITREP from Poppa ”

“Mini Mech”

“R-2 reroute to city R-2 will call with more info.”

“Message received.”

Petra put the mic down. With no more news, her imagination was left to wonder. She went back to work on the wires but her thoughts kept spiraling down the rabbit hole as she waited for Silas and Ivar to call with more information. Even when they did, it didn’t help. All it did was tighten the knots in her stomach.

She finally gave in to the problem working in the back of her head. She grabbed one of the small notebooks she had on the desk and started writing trying to make sense of things as she pondered the ‘what ifs’ racing around her brain.

What if Sofia doesn’t make it? Well, all the same vehicles would be able to go, no change.

What if Sofia, Amber, and Jonas are gone? This was the rough one. This would leave just Silas, Ivar, Herself and Jennifer. Damn. Well, Silas’ camper, Ivar’s camper and her truck and trailer at least could still go, leaving the question of what trailers behind Silas and Ivar’s trucks. One of the two had to take a cargo trailer to bring enough fuel but would the other bring another cargo trailer or the one they picked up for Jennifer and Jonas? If not, she figured Jennifer would be in her trailer since it had two separate beds if need be.

What if whatever happened to Amber, Jonas and Sofia happened to Silas and Ivar too? That would leave just her and Jennifer heading north. Petra’s eyes were wet with tears as she even contemplated such a thing. She tried to figure out what all she could bring for the two of them, and what all would have to be left behind.

She tried to remember all the pieces and parts of things she had laying around, leftovers from Paige’s scrounging. Could she make a lumber rack for her truck to make more storage room? Tow hitch on the back of her trailer and drag two trailers with her truck? It was strong enough, but she had never driven a double trailer before.

God! She was making herself nuts thinking down this road! She still remembered Jonas as he left; ‘Take care of Jennifer’. She said she would and meant it, no matter how much it hurt.

“Unser Fadder im Himmel,

dei Naame loss heilich sei.

Dei Reich loss kumme.

Dei Wille loss geduh sei,

uff die Erd wie im Himmel.

Unser deeglich Brot gebb uns heit,

Un vergebb unser Schulde…”

Well, that's a little rope, but not much to hang by on a cliff like this. Hope that nothing unexpected happens at the hospital and it goes well. Everyone we have there is a critical resource for the coming drive.

Thank you.

Later, Outside the OR

Jonas was standing by the door, wishing he didn’t take the fourth cup of coffee Deloris brought him when he heard the sounds from inside the OR increase. He couldn’t tell what the difference was, but it was different.

Soon, both doors to the OR opened and a gurney was wheeled out. Before He could ask one of the nurses about it, Amber was there. Her scrubs were bloody and sodden, drenched in sweat. Her face and mannerisms looked like she just came from a five-day drunk followed by a fifty-mile road march with pack.

“Well?” He was afraid to ask but he had to.

“Too long…” Amber started to say then her speech faltered.

“Too long? Too long what?” Jonas was scared and instantly felt a huge lump of lead in his stomach not from the battery acid in a cup.

“Too long since I’ve done anything like this…” she looked at her watch. “Five hours…Five hours of surgery after we got her under…” She stared to look back up at Jonas and lost her balance. He had to catch her.

“You need to rest!” He looked down the hall “Deloris!”

He saw her head pop around the corner.

“I need a place to put her. She is worn out and was already down a unit of blood when we walked in.”

“Bring her down here to the resident ready room. Then you can come deal with these two in the lobby. I think they are with you.”

Jonas carried her down the hall despite her protests. In the ready room, he found a couch to lay her on.

“I’ll be fine, Jonas. You don’t have to do this.”

“Bullshit! I’m not telling Silas I let you sprawl to the floor in the hospital. Besides, I think him and Ivar are here now.” His pause sucked the energy out of the room before his next question. “What am I telling Ivar? How did it go?”

“Unless she throws a clot or something, she will live. We got internal fixation rods and plates in to put the bone back together. No weight bearing for at least two to three months and slow going after that to build it back up, but if she does everything right, she should get almost full use back.”

Jonas could recognize the burst of energy Amber used to explain all of that. It was a reflex, but now all that energy was gone. Amber was seriously wiped. He grabbed a blanket and covered her up.

“You rest. I will talk to the guys and bring Silas back here to you so he won’t take my head off.’ He saw before he finished talking, she was already asleep.

“Bring her down here to the resident ready room. Then you can go deal with these two “gentlemen” in the lobby before they start tearing the place apart. I seem to remember them being with you. If you can’t calm them down I will have to get a couple hypodermic needles full of Haldol ready. I been on shift too long to deal with their shit.”

He kissed Delores on the cheek not only for tonight but for all the other nights he knew she or her other nurses took care of him.

She blushed a little “Go be with your family.”

“I am but like you said I need to go calm those two down.”

Despite Amber’s protests, Jonas continued to carry her down the hall to the couch in the ready room. He made sure she was comfortable getting her some water and covering her with a blanket. He was ransacking the room for food he knew had to be there when he heard an exhausted voice.

“I’ll be fine, Jonas. You don’t have to do this.”

He saw before he finished talking, she was already asleep. She was covered in blood, sweat, and tears. As he looked at her there he did not know which were hers, his or Petra’s at this point did it matter? If not now they would all eventually flow together. A tear ran down his cheek, he would cry later. He still had to go tell Ivar and Silas about their wives. Then he would find a way to call his girls to say good night.

In the Waiting Room

The nurse at the desk wondered when it was going to happen. She knew things were going to start going sideways soon. It was just a matter of time. It was a full moon and the new orderly said it; those dreaded words ‘looks like we are in for slow night. Then it happened! The man covered in blood came in yelling ‘I got a multiple GSW blood loss get me gurney followed by the same man and a woman carrying the limp body’. Then the computers going down. Now a screaming idiot trying to intimidate her trying to find a patient. Then is all the staff needed with the recent incidences happening in the city, in the hospital and to the staff.

“Can you at least tell me if she is here!?” The tall man at the desk asked the nurse behind the counter again.

“Sir, calm down. I am doing the best I can. The computer system is down right now. As soon as the other nurse is back, I’m sure she will be able to tell you. I just came on shift and don’t know who’s already been moved out of the ER upstairs.” She told him again.

She noticed the gun he was wearing on his belt and was reaching down to push the security call button when the shorter of the two men put his hand on the taller one’s shoulder.

“Damn it Ivar, don’t rough up the nurses! You know they have to be here! The car is out front. They are here. We just have to wait.”

“I have to know how she is!”

“Look at this way. If the worst had happened, they would have been sitting out here waiting on us.”

Silas glanced over her shoulder then back at the nurse “ I sorry, GSW is his wife and the surgeon is my wife. Please let us know if you or the ‘tech’ you called when you pushed the button need our help to contain any problems. It is our specialty.” He said calmly.

Once he finished explaining, he helped Ivar over to the seats in the waiting room, unaware they were in exactly the same seats Henrik and Andrea were sitting in months ago waiting to hear about Paige’s fate. They tried to make themselves comfortable but neither the seats or their brains would let them.

Later, in the Waiting Room

Ivar and Silas were sitting there long enough where they were finally drifted into a state of consciousness where their body was half-awake, half- the adrenaline and all the hyper-alertness was gone. The stress of combat and the not knowing left them spent. They had a couple granola bars and some water as they drove towards the hospital, but that energy boost was gone now as well. Their bodies and minds were spent needing rest and energy. Their condition would explain why they did not have their usual alertness and Jonas was able to startle them from halfway across the room.

Silas was the first to see the blurry figure, wiping his eyes, and reaching for a weapon that was not in its normal place on his hip, but in his waistband instead, lucky for Jonas.

Ivar started to stand up but Jonas waved him down as he flopped into the seat across from them, the carbine across his lap.

“Well?” Ivar asked impatiently.

“They just rolled Sofia out of surgery into post-op. They will let us know which room she is headed towards. Broken femur, lost lots of blood, but should recover. Long recovery time. At least three months no weight bearing, but she should get full mobility back since the joint wasn’t damaged.”

“Where’s Amber?” Silas interjected.

“She’s crashed in one of the ready rooms in the back. She’s wiped out. She over five hours in surgery with Sofia putting the rods into her leg, piecing her back together. Delores says if you can behave yourself, I can take you to where she is sleeping on the couch in the back.”

Jonas looked at the two friends. “My turn for questions. Did you guys get them all or find out how many there are? What about Jennifer and Petra?”

“Looks like only one that we know of, but we need to keep our guard up in case more start creeping around.” Silas said, since Ivar was still a little speechless from the good news about Sofia.

“Jennifer and Petra?”

“They are staying tucked up in the barn with the trailers till one of us gets back there.”

“I don’t like the idea of them being there alone.”

Ivar joined the conversation again. “I agree. Why don’t you go see Amber for a few minutes,” he said to Silas, “and then you and Jonas here take one of the cars back to the house. I’ll stay here and keep an eye on Amber while I wait to see Sofia. You know Amber won’t leave until after she can check on her too. You guys go back and get some sleep and keep the house safe tonight, come back in the morning for an update.”

Silas was already nodding as Ivar talked.

“Sounds like a good idea. We will call ahead with the radio, then take the R32 to the house. That way you will have something with a radio here, and we will be back in the morning so we can plan from there.”
