In the Bus
The bus was a beast for Silas to drive. It was big, bulky and overloaded. He was horsing the thing through the curves at what felt like a snail’s pace but any faster and he felt unstable. Most people don’t get a lot of experience driving something with the turning wheels behind them. It really throws off the feel.
After a short while of this, he was regretting the government’s choice to not have radios in them. He could use some music or some other distraction. When he told Petra this, she whipped out her phone and a charger. The little speakers in the phone were a little hard to hear over the sound of the bus’s engine but they made do.
Silas was impressed with the wide variety she had in her playlists. Most of the stuff from the 80’s and 90’s and a few from the 2000’s he recognized. Soon it digressed into a sing along in the bus. He was right. It was a good distraction and kept him a little better focused on the road. All was good until the phone kicked over into another playlist.
This new playlist was full of dark-themed symphonic rock with angry or sad women in it. There were still a few he recognized for a soundtrack here and there. These Petra seemed to connect much deeper with, belting out the songs with full abandonment. Silas was impressed. The girl had some pipes on her and a sound much bigger than you would expect from her tiny frame. One song seemed to repeat several times in the list. It had a more upbeat flavor but was all about letting go and moving on and shattered dreams.
Silas glanced over at the phone, trying to see the name of the song. All he saw was the Disney logo at his quick glance. Well, that explains it. Bright catchy sounding toon for some dark as hell story, because if you broke most their movies down and identified the elements, they could just as easily be things written by Edger Allen Poe. They were full of dead parents, abandoned kids and evil villains when you really looked closely. On the plus side, the tunes were usually good.
