Finally, a sorta resolution! Still waiting for more because I remember them asking for a pick up of two... not three or five! At least the cliff isn't as steep now.

Oh, and a little one... "once it was pointed oit to you "

Thank you.

The long gun has a choice. Kill your friend or cull the herd of a couple moving too fast for their own good. The first shot could be the first of thousands.
Depending on a couple of variables, I'd start with culling but the first focus would be on preventing my guy from torture or indignities.

Not that mean today (thought about it though)
Most kind of you and your generous gesture is noted
For a moment, it was unclear what happened next. The man with the pistol suddenly crumpled to the side, gasping and clawing at the dirt. At the same time, the one in the lead, the one with the knife, stumbled and pitched forward, a massive wet spray coming from his rapidly deflating head. It sounded like a watermelon full of pudding, dropped off a freeway overpass. He slid to a stop five feet from Zed’s boots.

With Missy’s hand in his, they walked off into the trees.
Well that was a good series; reinforced some things, added a few new possible side tracks to the whole map and still, not surprisingly, offers no new insight into the two-person extraction as there are now five (OK 4 & 1/2) in the group.

"Good news is I brought stadium seats and a hibachi."

Thawed a pack of those leg quarters. One third soaking in buttermilk, one third in Italian dressing with extra lemon pepper, and the rest in homemade BBQ sauce. Got two dozen eggs boiling, y'all want potato salad, pasta salad, deviled eggs, or some combo?

if you mash up the German potato salad and replace the centers of the deviled eggs, then top with chopped bacon

OK

Coming from the West, I'm going to put $$$ on the fact your Nanaimo bars are true to the original BC recipe: I'm in!!

I eat very little in the way of sweets but Nanaimo bars are my one & only desert addiction; damn good thing for me no Southerners I've met can make them right or I'd be 280 lbs in a month.

Enough of this food talk, I'm gaining weight just reading it. Back to the story.

I'm sometimes a lazy reader, and when they called for pickup of two, I was thinking 2 of the 3, then 2 of the 5 with Missy and her kid. But we know CCGuy is not a lazy writer, and often throws unanticipated twists at us. So, I'm now wondering if the pickup is for some unknown couple in this new group, perhaps a pair that needs medical help or orphans. Something to wonder about while waiting to learn the real story.

Best idea I've heard to day Sir!

Zed was breathing faster and easier now. They were walking randomly into the trees. He didn’t have to worry about direction right now. He knew where he needed to end up, but he wasn’t headed there with her.

“I meant what I said earlier. If you want to leave with us, the offer is open. If you don’t and change your mind later, I will still honor the offer.”

She looked over at Zed.

“I don’t know. This is my family. Why would I want to leave?”

“Well, ten minutes ago, they were willing to send you and your son off with strangers as hostages to save their own ass. That would make me think twice on where I would want my son raised.”

Zed stopped walking. He could tell she was thinking.

Missy was confused, upset and unsure of anything. Her whole world went sideways this morning. Why should she believe these strangers? Then again, they could have killed her and everyone else ten times over and were the ones protecting her, offering shelter and refusing to take her hostage.

“I don’t know. It’s a lot to think about.”

“Well, if you change your mind, there’s a little church north of here. St Owen’s. Make it to there and talk to Father Adrian. He can help you or point out somewhere to go, or if you want to join us, tell him you need to contact the Russian. He will get word to me.”

“I’ll keep it in mind.” Missy looked around. They seemed to be walking aimlessly through the forest. “How much farther until we get there? I need my son.”

Zed stopped walking. He turned to her.

“Actually, Missy, here is where we part company for now.”

Missy was stunned. Where was her son? What were they going to do with her son? Were they taking him with them?

“Where is my son?”

Zed had a smile as he looked at her.

“He is safe. We didn’t want him in the crossfire if things went bad. He is sleeping in the shack with the rabbits. They took him there when we went to go see Linda and William. He’s going to sleep a while, and he might not remember any of this morning when he wakes up. It’s one of the side effects of the drug we gave him.”

Missy wanted to explode.

“He’s where? why did you walk me out into the woods again if he’s in the rabbit hutch?”

“Because if we still had to retrieve your son, they would let us walk out without trying something stupid and set off the slaughter. It would also give me an opportunity to make my offer without witnesses.”

Zed could breathe easier once Missy left him. She was still a wild card. He had to be on guard the whole time she was with him. With her heading back to the cabin and her boy, He could move easier. Now he just had to get with Angelique and Kara. He played a hunch.

“Kara”

“Right here, Zed.”

Kara stepped out from between some trees.

“That was a hell of a shot you two took. I thought I was done.”

“We had your back. That was the whole reason I roofied the kid in the first place, to give us two guns to cover you. Besides, with as close as I was, another four or five would have started leaking.”

“That would have been real messy.” Zed cringed at the thought of how many bodies Kara was talking about stacking.

“They would have had to pay dearly even to get to you. If they hurt or killed you, I would have fulfilled my promise. Ash and sorrow would be the only things left in the valley.”

“I’m glad it didn’t come to that.” Zed got chills at Kara’s tone.

“So am I. Let’s get Angelique and get out of here. We need to make eight or ten miles so we can do dinner.”

As satisfying as that was, we’d all like to jump forward a few steps. I keep thinking about the Uber for two. My guess is missy and her son while the three musketeers stay around to insure they’re not followed.
Thank you.

Kara was referring to Angelique as kid in the sentence. She had done this quite frequently, but I should probibly change it

The original made perfect sense to me, don't over think it, your weeds are deep enough as it is!

“Well, this is a fine kettle of fish we are in, Ollie!” Zed said as they ducked some low hanging vines.

They had been running through the woods for a couple hours now. The two five-man patrols were making their lives miserable. Either they hadn’t gotten the word to pull back, or William and Linda had a change of heart and were actively hunting them. Either way, something was going to have to change, and soon.

The big problem was they were trying to not engage. The patrols might be good people following bad intel. They could kill them, but if they killed one patrol, the other one might catch up with them. Or, it may motivate the others to hunt them. So, they were trying to make ground and get away.

The main plan was to keep everyone on the move until it got dark. Then they hoped their night vision gear would let them slip away when the patrols couldn’t see them. They just had to dodge them until dark.

Seems like a pointed object lesson is required but if the odd couple had a change of heart, were lying or have been supplanted, the primary issue remains: this is a group w/ demonstrated capacities for evil and can't be left to roam freely in our crew's rear.

Perhaps its time to consider a punitive strike instead of an extraction?

Always giving the benefit of the doubt, you are. I'd like to see them circle back to the farmhouse and end the intrigue there. Find out directly if the two patrols are left-overs or Linda&William's response.

We'll see. I just hope we don't have to wait until after a long weekend to find out!
Thank you.

The numerical odds are not in immediate favour of that strategy and its not so much 'benefit of the doubt'. I just like to be as certain as possible my actions are correct and justified. If being assured is not possible I always executed on the side of protecting my guys and completing the tasking, I guess I'll find out how badly I screwed the pooch in a while.

My mantra was always WID, KTA & LGSTO.

The long WE is over 2morrow; what else you got to do?

Yep, agreed. But, here we are waiting to find out. And we still don't know how many people are in that group, what their capabilities, are, etc. We do know that they can field at least two 5 person patrols.

Your acronyms elude me tonight (could it be the scotch?) WID, KTA, LGSTO?

Kara, Angelique and Zed were trying to move quick, but also trying to leave as little trail as possible. The harder it was for the patrol to follow their movement, the more time it would take them to stay on their trail. The two groups chasing them had joined now.

Ten people chasing them. Ten people they didn’t necessarily want to kill. They weren’t close enough to get them, but not far enough away they could lose them. Zed was in the lead, setting the pace. He was setting the pace because he was the slowest. He could keep going for a long time, but not fast, or he could go fast but not for very long.

Angelique was right behind him. She could keep up with him easily. All that time spent between rehab with Bekka and Allyson and the long patrols with Kara had her in the best shape of her life. Working out with Heidi and Emilia was making her strong as well.

Angelique knew Zed was trying every trick he could think of on the fly to keep making it hard for their pursuers without hurting them. She tried thinking of something, anything to help. She knew Kara was racking her brain as well. They just had to make it until dark.

Kara was ranging back and forth on their rear and flanks, trying to keep an eye on their pursuers. She knew they weren’t leaving many tracks but these guys following them were pretty good. At least as far as following them, Tactically, they sucked. She had to stop herself several times. It wouldn’t take much for her to start whittling down the chase crew, but that was the exact opposite of what they wanted to do. She was crossing their trail when their radio squawked. It was Angelique.

“We got a problem, get up here.”

ComCamGuy

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Kara knew she was making more noise than she wanted but she knew Angelique wouldn’t call unless it was serious.

Kara got to Angelique and Zed’s position. Zed was on the ground. Angelique had her bag next to her and was working on Zed.

“Alright, what happened, Angelique?”

“I stepped in a gopher hole!” Zed said through gritted teeth.

“What?” Kara said, turning to Zed.

“It was under the leaves, didn’t see it.”

Kara looked down at Angeliques work as she was splinting and wrapping Zed’s lower leg.

“OK, so how bad Angelique.”

“Broke broke. I had to straighten and set it. Walking splint in progress.”

When Kara heard this, she knew their plan just went out the window. ****!

“Alright, Plan ‘D’”

Angelique wasn’t sure what plan D was. She knew plan B was kill the patrol, but she wasn’t sure what plan D was. Before she could ask, Zed did.

“What’s plan D, Kara?”

“Are you afraid of heights, Zed?” Kara said with a half smile.
