The incredible story of how degraded gorse-infested farmland has been regenerated back into beautiful New Zealand native forest over the course of 30 years.. Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest is a 30-minute documentary about Hinewai Nature Reserve, on New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know of his plans to allow the introduced ‘weed’ gorse to grow as a nurse canopy to regenerate farmland into native forest, people were not only skeptical but outright angry – the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”. Now considered a hero locally and across the country, Hugh oversees 1500 hectares resplendent in native forest, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow. He has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool. Host a screening of the film: While we've made this film free to watch on YouTube, if you're holding a public screening you'll need a license. We've made the fees very low to be accessible to all communities and we'll be splitting the income with Hinewai Reserve. Check out http://foolsanddreamers.com to learn more about the film and screening licenses. Thank you for your support!

Since the 1970's Majuli islander Jadav Payeng has been planting trees in order to save his island. To date he has single handedly planted a forest larger than Central Park NYC. His forest has transformed what was once a barren wasteland, into a lush oasis. Humble yet passionate and philosophical about his work. Payeng takes us on a journey into his incredible forest.

Take a look with us how permaculture farming is growing rapidly in India. Manisha Lath Gupta, who was an executive vice president in a private bank, decided to grow a healthy food for herself and her family in 2011. The bought a barren piece of land, devoid of any vegetation and without top soil. It took the couple 7 years, but at the end she and her husband created a food forest called Aanandaa or tranquility, using principles of permaculture. Aanandaa farm is located on the base of Morni hills, about an hour's drive from Chandigarh. What was a barren piece of land seven years ago is now a food forest with more than 4,500 trees. #permaculture #foodforest #Aanandaa

It doesn't take long to prove professional forest management works.

The current education systems ignore these facts. Most think old growth grows forever. When in reality even these true and factual success stories, the old growth is dieing and by now some dead growth and under brush or thrash needs to now be harvested or chipped for soil conditioning. If not, it will eventually get sick and burn or have the potential to be a sick forest.

Minimum management is BS, in the piece he plays it down. It's huge!

Only the Redwoods and Giant Sequoias plus some ancient hard wood stands is the only true old growth that's healthy. And they have all been protected for over 50 years now.

New forest that can grow in 10 to 40 years needs massive management. And if you do it right, every 30+- years one can clear cut small areas out then replant, eventually the whole forest gets clear cutted one small section at a time and replanted, then managed and before you know it you can have a army/industry of over half a million peoples who manage the forest that pays their livings. Like we had in No.Cal in the 60s-2006, but they killed that industry over a frigging owl and BS forest management practices.

Nearly 30 years ago, Trees for Life Founder, Alan Watson-Featherstone stood in the Universal Hall and in front of 300 people made a life-long commitment to restore the ancient Caledonian Forest. He started with no resources, no knowledge, no access to land, no funds, but his passion and inspiration have carried him forward and now Trees for Life not only helps nature to restore the Scottish Highlands - it also helps people reconnect with their spirit, with hope and with the land. Alan's talk also includes a wide range of his photography illustrating both the damage to the land and the difference our work makes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
