An oil tanker operated by an Israeli company reportedly came under attack off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea, the British military said Friday, with the company later confirming the reports.
The vessel is operated by Zodiac Maritime, a London-based company belonging to Israeli tycoon Eyal Ofer.
The company said that while it operates the Liberia-flagged MERCER STREET tanker, the owner of the ship is Japanese.

Israeli officials did not immediately acknowledge the incident, but it comes amid heightened tensions between it and Iran as negotiations remain stalled over Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
Other Israeli ships have been targeted in recent months amid a shadow war between the two nations, with Israeli officials blaming the Islamic Republic for the assaults.

Earlier this month, a UAE-bound vessel, previously owned by Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime was struck in the northern Indian Ocean.

A brief initial statement from the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said an investigation was underway into the latest incident, which it described as happening late Thursday night just northeast of the Omani island of Masirah. The location is over 300 kilometers (185 miles) southeast of Oman’s capital, Muscat.

The statement did not elaborate, other than to say that it suspected the attack did not involve piracy. Earlier on Thursday, the British military group had said it was investigating another unexplained incident in the same area, but it did not elaborate.

Oman did not immediately acknowledge an attack and officials there did not respond to requests for comment. The US Navy’s 5th Fleet, which patrols the Mideast, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In recent months, Israel and Iran have accused each other of attacking a number of merchant ships, damaging them with explosives. The vessels in each case were only lightly damaged and there were no injuries in the incidents.

On February 26, a blast struck the Israeli-owned MV Helios Ray, a Bahamian-flagged cargo ship, in the Gulf of Oman. Then-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of attacking the ship. Iran swiftly denied the charge, but experts say the attack bears hallmarks of previous attacks ascribed to Tehran.

Another Israeli-owned vessel reportedly came under missile fire in the Gulf of Oman in late March, possibly by Iranian forces.

The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Israel has targeted at least 12 ships bound for Syria, most of them transporting Iranian oil, with mines and other weapons.

Iranian media did not immediately acknowledge the attack Friday.

The INS Magen, the Israeli Navy’s most advanced Sa’ar 6 corvette missile ship, docked in Haifa’s port in December, but the ship still smells new, and is still being fitted with all its weapons systems.

“It’s making history,” said Lt.-Col. Omer Carmi as he welcomed The Jerusalem Post onto the ship. “The whole ship is new, in every single way. Even some of its technology is completely new to the Navy.”

The 90-m. long 2,000-ton ship is one of four Sa’ar 6 corvettes that will form the backbone of the Navy for decades to come. It is expected to be operational next year.

The new ships mark a transition in the Navy’s combat doctrine that is geared toward the ever-changing regional threats that face Israel, and will play a greater role in detecting and destroying enemy targets and threats.

The Navy was given the job to defend the country’s economic water – double the size of the country– in 2013, and work began on the new ships that would be needed to protect national infrastructures kilometers away from shore from enemies who fight in asymmetric ways.

The Sa’ar 6, Carmi said as he walked the halls of the ship, “were built to protect strategic assets and protect the gas installations.”

Each German-made ship has advanced air defense systems (Rafael’s naval Iron Dome and Israel Aerospace Industries’ Barak 8) and Israel Aerospace Industries MF-STAR (Magen Adir) radar that provide 360-degree hemispherical coverage around the vessel, and can detect threats like ballistic missiles at long distances.

The radar systems reduce the target acquisition response time and provide advanced ability to accurately and simultaneously track a wide range of targets. After a threat is detected, the ship’s battle management system using artificial intelligence will be able to assign the right interceptor to destroy the threat.

“While the Sa’ar 5 was built to protect itself, the Sa’ar 6 was built to protect others,” he said. “It’s my responsibility, on this ship, to be able to detect and destroy any threats and to do it with precision.”

All weapons systems, including advanced electronic warfare capabilities, were installed on the new ships while at Haifa’s port. The naval Iron Dome has yet to be installed as has the 76 mm. OTO Melara Super Rapid gun. Several rooms that we visited, including the command room and weapons center, are still a work in progress with troops installing wiring and more.

“This room came empty, completely empty and we built it from scratch,” Carmi said, adding that the Navy took it on itself to install certain systems.

The ships have a maximum speed of 24 knots with a range of 2,500 nautical miles, and will have a crew of 70 sailors who will be assisted by unmanned aerial vehicles and naval helicopters. And for the first time, female sailors will make up 25% of the crew. The ships were custom built for female sailors, with separate bathrooms and bunks for the female crew.

Cpt. Shira Kleager, electronics and defense officer on the INS Magen, began her service in the Navy on the Sa’ar 5, and was in Germany when the ship was handed over to Israel.

“When you don’t have 50% of the population, you lose out,” she said, but “co-ed service is built-in from Day 1 on this ship, it’s the normal reality on the ship.”

Though not much longer than the Sa’ar 5, the Sa’ar 6 have been built to better handle rough seas and stay at sea longer, and if needed, can take part in Israel’s “war-between-wars” campaign against Hezbollah and Iranian entrenchment on the country’s northern front.

“There’s no limit to how long we can be at sea,” Carmi said, explaining that the ship can be refueled and restocked while still away from the dock.

The Sa’ar 6 ships are part and parcel of the IDF’s new multi-dimensional warfare strategy, which is a key part of the military’s Momentum multiyear plan to quickly and efficiently defeat the enemy.

Under the plan, all branches of the military will be interconnected and work directly together to increase the number of enemy targets that can be destroyed, and aid ground forces on the frontlines.

Should a war break out, the Sa’ar 6 ships will be deployed to protect Israel’s Exclusive Economic Zone and gas rigs while the rest of the fleet would assist ground forces by bombarding enemy targets.

With the ships’ connection to ground-based air defense systems along with their advanced radar and interception capabilities, the Sa’ar 6 will be a central part in sharing combat data with other military branches in a war-time scenario.

In addition to interception missile defense systems and cyber-electronic warfare systems, the ships will have 16 anti-ship missiles, one 76 mm. OTO Melara Super Rapid main gun, two Typhoon 25 mm. remote weapon stations, and two 324 mm. torpedo launchers for MK54 Lightweight Torpedoes.

Though just 10 m. longer than the Sa’ar 5, the amount of firepower on the ship is phenomenal for its size. And custom-designed to Israel’s specifications, the Sa’ar 6 have a low radar cross-section design, making them almost invisible to enemy radar systems.

With the INS Magen and INS Oz already in Haifa, the two last ships – the INS Atzmaut and INS Nitzachon – were officially handed over to the Israeli Navy in Kiel, Germany, on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by the commander of the Israeli Navy, V.-Adm. Eli Sharvit.

Carmi, who was not in Germany when the INS Magen was named, told the Post that such a ceremony is “very moving.”

“A flag means sovereignty,” he said.

Large-Scale Israeli Attack Rocks Damascus, Multiple Impact Sites Burning

THURSDAY, AUG 19, 2021 - 06:00 PM

Extensive Israeli airstrikes targeting Syria are underway in the overnight hours local time, with major strikes unleashed in and around Damascus, as well as reports of attacks near Homs, according to Syrian media.

Residents in the capital are reporting the ground and windows shaking, in what by many accounts is looking like the the most large-scale attack in many months.

Syrian anti-air defense systems are reported active over Damascus, with social media footage appearing to show some initial intercepts of inbound missiles.

Arabic media reports a strike range extending from the Qalamoun Mountain region, which links Lebanon and Syria, with reports of attacks near Damascus International Airport as well as Mezzeh military airpot, according to regional Al-Masdar News.

Syrian state SANA is confirming the assault...

Prior to the most recent previous Tuesday night Israeli attack on targets in southern Syria, Israeli airstrikes had ceased for the better part of the month.

Before July, throughout much of the year into last year Israeli operations over Syria had been almost weekly.

Israel Bombs Hamas Sites in Gaza Over Fire Balloons, Military Says
By Reuters
August 29, 2021 02:43 AM

JERUSALEM / GAZA - Israeli aircraft struck Hamas sites in Gaza early on Sunday in response to incendiary balloons launched from the Palestinian enclave, the military said, as a recent rise in cross-border violence tests a fragile truce that ended fierce fighting in May.

Sanctioned by Hamas, the Islamist armed group that rules Gaza, Palestinian groups said on Saturday they were resuming protests at the Israel-Gaza border, aimed at pressing Israel to ease restrictions on the enclave. The Israeli military said hundreds of Palestinians gathered along the frontier during the night, hurling explosives and burning tires.

The military said its troops responded with "riot dispersal means" and Gaza medics said at least six Palestinians were hurt, one seriously. A few hours later, Israeli pre-dawn airstrikes targeted a Hamas weapons manufacturing complex and a tunnel it said was used by militants, after incendiary balloons were sent across the border.

There were no reports of casualties in the bombings.

An Egyptian-mediated truce ended the May conflict in which Gaza militants fired rockets toward Israeli cities and Israel carried out airstrikes across the coastal enclave. At least 250 Palestinians and 13 people in Israel were killed in 11 days of fighting.

But violence has recently increased despite an Israeli announcement this month of a resumption of Qatari aid to Gaza, a decision that had been seen as bolstering the truce.

Palestinian groups say Israel has yet to make good on its word and over the past two weeks militants have fired a rocket and sent balloons carrying incendiary material into Israel, setting off brush fires and drawing Israeli strikes on Hamas facilities.

Citing security threats, Israel keeps Gaza under a blockade, tightly restricting movement in and out of the territory that is home to 2 million Palestinians. Egypt also maintains Gaza restrictions.
