Sounds like a junkie.
Are you SURE nothing was stolen? I would have kept a sharp eye on her AND the old guy.

One looses nothing by telling such people to leave.
She was a nuisance, not a customer.

It was a display case, keeping a sharp eye on her was the whole point of the setup even without the extra incentive for attentiveness, and the old guy didn't go anywhere near. On the other hand, she still didn't actually buy anything. Intensive window-shopping and intense entitlement seem to go hand-in-hand.

Fair enough.
I imagined you in a larger store. I worked in several jewelry stores when I lived in HI. The lower end stores and small kiosks frequently keep a lot out on the counter.

If the merchandise was expensive, I would only show one item at a time, and the case keys were hooked to me, not left in the case lock.

Even in resturaunts and cafe's, two people will come in at a time and make some sort of distraction - attempting to say, get the cashier to make change for a large bill that they then slip back into their pocket. I've never been scammed that I know of, but I've dealt with people who tried to.

One place I've always wanted to work in was a pawn shop. That experience would definately would hone one's spidey senses.

I don't trust anyone, but certain profiles put me on high alert.
