Doom is ALWAYS 6 Months Away...
I think this is important enough for its own thread; I apologize if I am incorrect. But if you read the TASS article and his EXACT quotes he says that NATO will not retaliate if Russia uses a Nuke. He is basically saying Russia can use a nuke on Ukraine, and do it without any military consequences because NATO won’t risks their own civilian population.

This is a very disturbing development because if an individual (Putin and Mel.) think they can get away with something nefarious like a nuke then they will go ahead and do it. Psychologically, they have already convinced themselves that they can act without consequences.

I disagree with the assessment that NATO would do nothing if a nuke is used, I also disagree that Russia is just going to use a nuke for the hell of it in Ukraine. The only reason to use a nuclear weapon would be to stop a Ukrainian offensive, which unofficially I believe will stop. The only other reason would be to destroy a supply area where foreign military equipment is stored or where aid is being stockpiled.

I figured a while ago that it would come down to Russia and the U.S. Everyone else will just sit this one out because either they don't have the hardware, or they logically don't see this as their fight. It will probably be two shots...and attack and a retaliation. After that, there probably won't be much left to fight with.

Our elected officials have been convinced they can act without consequence for decades.
Why should Moscow be different.

I'm reminded of Ambassador April Glaspie telling Saddam Hussien that "...we have no interest in your inter-Arab disputes..." leading him to think he had a green light.
I remember that. I think Sadamm H even asked her THREE different times during their meeting so that there would be no misunderstanding

I would think the best move would be to walk away, give Russia the eastern part of UKR. What other choice is there? War on Russia proper? Good luck with that. Immediately start the destabilization of Belarus. At the end you walk away with most of UKR and hopefully all of Belarus.

Now, if global depopulation was the goal all along as with covid/Vax, then by all means nuke away.

As I have observed previously, I see no appreciable military utility in Russia using "a nuke." What on Earth would they use it against and why? For the sake of clarity I can see how and why they might use several small nukes, but the rhetoric is always about "a nuke," not the plural.

The Russians could easily destroy military command and control centers, troop staging areas, government centers and Ukrainian utilities with conventional munitions (to include smart missiles and fuel-air bombs). They don't need nuclear weapons to do any of that and in the case of Kiev, that is a historical Russian city and the Russians almost certainly wouldn't want to obliterate it.

Also - and meaning no offense - I believe that people who incessantly make reference to "a nuke" don't really know what the 'ell they are talking about. The Russians (from best open source reports) have an incredibly wide variety of nuclear weapons of different types. They range from sub-kiloton devices up to massive weapons with a yield of many tens of megatons.

Some of them are designed for optimum ground burst detonation and some are designed for most efficient air bursts. Some are designed to be very "dirty" (or highly radioactive) and some are designed to be relatively "clean." Some of their weapons are neutron bomb type devices which are designed to efficiently make nearby objects radioactive through neutron activation and some are designed to maximize blast effects.

So what, exactly, is this single nuke that some people seem obsessed with and why would the Russians want to use it?

I give up.

Remember Hitler in Austria? Same thing. Appeasement doesn't work. Putin will just chow some other place next.

Like a supply convoy crossing the Atlantic? Nuke the convoy in the middle of the Atlantic

And to Flex and I think on the world stage they may be seeing the need to do this. They have lost much in this whole thing and I think they may feel it is the only way to regain their perceived power on the world stage. I think they believe they need a dramatic event.

NATO does not have to respond with nukes. The conventional military option will destroy russia's military in 72 hours. We all know that russia has a third rate military. NATO should destroy all of the russian military in occupied Ukraine including the Crimea and push the russians back into russia. This can be done without using nukes.
