Liver cleanse?

Hi all;

I'm just about ready to do my annual colon cleanse (shudder) which at my age will take me about 6 weeks and from a lot of the research I've done a good follow up to the colon cleanse is a liver cleanse. I've read that the colon cleanse needs to come first because when you do a liver cleanse it will dump a lot of the toxins from the liver into the colon.

I'm not symptomatic of any malady that I know of and I would rate my heath between very good to excellent but as I'm getting older I'm paying a little more attention to being proactive with personal health issues.

My question would be to anyone who has done a liver cleanse what are the side effects, what physiological changes did you experience during the process and what kind of longer term health effects have you experienced. Also did you purchase a cleansing regimen or did you cobble together something on your own?

TIA :p

I would be interested in knowing how you go about this? The only thing I know to use is milk thistle, but have not done do because I am allergic to golden-rod and they are the same family.

At present, I am hoping to get some cleansing effects to my liver by not eating any heavily processed or restaurant food. Only clean food as good as I can get-no factory-farmed meats, etc. Nothing out of a can, jar, or box (except tuna and salmon-quality brands).

I do feel better and more "buoyant".

Over time I hope my liver can get rid of current toxins as I try not to add more.

Whoa, goldenrod is one of my favorites, but I use it for urinary system, lung and sinus health. I don't know how I'd do without it anymore and sure would miss it.

For the liver and gallbladder, I don't notice any difference with the milk thistle.

The mint family is my favorite for liver and gall bladder, and it helps lungs, too. Tea, singly and in blends. Peppermint and spearmint mostly. If my gall bladder is acting up, I hit the creeping charlie aka gill over the ground aka ground ivy aka Glechoma hederacea. When my breathing gets bad, a mug or two of mint tea daily for two or three days clears me right up, and makes the liver and gall bladder happier.

The only fats I tolerate and have tried are olive oil and vegetable shortening. I don't know anything about peanut, coconut and all those other good fats.

I don't trust the cleansing. Yep, I've done some reading up on the ideas. It just doesn't make sense to me. This old pile of bones needs comfort and good nutrition. It's seen enough meanness.

HFcomms, does that colon cleanse make you feel a lot better? I guess you think it's worth it if you're planning to repeat it. But why? Is it because you feel better? Or do you think it's just a good thing to do?

The colon cleanse probably is not necessary if you eat a totally healthful diet with no processed foods and no chemical additives and eat 60% of your foods raw. Since few of us are able to eat like that a colon cleanse is necessary on an annual basis and for those that eat really unhealthy they better do it twice a year. I see the cleanses more as preserving the health that I already have as I get older and not to feel better as I feel pretty good. However for someone who is in marginal health, not feeling well and is looking to get healthy you'll feel a lot better after you do it. The cleanses that I do are herbal only and also work on the upper GI tract for cleaning as well.

There are so many things that you need to do to maintain a healthy body, having a healthy colon is overlooked. On a daily basis most people take a number of supplements and vitiamins to maintain their health but taking something for your colon is not one of those things that regularly crosses your mind. Nonetheless, it is a very important part of your overall health. Here are 3 reasons to do a colon cleanse on a regular basis:

1. To Relieve Constipation- The job of your colon is to properly eliminate all waste (fecal matter). Sometimes, you will get a buildup though, and that is bad for you. When you build up fecal matter in your colon it often times will cause constipation. One of the best ways to get rid of constipation is through a colon cleanse, as it clears out all the built up waste in your colon. Without all of the built up waste your colon can function to its full potential and you will eliminate easier and completely.

2. To Detox Your Body- As mentioned above, your body will build up waste in your colon regularly. Not only will that cause constipation, it also will just sit in your colon, seeping into your blood stream and diminishing your overall health. Many people have parasites living in their colon and cleansing is a great way to clear those out as well. Common symptoms are bloating, head aches, nausea and many more. By clearing all the waste in your colon you will improve your overall wellness.

3. To Lose Weight- When your colon is full of waste you will feel very bloated and have a lot of weight stuck in your colon. Taking a colon cleanser will remove this. Also, colon cleansers are one of the best ways to kick off a new diet, because your colon will be functioning and processing food to its full potential. That is very important for you to really process all of the new diet that you will be doing.

Overall, colon cleanses are a very important part of keeping yourself healthy. Keeping your body functioning at an optimum comes with a little bit of work, but the benefits are really amazing. You will feel better, be less bloated, and have a functioning healthy body with a little bit of work.

Plus, having a healthy colon greatly reduces your chance of getting colon cancer. Eating healthy, and cleansing are the best ways to achieve that healthy colon.

The products that I use are from a master herbalist and I've been doing this now for about 13 years on an annual basis and I've not had a sick day in 13 years as well.

About Our Intestinal Tune-Up

Our Intestinal Tune-Up is made from the following 15 herbs to cleanse the intestines of old fecal matter, undigested particles and mucous. None of these herbs are habit forming.

Phyllium Seed – Adds bulk and is wonderful at softening and absorbing old, hardened fecal matter.
Bentonit Clay – It has been said that it can absorb 40 times its own weight. When taken with plenty of water, the bentonite can absorb and carry the water to the colon. The water coming in contact on a consistent basis with the old, hardened fecal matter will help soften and release it. The bentonite will also absorb a great amount of the waste and carry it out of the body.
Cascara Sagrada – Causes the peristaltic muscles to activate thus helping break loose the debris and pushing it out of the body. Also helps to build muscle tone of a sluggish bowel.
Capsicum – A bowel stimulator and helps magnify the effects of the herbs. It also brings blood to the colon tissues therefore helping to heal them because of the extra nutrition and cleanses harmful bacteria.
Garlic – Expels intestinal worms and regulates the blood pressure level in the bowels helping to ease the pain of hemorrhoids and piles.
Rosehips – Adds bulk and stimulates the natural growth of intestinal flora which is very important to the health of the bowels and proper digestion.
Aloe – Heals lesions in the alimentary canal.
Rhubarb Root – Natural laxative and feeds the bowels the nutrition they require for good health and functioning.
Black Walnut Hulls – Kills parasites
Senna Leaves – Stimulates peristaltic action of the lower bowel.
Flax See Meal – Contains an oil that lubricates the bowels making passage of feces easier and smoother. The oil also helps soften and loosen old fecal matter so it can be easily passed out of the body. Also adds bulk and is absorbent, helping carry out the old waste.
Slippery Elm – Absorbs mucous and is very healing to the alimentary canal.
Licorice – Hormone balancing, especially for victims of diarrhea and soothes stomach and intestinal walls.
Marshmallow – Excellent for bleeding piles, inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal and smoothes the intestinal walls in which the clean healthy mucous coating has been eroded away.
Peppermint – Heals colon lesions. Helps to regulate diarrhea and heal dysentery. Restores circulation and oxygen on a cellular level and calms and soothes the stomach and intestines.

Thank you. That makes good sense and looks healthy.

Most of those herbs are on my tea and spice shelves. A couple I've been looking to add, the slippery elm and marshmallow.
