Black Mountain, Montreat dealing with catastrophic damage from Helene

The small towns in Buncombe County were among the hardest hit by Helene.

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. — While a lot of the attention in the wake of Helene has gone toward Asheville, the smaller communities in Buncombe County are working to recover after the devastating storm.

In Black Mountain, the police department says some parts of town finally have power, and they are optimistic other spots will be restored soon.

That said, the entire town of Black Mountain is still under a state of emergency. Police have set up a supply distribution spot at the Ingles on NC 9. But due to limited supplies, a max of one gallon of water is being given to each family.

CBS News has reported that at least 40 people in Buncombe County have died from Helene, the most of any county in North Carolina.

WFMY News 2 reporter Amber Lake was in Black Mountain on Monday and saw first-hand the amount of damage the storm caused. At one point, she arrived at a drainage ditch filled with debris, including a Toyota Highlander with its back end barely sticking out.

In nearby Montreat, the impact was just as catastrophic. Three bridges in the town were damaged by the storm, but they are now passable.

The entire student body of Montreat College was also evacuated. There are no longer any students on campus.

Both areas are still without water. There is no timeline for when it might return, but there are still ways for residents to get water if they don't have access currently.

The Asheville Regional Airport is serving as a distribution site for water.

In Asheville, there are water distribution sites located at Asheville Middle School on 211 S. French Broad Ave. and Pack Square Park at 70 Court Plaza.

Cherokee update 1 hour ago
RT 15:33
Had seen 2 or 3 days ago.. fema set up there but this is latest... so...
I haven't watched this as an scrambling for info elsewhere on my (gone silent) son..
Oh no, Cherokee County is over where Murphy is, and they are FINE. Lots of power outages, but no damage other than some trees down here and there. Normal storm stuff.

I'm talking about the city of Cherokee, which is adjacent to the Cherokee reservation. I'm less concerned now that I know Bryson City only had major flooding right on the river, and they are mostly okay otherwise. Still, a lot of poverty in Cherokee, so any hit at all to them is troubling. I think we're just going to have to wait for them to get power and cell service back -- this area isn't likely to have a lot of generators or starlink units.

Oh.. ok. Sorry. What I saw before WAS definitely adjacent to the reservation. It's probably in my history somewhere.. but that's overwhelming. The hotel was mentioned and the fema set up. It was a vid

I wonder if you can still get passenger service on Amtrak in Asheville. Are the trains still running up from Charlotte? Can move a lot of supplies that way. OK, maybe they haven't brought Amtrak back yet. I thought they were restoring service years ago.
There hasn't been regular rail passenger service to Asheville in decades. In fact, the line from Asheville to the east got tore up in the flooding in the Black Mountain/Swananoa/Old Fort area.

CAROLINA CATASTROPHE - Insane Hurricane Helene Destruction From Flooding Burnsville to Old Fort, NC

I've been storm chasing for the better half of 14 years, and never have I seen such massive destruction from flash flooding. The unfathomable power that the water in Burnsville and Old Fort has to of been coming down at is truly hard to wrap my head around as folks begin to pick up the pieces.

KAMALA: Disaster Resources Should Be “Based on Equity”?

Kamala’s previous ‘woke’ statements on disaster relief have come back to haunt her amid the total devastation of towns like Asheville, North Carolina.

Rt 1:37

If she really means that, then Cherokee (the city and the reservation) should be getting billions. Not so much most of Highlands, or the people on Lake Toxaway, or the golf courses in that area. But that's bullshit because people died who could've been rescued, had S&R been dispatched right away. And the little towns like Chimney Rock just aren't set up for this kind of disaster. Their first responders tried (I listened to the scanner), but they needed m-f-ing help. This is why we are supposed to have the fedgov now, right? To step in when the locals can't deal with something? Why are we paying taxes? For Ukraine? Bullshit!

But no matter the wealth of the people or the towns, it's bullshit to let them die after a disaster because they aren't freaking poor. But in this case, a lot of the people who died ARE freaking poor, and they STILL didn't get any help. Still AREN'T getting help from the fedgov.

Swannanoa River devastation in Asheville - Hurricane Helene aftermath

A lot of people have been asking how they can help. Here's what I saw October 1st:

I think the area is starting to get saturated with very legitimate help. I'm not sure how many more hands on deck are needed but I could be wrong. Water is the obvious thing needed since water systems have been compromised/contaminated so if you can find a reputable organization to donate to for water and food, that's a good idea. I was in Swannanoa this morning - they were hit HARD. The river swept through there killing people, reducing homes to rubble, and destroying businesses. I saw random people there just setting up tents with water, food, coffee, snacks. I think that's a great idea as people are in clean up mode, exhausted, sad and they need these things - they can't get these items anyway because maybe their car was crushed, their road is washed out, power is out so grocery stores are closed, etc. People need fuel for their generators (lines are hours long at the stations that are open).

There are communities stuck on top of mountains due to their only line of access being completely destroyed with no hope of it being fixed anytime soon. They're requiring air drops and rescues and these guys seem to be doing a good job if you'd like to donate - Aerial Recovery Group (links below).

I hiked about 6 miles into Bat Cave yesterday heading towards Chimney Rock. I'm not sure what they need because it's gone but like everywhere, they need food, water, gas. I'm hopeful that this whole community evacuated as there is just zero access to Chimney Rock/Lake Lure from the NW anymore. Downstream to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, it's just a mess. I haven't physically seen it because I couldn't get there but I've seen videos. The clean up is going to be enormous. I do know that helicopters are heavily flying here due to no access so once again, Aerial Recovery and other organizations actively flying there need help (they're actually flying to MANY mountaintops within a couple hours).

Wellness checks in the region are a good idea. A friend sent me https://www.unitedway.org/ as a way to sign up to do wellness checks if you're local. I'm not sure how that organization works but it's an idea. You can also look in forums and see people asking about specific addresses.

Crazy thing is, this is just a few communities. Asheville, Hendersonville, Burnsville, this whole region, needs assistance. People are coming to help in big ways now, though. I met a group down in the river today from Myrtle Beach, a search and rescue team. I talked with some Cajun Navy people on side by sides today. The more the merrier.

Update. Kids are doing well. Grocery stores in their immediate area are open and taking cash/credit cards. Unknown when running water will return. They are hauling water from a nearby creek to flush their toilets. Power is estimated to be back on by Friday.
Trash/recycling suspended indefinitely.
Went up to Asheville to bring the kids supplies.. power still off in their neighborhood. Water out for at least another six weeks. Roads going up were clear, lots of trees down.
Now we get to go home to a hurricane!

Local news article on TVA and the dams, which seems was mostly about warning about debris in the water even this far down. The water is choppy and muddy, so I wouldn't advise boating right now because spotting debris won't be easy. In a few weeks we'll have LOTS of color cruise activity on our rivers, so I hope the debris situation is dealt with before then or we'll have some major problems and probably a few drownings because people are idiots.

It's good that they aren't talking about water levels, though. Props to TVA for handling the water on the Ocoee and Hiawassee, and on the Tennessee River without any issues past those affected by the Douglas Dam release.

The dam shown is the Chickamauga Dam, which is still wide open letting water through. They've been building new locks for YEARS, which is why there are cranes in the background.

TVA works to manage historic water levels post-Helene, utilizes dams to mitigate flooding

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Hurricane Helene brought heavy rain and high winds to our area, affecting major water ways.

The Tennessee Valley Authority says the Tennessee river watershed, which includes parts of western North Carolina, received about 2 months of rainfall in just 3 days.

1728219783794.png

They say their entire team remains hard at work managing the water from this historic event.

TVA is managing water levels from upper east Tennessee as it runs down through the Tennessee river system.

This is also where the dams come in handy, because they have been helping lower water levels.

But debris from flooded rivers and lakes, particularly Douglas lake, poses a significant hazard.

TVA is trying to gather all of the debris before it gets into the dam.

TWRA spokesperson Matt Majors says that even though the water is not as high anymore, boaters should take caution.

"The water is really muddy and dirty right now, so trying to spot logs in it that may lie right under the surface can be challenging for boaters. So my encouragement would be, if you're going to go out there, just know it is more dangerous than normal because of the debris in the water. Wear that life jacket if they're out there, and definitely reduce those speeds."

Majors says there is still a lot of debris in Douglas lake and the Tennessee river south of Chattanooga.

If you want to see what lakes in our area are closed visit, TWRA social media for updates.

This is just a small sample of the damage around Lake Lure Baptist Church, which had flooding in its basement but is open with a generator and supplies with hot showers, meals, a washer and a dryer, and plenty of support. Lake Lure is still a mess, but people are slowly cleaning it up. Work on the Dam continues to clear debris and repair the road. The dam is completely safe and has been inspected several times. It was engineered very well and has no problems other than the road and debris in the area.
