China's parliament has passed national security legislation for Hong Kong, the city's Cable TV reports, setting the stage for the most radical change to the former British colony's way of life since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Cable TV, citing an unidentified source, said on Tuesday the law was passed unanimously by the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress.

Beijing introduced the law in response to last year's often-violent pro-democracy protests in the city. It will tackle subversion, terrorism, separatism and collusion with foreign forces, officials have said.

A draft of the law, which will come into force as soon as it is gazetted in Hong Kong, has yet to be published.

More to come.

Have been to Hong Kong several times during my naval career. The last time was just a couple of years before China took over. As Hong Kong came closer and closer to China taking over the more corrupt, dirty and nasty the place became. During that final transition you could see things going down hill. Very sad.

Nobody saw this coming? I'm only surprised it took them this long but then it's always about timing with them. War mode perhaps.

So what does this mean exactly?
Well, one thing it means is that the UK is talking about allowing all three million HK citizens born before 1979 (when it was officially a British Colony) the right to return to the UK.

That is up to 3 million hard-working, highly educated, often business and banking folks to move directly to the UK and get back their British passports IF they can GET THERE.

Their families are also included so if your parents were born before 1979, the kids, etc qualify as well.

This is being talked about even with BREXIT being partly about stopping immigration, so you know even the conservatives are pretty serious on this one - it wouldn't be happening if BoJo didn't like the idea.

What no one knows is "how far" the UK is willing to take this, will they send one of their few battleships to escort a flotilla of "rescue boats" (probably just before war breaks out) or the other extreme of just wait and see who can manage to get to England on their own, something in-between?

Hong Kong is no longer a nation or island unto itself. It no longer has the ability to rule itself and now must do as China says in all things. So those special rates, etc you got from Hong Kong to do business with them are now gone. There is no rule of law in China so you can get screwed by edict. In HK at least they used to use the rule of law. No longer.

That would make for an interesting contrast to the Pakistanis and refugees they've allowed themselves to be swamped by.

China waited until their economy was able to be larger than HK. When they got HK in 97, it was a huge money maker. You don't kill the golden goose. now that they have more geese around China, they can now kill the HK one and bring it back into the fold.

Wait for them to move on Taiwan next.

To be fair, a lot of their issues are with more recent arrivals, the UK has had "enclaves" of folks "from the Empire" for around 200 years plus now.

Older generations of Pakistanis and Indians tended to be hard-working professionals, often retired UK military veterans who settled down to open shops and businesses, their kids were encouraged to become professionals; those communities are well represented these days in the worlds of medicine, law, finance, business, and even government.

Sometimes their GRANDKIDS and children are targets of "radicalization" so nothing is totally safe, but they don't have nearly the issues that the newcomers (last 25 years or so) have; like trying to "patrol" areas and hassle people walking dogs or women with bare arms.

Now Sweden, that's another story, they had no long-history of "empire" folks moving back, there was no "place" kind of already there for them and Sweden did make one so they made "their own."

I'm glad we don't live there anymore, for a number of reasons but that is a major one - but different topic.

I'd expect the yellow umbrellas to come out back in force very soon. China may have a national security law on the books for HK but I'd guarantee there are LOTS of HK citizens will begin to fight for the laws and regulation pushed in the least return agreement.
The Brits will probably lead from the background on this coming insurrection-with US help of course. The communist Chinese signed a 50 year agreement and broke it in 20.
HK is one place, the ROC on Taiwan is another. If the Communists move against the ROC war will result, not protests.

Everyone know this would happen. Nobody in their right mind thought China would honor that deal. I was in HK in 1998 and I remember going to see the Chinese guards because I wanted to see their bullpup rifles. Those were some serious looking fellows. I am surprised that CHina tolerated them for this long.

Neither here nor there.

Interesting makes one wonder if this is why travel to and from Hong Kong/China has been stopped and not because of the virus.

It gets even more interesting when you consider the problems that the US is having at home and with Corona. I'm thinking that by November that we won't have a whole lot of strength to go help out HK, Taiwain, or anyone else who suddenly wants help. There is part of me that says if they want their freedom they should shed their own blood for it.

Ask the people who fled Hong Kong in the 1990's. There never was going to be a free and independent Hong Kong, any more than Tibet was. They had a 20 year run, and given the nature of the MARXIST SCUM NOW RULING CHINA THERE COULD BE NO OTHER OUTCOME. Taiwan sees this and is arming up for a credible defense. As for the Marxist Scum ruling China they are under IRIS DEI the wrath of God mode. I look at China and see a country in total collapse, everything from gold fraud, disease, dams about to collapse, economic chaos and being despised by the rest of the world. China's XI the merciless is a man under judgment, and who has led his entire nation and people under judgment.

The West is spineless and eill do NOTHING because China will sell their American bonds and that will be that. China will stop selling medical drugs, ppe and other supplies
I personally will at least look and try to stop buying made in China items, but that is nearly impossible to do. XI the merciless is dumping VAST amounts of water downstream of three gorge dam, so between the flooding, the locusts, the dead pigs etc, they may slit his throat from starvation.

Are you sure about that?
My understanding is that the new law also criminalizes criticism of the CCP OUTSIDE OF CHINA... I am very concerned why they feel they can uphold that. Do they plan to be in a position to prosecute their law outside their current national boundaries? Watch out Taiwan. Watch out us?

TheSearcher

Are you sure about that?
BTW. Hey China!
