Our county schools started back today. My plan is to begin our homeschool after Labor Day. However, we just cut up some sweet potatoes to see if we can get them to root (Science), then the girls pulled out our puzzle maps of the US and the world and are doing those (Social Studies). The oldest (10) has asked if we can bake after lunch, so that’s math, science and home ec. Then we’ll read part of the current book we’re reading. Guess we’re having a school day after all, lol, or at least part of one. ;)

It seems like it comes earlier every year. Most of the schools in our area went back to school on Tuesday August 2nd. I remember the day after Labor Day being the traditional start.

Jeez , they finish school here end of May and return to school first week of September for Secondary school.

End of June till first week of September for Primary school.

My grandson in Indy started pre-k August first. I am happy to report that he is loving it. Mommy had a few tears when he was dropped off. He told her, "Okay, one more kiss and then I have to go.". He gave her the kiss, and walked into the class room like a little man, only turning once to wave good bye. The other two in Illinois will start Monday, August 8.

The reason I was given for such early starts is that there is more time off during the year with holidays and teacher inservice (whatever that is) and apparently there is a week or more for spring break. Like you all, I remember school starting after Labor Day...and we still sweated so bad in those un-air conditioned rooms, that if you were a girl wearing a dress or uniform (accepted dress code back then) you thighs would pretty much melt into the varnish on those wooden desk seats and a layer of skin would just about come off trying to stand up! The only way school could start this early in August is because of air conditioning in almost all schools.

Same date here. Only reason I had a clue was because of an acquaintance who runs a homeschool co-op. She's getting flooded by insane levels of people who have made last minute choices to homeschool their kids.

Bunch of crap. Schools should start after Labor Day, at least in the Midwest, and not contain all of those half-days and "early outs." Focus and get the job done!

And that's the great thing about homeschooling at any age! We loosely follow the local district calendar, with the exception of always starting after Labor Day. But homeschooling for us doesn't stop and start when the semesters stop and start. There isn't a day that we don't have social studies/geography, American government (!!), math, science, home economics, and a whole bunch of other "electives". This summer she was interested in learning about business, both big and small, so we spent quite a bit of time on that. She's always been an avid and advanced reader.

Homeschooling has fostered a love of self-directed learning for our young'un. On her own, she spends extra hours on various subjects or sub-topics she's interested in. Proud of our girl, and it's very enjoyable for DH and I both.

I feel sorry for students that essentially have public school year-round but with slightly longer winter and spring breaks; I would have not done well at all with that sort of schedule and that was eons ago.

I lived with starting after Labor Day and ending the first week in June, depending on how many snow days we had to make up. I couldn't have handled year-around school. We didn't have a/c back then, and the last week was always too freakin' hot.

Same here, Meemur. Start after Labor Day and school was always out before Memorial Day. NO a/c whatsoever. Hot and muggy, really awful.

This ^^^

They are just messing up the end of summer. There is no good reason to be in school in August. The football teams and such can practice whether or not classes are in session.
Agreed! Summer should be sacred. Time to play for the little ones and a chance to make some money over the summer for the oldest ones. And time for families to do stuff like hiking and camping and travelling and seeing Grandma and Grandpa!
