INSANITY Kids School

Just received an email this morning. The kids distance learning school year will end the end of May instead of mid June. The most interesting part was a note that they are preparing for the potential of distance learning for the start of the next school year as well. That is nuts.

In Ohio, our schools are finishing the year online and yesterday Governor DeWine said they have to decide about the Fall start. They are waiting to see how widespread the virus still is the state. Three of my children are teachers, elem, middle, and high school/college. Sure hope they won't be laid off.
Wright State Univ. announced pay cuts as they try to keep alive. My daughter-in-law works in marketing there. She and my son , the elem teacher, can't afford that. They have two little kids, a mortgage and tons of student loans! Going to be a very interesting year or two.

Evidence here in PA of the same.

Irony is that once all the lessons and videos are on-line, once the curriculum gets solidified so to speak, all the educators who worked hard to set lessons up on-line will be terminated.

It's bad to be replaced by a machine. It's worse to help build the machine that will replace you.

Right now the educators have been lined up, marched into the cemetery, and have been given shovels.

Mecoastie, I have school age kids as well, and am school board president of our church dayschool. We decided that we have to plan for at a minimum, rolling quarantines, at most, complete distance learning for at least the 20/21 school year.

It will be better to have a plan and not need it, than not have a plan and need one.:hlp:

And a lot of the support network of buses, cafeterias, janitors etc will follow.

Distance learning is different from virtual school. Many states already have a robust virtual school in place. Florida's virtual school is a huge asset in this state. There are still teachers. Lessons are online but the teachers proctor the course, but I agree that there won't be the need for as many teachers. Teacher to student ratio in FLVS is 162 and that's fairly low.

FLVS serves both full-time and flex students. The Full time program is for students that want to take their entire school program online. Flex is the more popular option. If you are dissatisfied with the distance learning being provided by your school district, investigate other virtual schools and see if you can qualify.

To serve Florida students, FLVS has created a FLVS Flex program that provides online instruction to public, private and home education students eligible for Florida public schools who receive their primary schooling through a traditional brick and mortar school. Serving students primarily in grades 6 through 12, FLVS Flex offers more than 150 online courses for students, served by certified instructors. FLVS also has a tuition-based program for students residing outside of Florida.

If you are ready to take the plunge and home education (homeschool) your kid you have a ton of options out there from standard school curriculum (entire programs to individual subjects) to unit studies to the classical approach (ambleside online is an online and free program like this) to just about anything you can imagine. A good resource is Rainbow Resource for what is out there (no affiliation, just have used them for almost 20 years).

Then there are people you don't even think of like the mechanics that service the schools, the deputies that are onsite and many schools these days, the bus garage/yard mechanics and maintenance people, the crossing guards, the people that maintain the district's book depository, the warehouse for extra classroom equipment, the librarians, school psychologists, school occupational therapists, etc.

I`ve got a friend whose wife is a teacher. She was told by her union rep that they do not have to do many of the things being asked by the school administraiton. I advised him that I thought it possible his wife was "auditioning" for a job next year. Being evaluated by her cooperation with administration as well as effectiveness with students.

It does look as though the future holds alot less for school personel and students.

I have four in school. It's constant emails. They keep changing the servers and go to different curriculums. It's not extremely difficult, but frustrating for the kids. Also, the Wi-Fi goes in an out here, which sucks because I pay quite a bit.

The therapists are going the route of telehealth to deliver service to the school kids. It’s far from ideal, but it’s a thing.

The economy and the schools and all that go with it are not coming back in the fall. The hoax is complete with folks taking the bait hook, line, and, sinker. There's something in the air you might catch. Better to stay home. With Love, Your .gov.

And you know this . . . how?
I don't KNOW anything. It's a hunch. Just as you don't KNOW it will come back or that .gov will "let" anything reopen. You are hoping they give you permission to do what you used to do. Funny how this worked out, isn't it?
