Kevin Costner Drops Utterly Insane Trailer For ‘Horizon,’ The Next Major Cowboy Western Drama

Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the extended trailer Monday for “Horizon: An American Saga,” and it looks absolutely freaking insane.

The three-minute trailer for “Horizon,” the first in a four-part movie epic from Kevin Costner, will make your heart beat out of sync. The series “explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many,” the description reads.

The movies span the four years of the U.S. Civil War (1861 to 1865), and “Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America,” the trailer notes.

“Trailers have always been kind of a favorite part for me, even as a boy going to the movies,” Costner told Variety. “You’re obviously there to see the movie you want, but isn’t it kind of cool when you see what’s coming? … And with that in mind, I did my very best to expose what’s going to be a four-part saga.”

It’s now clear why Costner was so reluctant to lean into his commitments for “Yellowstone,” a contemporary cowboy drama scripted by Taylor Sheridan. And you’ll even recognize a few other “Yellowstone” franchise faces on the screen (Will Patton, Danny Huston, Dale Dickey and more).

Other talent includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, Tatanka Means, Giovanni Ribisi, Thomas Haden Church, and honestly, I could keep writing names forever. Costner’s gotten himself one heck of a cast!

The first two chapters of “Horizon” drop June 28 and August 16.

I'm sure Taylor Sheridan spread himself way too thin, with the various movies and series he tried to juggle at the same time. But clearly, Kostner & he also had creative differences on Yellowstone. The last season focused too much on the family/personal dramas (for me) and barely addressed the actual real-life issues/conflicts going on.

Somehow, I am failing to see what is "utterly insane" about the trailer. I watched the trailer, though I don't watch Yellowstone. Too unrealistic. I see the new show is going to reproduce the "Young Guns" style long-haired villain, yet again. Only one long haired young villain I have ever seen in historic photographs, and that was Billy the Kid. Young Guns seems to have inspired a generation of western film and TV show makers who seem to believe everyone in the Old West looked like a hippie.

Looks like it will be an excellent flick. Will have to see this movie. Think in the time of the old west that there were lots more men with longer hair then people may think. One reason is that there were not barbers around on every corner back then. And still huge tracks of land away from all civilization around everywhere still. But they say the west was settled by 1890 do believe.

When I read "utterly insane" I thought "oh no, he must have made a psychedelic cowboy movie"

But I think they are using the phrase to mean "really excited to see"

Dove Chocolate tastes way better than their soap.
I just did not like what Sheridon put out. Could not get past 1st episode of 1923. Yellowstone was Meh. Costner's movie looks good. No wonder he had creative differences with Sheridan. YMMV.

Too pissed off. Yellowstone has been delayed forever and 1923. Or whatever that was called. Canceled Paramount+ and walked away... Yes, Sharadon did spead himself out to much.
I remember Costner saying he showed up on the set of Yellowstone and the show runners were not ready to shoot his scene.

Costner had is own investments he was working on and was livid at the Yellowstone producers for wasting his time.

It got so ugly that Costner gave the producers one hour a day to shoot his scenes. If they weren't ready he wasn't going to stand around all day.

Costner has it contracted that he will only work like 23 days on Yellowstone a year ( or did have) have they had to have it set so all of his scenes were shot back to back etc... Sounds like a pain to work with

just hope his movie is fair - I thought Dances with Wolves was.

And it appears to have a ton of Talent in this series

Looks like it might be good. I judge it on beautiful horses, excellent photography HA. Only in theatres initially, so it will be a while for us. I absolutely loved 1883....just beautiful. I liked Yellowstone, and 1923. Taylor Sheridan puts out a fantastic product, but agree, he spread himself too thin.

Looks good. Definitely will go see it. It was filmed all around southern utah, and one scene was filmed about 5 miles from my property. My dad was called to be an extra, but was on vacation at the time of the call and couldn’t make it. Hopefully it has a lonesome dove epicness to it.

Yellowstone isn’t too far fetched as you think, my neighbors could be on a TV show with their ranch, the hell they’re going through with wolves, death threats from wolf lovers, people shooting cattle because the state had to kill wolves on their ranch multiple times. The state and feds have pressured them every way you could imagine, threatening them over dead wolves, worse than Yellowstone wolf incident by far which I think they down played on TV.

The family own hardly nothing as individuals, everything is ranch owned, everything for the ranch, they’ve been featured in quite a number of publications

They don’t have a “train station” but…

There’s real ranches out there with real cowboys running them and they have real issues too

Time is money! I haven't seen the show other than the reels that comes across on facespy... so if he was truly pizzed off at production then well... it definitely comes through with his character in the show.

Costner's movies have been pretty good over the years. I'm open to giving it a shot. I thought Yellowstone was good, too - the first couple seasons. Then, like I said the focus shifted and it seemed blasé.

Concept in the show is based upon the area on the border of Idaho and Wyoming south of Yellowstone called the Zone of Death. Last time I read about it there was no person living in the area so no jury could be brought forth in a criminal trial.

I second that on wolf kills, it brings the insane to new levels. People go ape over protecting them at the cost of sheep, cattle, pets. And here when the Upper Mississippi River freezes in January the packs run the ice at night.

Maybe Kevin will revive the western genre with the new movie studio in Utah. Woke has a limited shelf life. And will be very dated in the future. We will be able to tell: oh that production was in the early, self righteous 2020's. Ted Turner tried valiantly to revive the Hollywood western. And he had great production values. Worth a try!

I’m aware of the area before Yellowstone hit the TV

Agree. I think Costner could have prolonged this film till he finished his job with Yellowstone.
I read somewhere Sheridan was POed because he had 2 or maybe 3 more seasons roughed out for Yellowstone but I'll watch pretty much any Duster Costner makes.

I watched the trailer
All I can say is:

WESTERN WOKENESS
Something I was concerned about was the wokeness on how badly the US mistreated the Native Indians. Which in the bad old days was shoot'em up doggies, and was thinking is this an extension of "Dances with Wolves"? Where the indians were benevolent and the Calvary was dirty, and foul, and the only good indian was a dead indian. Which included women, children, dogs and horses.

2nd to that, I may have to do some more research because right now it is flying over my head, and that is, the setting in the Civil War years? During the war people were moving in covered wagons west? After the war and during Restoration like yeah it was a flood, but during? And some of the indians during the war were fighting IN the war.

I only mention it cuz THEY said it was an historial American Saga.

I may have a little bias towards Hollywood and the Civil War era, and Civil War Saga's movies. Since they paint the South as scumbags and idiots, and the untruths about the war, are enormous.

If anyone wants to enlighten me go ahead.

Some quick research:

1860
15,000 people escape the threat of Civil War by moving west. Silver strikes bring thousands to Nevada, including Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). Russell, Majors, and Waddell begin the Pony Express from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Pony Express stops dot the Oregon Trail every fifteen miles; every other station is a stage stop. Sir Richard Burton, the English lecturer and explorer, visits Salt Lake City. There is a bit of wokeness in the statement in red. There was no war in 1860 there was a primary process for an election held in Nov. of 1860 and the Secession of SC in Dec.

1861, 1862, 1863
The removal of troops from the western frontier to fight in the Civil War drops emigration to 5000 in ’61 and ’62, and 10,000 in ’63 after word of gold strikes in Montana filters back east. The Pony Express goes bankrupt following the completion of transcontinental telegraph lines. Pony Express owner Ben Holladay extends his stage company to Oregon.

1864, 1865, 1866
Some of the heaviest traffic since the California Gold Rush, but many emigrants are bound for Montana via the Bozeman Trail. 20,000 in ’64 and 25,000 in ’65 and ’66 travel the Trails despite Sioux uprisings at several points along the way.

The end of the overland trails era began in 1866 with the formation of the Union Pacific Railroad Company. Following the “wedding of the rails” in 1869, an emigrant could travel from Omaha to the Pacific Ocean in less than two weeks

Costner makes a great western, and he knows it is a great investment as well. I just hope this new one stays the course. Sheridan creates decent stuff, but 1883 and it looks like 1923 are only one season, and Yellowstone really is just about the ranch shooting it out with some weird militia every season. Yellowstone just got more and more predictable, whereas the 1883 and 1923 shows were better and better written.

Point taken, but we all need a good western, and he definitely knows what works…. :kaid:
Just like Tom Cruise, I don’t care for his cult, but he sure knows what works on the Big Screen for non woke movies….
