CHAT Keurig coffee maker vs traditional drip

So our old drip coffee maker failed I decided to try the keurig craze. Had it 3 weeks. Even the dog doesn’t like it LOL. Didn’t know I’d have to use 2-3 k-cups to get a cup of coffee. Seems like a huge garbage waste. The taste is odd and your stuck with their flavors.

I guess I’ve been a coffee snob and didn’t know it. I use to grind my coffee every morning and used a drip machine with #4 cone filter.

Just ordered a new drip machine on Amazon today. Going back to my old ways. Miss a good cup of Joe.

you can buy a reusable plastic cup for the keurig.
make a cup of coffee with ground coffee in it. so, dont throw away keurig.

I do not like K either. The water sits in the tank, yuck. One time, I went over to someone's house, and there was mold in the refillable tank part with all the water and they had to wash it out. The little mesh and plastic cups that take grounds you can put in yourself have to be seated properly or the unit pokes a hole in the bottom, and many people can't see the little arrow that is supposed to be in the front. Even without that, little fine parts of the grounds get in the bottom of the cup.

You are not a coffee snob. The way to go is fresh water, brown paper filters in a drip coffee pot, more cost effective, too, if individual k-cups are used, those are too pricey. JMTCW.

Goodness before greatness.
I’m not a coffee snob, as I don’t really know about it all, but I do like an Indonesian, and a hot Colombian… er… or was it Cambodian… Well… you know that thing!

Well whatever it is, I like it in a personal sized Moka Pot. What I refer to in the shi-shi movies, a Cuban stovetop pressurized drip coffee maker.

Am I’m right when I say coffee beans have oils that brew through and out?

If that is the case, wouldn’t a paper filter absorb those, and change not only the taste, but the chemistry? Never having had chemistry, that is a sincere question. So I nEEd an answer NOW! D***!+

Disclaimer: L.A.B. has never used a medical syringe plunger in the morning to administer his Java Juice. And is currently under the influence of Fennel Tea… Which is a little boring but healthy on occasion.

For a rich creamy coffee, I use a Vietnamese infuser coffee filter.
I was introduced to this coffee at a couple of dinners in Saigon Ho Chi minh.

i also use a percolator, but mostly use the drip coffee maker as it's easy.
Again, I'll add some salt to make for a smoother coffee.

Keurig is too costly for me.

I got tried of how long it was taking

Assuming the jury is still out, on this one ?

:cmpcf:

My morning cup (quart):

Uganda grown coffee beans….(found online avail. in 50# bag)…..fresh roasted and ground, usually mixed half and half with Folgier’s Colombian….to make the good stuff stretch….

One oldie but goodie half gallon percolator pot w-stainless insert thingy, complete, dug out of the scrap pile…..

One wood-burning stove, freshly stoked with a five gallon bucket worth of kindling and smaller chunks firewood…..

One quart jar…..

Three quarters inch maple syrup in quart (small-mouth) jar…..

Two inches super creamy milk off the top of the half gallon jar, from my Jersey, “Petunia” (named her myself, as she strikes me as a goon…as in “Petunia the Goonia”……

Top quart jar with (a portion of) salvaged (yeah, I washed it, first) coffee pot contents…..

Stir well to mix all ingredients…..

Crank up TB and begin victimizing those who may not yet be so caffeinated……

Top off quart jar, as necessary, until coffee pot empty or chore time, whichever comes first.

When you get a cup of coffee from any of the fast food places, it comes with a lid that has a "sippy cup" hole on one side to drink from. Enjoy you Sonic Green Mountain Coffee and then rinse the cup and save it for the next time you use the Keurig. When you fill the cup with the Keurig, snap that lid on and take a sniff of the aroma that escapes from the "sippy cup" hole in the lid.

That is not the aroma of coffee. I do not know what it is, but I am not drinking it.

I gave up coffee about five years ago and I was a big time coffee drinker.
Never owed one of these Keurig's and I stayed with the Bun coffee (drip style) maker.
I found that some of the best coffee available can be bought from Costco and it's the Kirkland house brand 100% Clombain Coffee and comes in a 3 pound can.
Now this is great coffee but most use to much and find right off it's too strong! Most using a 10 cup drip maker you only need a heaping 1FL OZ. or 2 TPS is the same and it makes the best pot of coffee you ever had and that 3 pound can of coffee will go a long ways. Sounds to good to be true but give it a try and if you do not have a membership with Costco find a friend that does and ask then if they can get you a can of it.

I used to think Keurigs were ridiculous. My daughter got me a mini one for Christmas a few years ago and I love it! I can try different flavors of coffee without making a whole percolator full, since the husband doesn’t like flavored coffees. We use a west bend party perk for the regular coffee. Of course the k-cups have really gone up so I watch for sales on those.

Publius - I keep about a dozen of those 3# cans in the pantry year-round. Have for 20 years. Price has gone up lately; doubled from about $10/can to $20. But it's still the "house" coffee. Two of us go through about a can a month; and of course, coffee cans can be reused for lots of things.

Our Keurig went out a couple of months ago after only a couple of years, so I didn't replace it. We use a 12 cup drip coffee maker and also have a Chullux single cup maker. It's small like the ones you see in a hotel room and you pour the cup of water in the top and you get coffee in 3 minutes. They make little paper filters that can be used in the Chullux with your own coffee or you can use the pods. I'm not crazy about the refillable filters because they leave residue in the cup.

My hubby gets up at 2:30 AM, and doesn't like to make coffee, so he uses the Chullux. I'll make the coffee in the drip maker on weekends or if I have company.

We actually have good luck with the Keurig. I used to grind my own coffee and use a drip coffee maker, but after the first cup (4-cup carafe) the coffee tasted stale. With K cups, each cup is fresh. We keep ours clean.

Our problem is that the coffee makers only last us about 9 months, and Keurig is expensive.

I have a Hamilton Beach single serve coffee maker. It uses either the regular pods or you can use your own blend in the cup provided. it also has a choice between 8, 10 and 12 ounces. Since it is only me it works quite well! I recently spent a weekend dog sitting and they have a top of the line Keurig. It doesn't hold a candle to mine!

We only have a Keurig at work, so I'm pretty forced to use that one. I'm not very impressed with it. At home I use a drip maker for my daily routine/travel mug to work cup. But on weekends I try to take the time and use a percolator.

That being said, I have recently been gifted a Nespresso Vertuo machine. It IS AWESOME. The Vertuo uses the big pods to make coffee (sort of like a Keurig) but the coffee is SO much better. You can get it in lots of different varieties/sources/roast styles/etc. There are 2 styles of machines (big pods and little pods) and from what I've seen the little pods only make espresso. The big pod style (the Vertuo) makes espresso size, up to "coffee"-size (something like 8 oz). I've actually been drinking more coffee now, because it is so good.

We have a Hamilton Beach FLEX/Brew unit that RELIC found at Crazy Bins for 20 bux. (Yes that IS a DEAL!). We use the K-cups for most of our usage. We get them via "Ollies" or "Big Lots" at about 25 cents or less per cup, with LOTS of choices for Grind/Roast/Flavors.
One might remember that what Keurig-style brewers make isn't Old fashioned Coffee. They are programmed to build "Caffe` Americano" which is a shot of espresso and hot water.

OH DANG!!!

I wish I'd known that!!
My very FIRST K machine was the full-boat, control ALL the variables electronic one we got 10-ish years ago with a PHENOMENAL reservoir for water, ability to set the brew AND keep temps, etc.
I have NOT found another in 10 years.

I get the whole bean Eight O'Clock coffee and I have to say, just smelling the grinding of the beans sends my senses soaring. That's a little slice of heaven right there and I'm praising God that all my senses work.

We still have a stock pile from when I drank coffee, I have turned a fair number of coffee lovers on to the Costco brand and they were hooked.

Chuck - thanks for a trip in the way back!!!! A&P stores squeaky wooden floors and the incredible aroma of fresh ground coffee. EVERYBODY brewed it back then. my mother had an old glass percolator it lived on the stove and was NEVER empty.

BTW you can still find 8 O'clock - but we all know it will never be the same as we remember it. SKAMS KLUB and WALLY WIERD carry it

I still use an old glass drip coffee pot on the stove and think it makes the best coffee. The only thing with older coffee pots is the baskets, they are aluminum so not the healthiest.

I threw my functioning Keurig out (my daughter gave me her old one). Even using my own ground in a special little filter thingie, it tasted like crap. I offered it to a few, no one wanted it, so off to the landfill it went.

I hate bad coffee.

I saw 8 O'Clock coffee in Ollies a few weeks ago.

The Keurig is good for the sorts of gatherings where there are all sorts of picky people. At my last seasonal job, we had a seminar for 40ish people. I borrowed several Keurigs and filled trays with local pastries, cheese, and crackers. (There were also coolers with water and pop).

I bought several boxes of multi-flavors of Keurig coffee and tea.

Honestly by the end of the morning, there were several Keurig cups of pumpkin spice tea left (about 3), but that was it! Everything else was gone!

For once, zero complaints about the food and beverages. So, I would do that again if I were tasked with snacks for a similar crowd.

As for using the Keurig at home, no. It's too expensive. I make a pot of coffee and reheat it for the next day or two.
