Kerry Edwards Nixed Wendy's, Feasted Instead on 5-Star Fare

When John Kerry, John Edwards and their wives descended on a Newburgh, N.Y., Wendy's restaurant on Friday for a "light" lunch with the common people, it was all just a photo op.

Team Kerry-Edwards had already ordered their real lunches - consisting of five-star gourmet food from a tony local restaurant - with instructions to have the haute cuisine ready for pickup after the top Democrats ditched Wendy's.

"A member of the Kerry advance team called Nikola’s Restaurant at the Newburgh Yacht Club the night before and ordered 19 five-star lunches to go that would be picked up at noon Friday," MidHudsonNews.com reported on Sunday.

"Management at the restaurant, which is operated by CIA graduate chef Michael Dederick, was told the meals would be for the Kerry and Edwards families and actor Ben Affleck who was with them on the tour."

After tossing out their cheeseburgers and chili, Kerry and Edwards feasted on shrimp vindallo, grilled diver sea scallops, prosciutto, wrapped stuffed chicken and steak salad.

The meals came to about $200, MidHudson News said.

Well hey if I could afford that nice meal I would opt for it too and ditch the Wendys.

We all know they just show up for the photo opt anyway so nothing new there. Both families are multi millionaire so they can eat what they want.

I see no problem.

While Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards, and their families were having a “lite” lunch at Wendy’s in the Town of Newburgh Friday, drumming up local support right after the national convention in Boston, their real lunches were waiting on their bus.

A member of the Kerry advance team called Nikola’s Restaurant at the Newburgh Yacht Club the night before and ordered 19 five-star lunches to go that would be picked up at noon Friday. Management at the restaurant, which is operated by CIA graduate chef Michael Dederick, was told the meals would be for the Kerry and Edwards families and actor Ben Affleck who was with them on the tour.

The gourmet meals to go included shrimp vindallo, grilled diver sea scallops, prosciutto, wrapped stuffed chicken, and steak salad. The meals came to about $200.

The entourage had also expected to stop at the Alexis Diner at Route 9W and North Plank Road in the Town of Newburgh. In fact, the Kerry advance team had ordered 125 lunches for the team and supporters. Their buses drove right by the diner on I-84 and proceeded straight to Wendy’s.

Kerry may still have the vote of Wendy’s manager John Garrett. “I’m for anyone who comes in and likes double cheeses”, Garrett said. “I’m a big supporter of anyone who orders our food.”

True they can afford what they want BUT the impression they try to make via the photo op is a lie.

They are a couple of hypocrites.

Surely this is a mistake. I read in a magazine last week that Mrs. Edwards shops the sales at Target. Politicians would never mislead us. (Sarcasm off)

At least Edwards didn't try the "John Kerry and I sat down in Wendy's then sadly realized we couldn't afford anything on the menu" line.

Correct me if I am wrong here

But doesn't the campaign pay for the "lunches"? I mean this isn't a matter of them paying $3800 for 19 meals out of their pocket (even rich guys don't do that much), it's a matter of living high on the hog while on the campaign trail. These campaign contributions aren't restricted in their use. The candidates can order caviar and champagne for breakfast if they have enough money. It has always looked to me like the candidates love the campaign trail because of all the perks and the money that is donated has no strings attached. Im fairly sure there is no limit on food or other expenses for campaign money. My expectation is that campaigns are special purpose entities that are exempt from the accounting mechanisms of normal businesses or non-profit organizations. I wouldn't expect anything less since they are constructed for the benefit of the politicians who write the laws.

Wake up folks and smell the coffee, Bush is doing the same thing and loving every minute of it. Don't think that Dick Morris paid for his own hookers do you? The Clinton campaign paid for them, no doubt. Loook it up and see..............

By the way, what do you think Bush's campaign eats while on the trail and who picks up the tab?

I hate hypocrisy. And every day that I see the "two Johns" on the campaign trail, I see more and more of it. If you're a rich white guy, so be it. But DON'T try to act like you're "just one of the people", because you're NOT. And it SHOWS. So knock it off and just stick to the campaign. Stop offending "regular Americans" with your fake, bogus bullsh*t....

I recall a story about Al Sharpton always taking the best suite at 4 star hotels awhile back. Same with his meals.......he likes to hear himself talk and loves the perks. All the while......stumping for the poooooooor blacks out there. :bwl: :bwl: :bwl: :bwl: :fgr: :sht:

Onebyone, the problem is the hypocrisy, not the expensive meal. The photo op. was at the Wendy's, not Nikola's! And what about that diner they ordered 190 meals and then drove by and left them! That could ruin a small business man's month, financially. BUT THEY DON'T CARE!

Dennis,

I agree with you concerning hatred for hypocracy.

But "the two Johns" don't have a corner on the hypocracy market.

What kind of hypocracy was it when Georgie Boy posed for those pictures on the aircraft carrier with his pants so stuffed with something (hot dogs? polish sausage? three day old sweat sox?) to make himself look like a BIG HE-MAN warrior pilot.

Georgie boy was never a warrrior -- he was a well connected, sophisticated draft dodger of a different sort -- his wealth and connections bought him private flying lessons and a top slot in the Texas Air National Guard, at a time when the National Guard did not fight, but just served as a hangout for wealthy, well connected persons who did not want to fight in VietNam.

That hardly qualifies him to take on the image of a warrior pilot, one who actually fought and risk their lives in combat over VietNam or Iraq.

If hypocracy is using a photo op to create an image to be something that you are not, then Georgie Boy's stunt on the aircraft carrier is every bit as much a hypocritic image as is "the two Johns" sitting down for cheeseburgers at Wendy's.

Barry, I never said it wasn't. But when was the last time you saw Bush go to a fast-food establishment, or SAY that he went to one? Bush doesn't even TRY to make the claim that he's just a "regular guy". To me, Kerry doing that is so transparent an attempt to curry favor (where none is warranted) that I am HIGHLY offended.

Did you not notice I said "We all know they just show up for the photo opt anyway so nothing new there. "

Since I believe all politicians are hypocrites then I didn't even bother to look at that as that is what I expect of them since that is what they are. IMO, If anyone truly expects a politician not to be a hypocrite that person is being rather naive.
