I don't have enough run time on this heater to really compare burn times.

This was the second tank.

At $20ish per tank with kero, it would just sit in the corner for dire emergencies. $9 per fill up with diesel mix is a little bit easier to handle for longer term use.

The chicom diesel parking heater gets about 8hrs on a gallon, with similar heat output.

The drawbacks on it are having to plumb an exhaust and keep a battery and charger with it. Not self contained and it's power dependent.

I have a build out in a barndominium to work on, the structure has been spray foamed so it should be fairly efficient. I'll drag the kero heater with me and see how it does.

A 10,000 BTU propane heater did OK there, but it's in the $17/day operating range with about half the BTUs

ETA: A Seafoam bottle makes a perfect funnel for the kero heater. The plastic spout stuffs into the heater fill and holds it quite well.

Cut the bottom off with a box knife, leave the edges sharp...somewhere in that you should be ablr to cut yourself.

As often happens on TB2K, I clicked on a thread about a subject currently off my radar but found an absolute mini-library of good information which I bookmarked, downloaded and otherwise archived - we're aggressively looking for a new zip to call home.

We currently live in a red-steel/brick, cast concrete building with no way to vent auxiliary heat sources like Kerosene heaters and, we're in Memphis.

Yes we've had about 10-11 days of, to quote CBS Local weather Gurus, 'brutally cold weather'. Yes there were a few days/nights of single digit temps but all the vehicles started - not plugged in or boosted; they started and ran. This week, day time temps are predicted to be 10-15 degrees above normal so about 50± and hovering around freezing overnight for the next week.

Point one is MSM continues to only talk about issues identified on the SJW Scripts.

I guess if you live within 200 miles N or S of the US-Canadian border, you have a better sense of 'Brutally Cold' and are generally better prepared to deal with it.

Point two is MSM devotes almost no time to educating people how to deal with such events other than hunker down and hang on.

Point three is while I don't have an active need for the contents of this thread, I got the info at virtually no cost and knowledge, like education in general can never be taken away although I'm sure FJB & Co would pay anything to be able to do that. He's already sold his soul to get into the Ova Office so we might be safe there. I say might because we haven't made it through 2024 to the next Inauguration yet.

Anyway, apologies for the little rants and many thanks for the good info and suggestions.

You summed up exactly my motivations in pursuing this topic in the real (my) world. Sharing things that work and will help others is just my nature.

Funny you mentioned the bottle. I have always used the pump siphons that come with the heaters. I could refill a tank in less than 5 minutes outside. With this cold snap, 5 minutes proved too long. I used a medium size funnel (that sits in the tank pretty good) and poured the mix from 5 gal can into a wide mouth quart mason jar, then dumped it into the funnel. Repeat 4 times and the tank is filled from empty. Can do that in about 1 minute with only a few days experience.

No apologies needed, little rants and sharing info and suggestions is what it is all about and will simply become more important as time moves forward.

I know this thread as me reconsidering what I store. Because even red kerosene is pricey here. The current plan is to order Pri-D. And then get another diesel can. Then I can use my 5 gallons of kero mixed with the diesel if needed. I may mark a separate container and go ahead and premix it but since kero stores longer, in my experience, without additives, I may just leave it until needed. I'm not sure that we are through the nasty cold snaps this year.

Marking fuel jugs, all mine are red.

I picked up some good, electrical phase tape. (colored)

Diesel gets yellow tape.

D/K mix gets yellow and blue.

No ethanol gets white.

A coupla wraps on the jug handle and done.

It can get changed for seasonal needs.

I don't know about burning PRI-D.

Not sure what fumes it will emit from a wick type stove. Maybe nothing, but it is a consideration.

In a vented diesel heater, I wouldn't sweat it.

poured the mix from 5 gal can into a wide mouth quart mason jar,

I just mixed by weight.

3.5-4 lbs. of kero into the heater, top off with diesel.

These have a fairly small outlet, easy to control flow.

An informed/person (AKA prepper) used to be able to guesstimate what weather surprises might be in store for their AO. What I've seen in the last 15-20 years is we'd best have more storage space for a broader inventory and a better grade NOAA Radio.

You may just need an external antenna for your radio. You can experiment with just wire if your radio does not have an external antenna input. Or make sure your new radio has one.
