Vice President Kamala Harris was left red-faced during her visit to Puerto Rico on Friday after she was spotted clapping along to a protest song against her before realizing what it meant after an aide translated the lyrics.

After delivering remarks in the territory’s capital of San Juan, the Vice President visited the Santurce neighborhood to tour the Goyoco community center and meet community leaders.

However, a group of protesters were not happy with Harris’ visit.

The protestors held signs with messages, including “Kamala Harris war criminal” and calling the United States “genocidal” as they sang a protest song against her visit.

Harris could be seen smiling and clapping along to the protest song before abruptly dropping her hands when a staffer explained what was happening.

“We want to know, Kamala, what did you come here for? We want to know what you think of the colony,” an activist sang.

The song included the lyrics “Long live Free Palestine and Haiti too,” according to Puerto Rican journalist Istra Pacheco.

When Harris realized what the song was about, she nodded and folded her hands in front of her, in an attempt to not look stupid.

The New York Post noted that Harris’ visit came during a renewed Democratic campaign blitz targeting Latino voters, given the upcoming November US elections, although technically, Puerto Ricans don’t enjoy Electoral College votes for the presidency.

It is Harris’ first trip to the Caribbean island since entering office.

Harris also visited a home outside San Juan that had been rebuilt through a federal program following the damage from Hurricane Maria.

The Vice President also touted the Biden administration’s aid to the territory.

“What we all need to do then is just supply the community and the talent here with the capacity and the resources,” she said.

“And so, President Joe Biden and I have been very intentional about what we are doing for the leaders and the people and the families of Puerto Rico,” she added.

“So far, our administration has invested over $140 billion in Puerto Rico.”

The war has been a prominent theme for Iden and Harris throughout their trips across the US following the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Over recent months, the VP has ramped up her efforts as part of Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, championing reproductive freedom.

“We are going to win,” Harris declared later in the day at a campaign reception.

I'll admit ignorance here. PR is not a state. Probably not a territory. They are under the wing of the USA somehow. They can't vote in US elections, but somehow don't have to pay taxes. Can someone clue me in?

I think Ford or Carter offered to make it a state, but they knew they were getting a better deal without doing so.

Would *I* Lie???
Well, I dunno. First of all who was the idiot next to her who started keeping the beat? He baited her ass, she's just trying to keep along.

Secondly, who let the protestors close enough to be heard & drown out whatever *official* business was going on? This is the VP of the FREE WORLD (I know she's a muppet, puppet and nobody respects,).. but the damn foot stamping and tambourines of indigenous with a bone to pick should NOT be in the VPs tour...

*IF IT WERE, HOWEVER* ..hell yes clap and stamp a bit in rhythm- that's going to be the most 'backatcha' to protestors there to protest your work.. which I'm assuming is just US policy... while I generally don't side with the current foreign policy clowns, if they're bitching about "us genocide in gaza" they deserve the disrespected of her not even knowing the message and blindly clapping along. pretty hilarious. 'Not sure if intentional insult, or so disconnected from our plight you don't even know who we are insult'... classic. "who are you again?-sorry no hablo tortilla fiesta" jajaja

Not surprised and Puerto Rico is not a country and was owned by Spain for a few centuries before the Spanish American war and we won they lost and they handed it over to us. Puerto Rico falls under admiralty law and is a possession of the United States. There some rules or law passed and one of them is they are allowed to vote for their own government. They are exempt from IRS laws but at the same time all Puerto Ricans are United States Citizens which has it's advantages.

Thanks Publius. So, it sounds like they can vote for their own gov. but not ours in the USA. They are US citizens but don't have to pay taxes. That sounds like a pretty good deal so why would they want to become a state anyway? My guess is that the benefit of becoming a state is they would qualify for federal subsidies for infrastructure projects, fed. monies in case of a disaster, etc.

A couple questions remain (and once again, I don't know the area, or politics) If they are US citizens shouldn't they be able to vote in US elections? Because of the tax exempt status, wouldn't it be a really great place for huge resorts/casinos, etc.?

Those things may exist, and I've just never heard of it.

Another Island is the island of Guam and the people of Guam have been offered to have their country back and go as a independent country, but they decided not to and said there are to many advantages being a possession of the United States and Guam too is exempt from the IRS.
