I've taking large game with my bow.

And liked the heavier serrated heads, like..

Up to 150 grains. Absolutely deadly. And they really tare things up. Even shot a little high one time and broke the back bone clean through. Animals didn't suffer. Much like a old flint arrow head. They work great!

I somehow doubt that the thief "ran towards the boy", especially with his daddy right there, but since there is no one to contradict that story, it works.
Two live witnesses against one dead one wins in court.
The dad might not have even gotten there yet.

That young man is going to live with that death on his concious
Or even his CONSCIENCE.
Attorney friend of mine (Italian Lady from Argentina) once told me, if you ever have to shoot someone and they are outside, drag them inside.
That advice was good until modern forensics came into existence. Now however, not so much.
the thief was then taken to the local taxidermist where he will be stuffed and mounted and placed on display in the town square.............
I was going to ask if the kid gets to mount the trophy.

The picture I posted was a likeness of the ones I've used and have in my tackle box. Mine where custom made by a machinist. IIRC, ...125 grains for deer, 150 for bear.

I just did a search and see the ones you can buy on the net are few and far between. Infact sold out. The pictured one are not even available and the manufacturer said only for small game.

This too shall pass.
When I was a kid in the old days, I was at a Camp (Boys State) where a State Trooper demonstrating weapon lethality filled a 3 pound coffee can with sand and shot it with a .357 magnum pistol at close range, the bullet penetrated the can but did not go out the other side. He then took a compound bow with an arrow and shot the coffee can and the arrow traveled through both sides of the can. Heck of a demonstration for a youngster

Also a good demonstration of the stopping power of sand....

Juvenile hunter fatally shoots suspected thief with arrow: cops (msn.com)

Nelson Oliveira

A Missouri boy fatally shot an alleged thief with an arrow after catching the man trying to steal a tractor on a family friend’s property, authorities said Tuesday.

The unidentified juvenile, whose age has not been released, was walking toward a tree stand where he planned to hunt deer with a bow and arrows when he saw the suspected intruder stealing a lawn tractor and wood splitter from the property Friday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy called his father and a confrontation ensued between the two adults, authorities said. During the incident, the suspect allegedly ran toward the juvenile, the boy’s family told investigators at the scene.

The family’s attorney said the young hunter warned the man several times to stop and was “in fear of his safety” as the accused thief came closer, according to the sheriff’s office. The man apparently did not stop, so the boy released an arrow that fatally struck him, authorities said.

The suspected thief was identified as 40-year-old Michael Stotts. The juvenile shooter was not taken into custody, but the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities said the property has been the site of several recent thefts.

1. If the need arises, you will use what you have on you.
2. Be proficient with what you have on you.
3. Have your favorite tool with you at all times.

Quote is not working for me...

"I somehow doubt that the thief "ran towards the boy", especially with his daddy right there, but since there is no one to contradict that story, it works.

From the article....

"The boy called his father and a confrontation ensued between the two adults, authorities said. During the incident, the suspect allegedly ran toward the juvenile, the boy’s family told investigators at the scene."

Father was on the phone and not actually present at the scene.

Yes. Easy to see thief attempt to scare and or over power the boy.

She may have told you that, but that's generally considered to be horribly bad advice.

If they find out you did that, how's the rest of the narrative going to hold up?

The teef called the father on the phone, or vice versa? Or did the kid hand off his phone to the teef?

How did a confrontation ensue of not F2F???

Speaker phone ??

I was not there. Just quoting posted information in the article.

Article says boy called the father. It does not say the father arrived, then the thief went after the boy.

its not very clear on the timeline or how long these events took to happen.

did the boy, knowing what was going on, call his father immediately and not confront the thief? was there a lag? did the boy call his father, the father show up away from the boy and they start arguing, and then the thief charges the boy?

there is this part as well:

The family’s attorney said the young hunter warned the man several times to stop and was “in fear of his safety” as the accused thief came closer, according to the sheriff’s office. The man apparently did not stop, so the boy released an arrow that fatally struck him, authorities said.

it either was much more drawn out than they make it appear in the article, or once the father showed up, everything went WAY faster than they make it sound.

whatever happened, the kids had warned the thief several times, but he still went for the kid and the kid defended himself.

Tristan, she was making a point, that legally you don't want to shoot someone outside your home. Don't take what she said literally.

Inside, outside, up a tree, makes no difference to me. NC case law says I am justified in engaging threats outside my residence under a number of circumstances. Including shooting through doors windows or walls in case parties unknown attempt "violent and tumultuous" entry.
