The storm chasers on social media have been celebrating the last few days. They have used the term “gorilla hail” for years, referring to huge hail. The NWS is now using that term, too. The chasers are all but giddy.

North Texas has epic hail storms. I remember one year there was an outdoor event in Fort Worth. Everyone ran for their cars. The hail was softball sized and tore up tents and completely punched through windshields.

Edited to add: Found it on wikipedia

The 1995 Fort Worth Mayfest stormwas a supercell storm that occurred on the 5–6 May in the Fort Worth and Tarrant County areas of Texas. It affected a highly populated area with hail up to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter, as well as striking the local outdoor festival known as the Fort Worth Mayfest. At the time the storm was the costliest hailstorm in the United States history, causing more than $2 billion in damage. The hail injured at least 100 people, and flash flooding and lightningfrom the same storm killed at least 13 people.
I remember this one very well. I was safely at home about 15 miles away watching the TV. Channel 5 had a camera pointed out onto the studio's parking lot. I just sat there watching the hail beat the hell out of the station employees' cars. What a mess.

Neither here nor there.
Post-Mortem on my car. I have ONE DENT in the middle of the hood. Nothing else. And I was driving through it at 50 mph.

I think I need to buy a lottery ticket...

depending on what the dent looks like, and how deep, you may be able to pull it out with a tiny plunger.

Hail is actually very neat stuff. The storm makes a vertical conveyor belt, and by the time the hail is baseball size it may have made dozens of rides to the top of the storm.

We had a spring hailstorm here in Alberta this week and it was so funny watching two people in a golf cart flying by our place at 60mph on the trail back to the clubhouse. Clutching the clubs in the back and holding their hoods up on their jackets, and driver hunched over the steering wheel. Tiny stinging hail! Golfers!! :):popcorn1:

I went to Fort Worth to catch a plane for a trip to Hawaii at DFW in a couple of days. We got to the hotel about 30 minutes before the storm. The parking garage was full and I had to park on the top floor, exposed. The Mayfest was just outside the hotel. We watched from the window as the hail tore through the fabric tents and saw people running away to cover. I was afraid the hail would kill someone it was so big. Our car was a Toyota Previa. Every body panel had multiple dents and every glass was broken, including 3 large holes in the windshield - remember softball size hail. Early the next morning I drove to Sherman, TX as all the repair places in the Dallas Metroplex were full, but the guy, friend of my uncle, in Sherman thought he could get a windshield replacement. My cousin drove me back to the hotel and we left for Hawaii the next day. Came back 10 days later and the windshield had been replaced so we could drive it. Surprising how that worked out but my wife has a major prayer line to God. Insurance wound up paying over $10000 to replace the exterior of the car because it was $300 less than totaling it.

Wow that’s some big hail! Hoping your car and possessions survived intact!

Hail damage is dependent on the size of the hail and impact angle.

In all honesty Dennis, I'd buy a hail light and check it again. I won't BS you-there's more dents on your car. At the speed you were driving, you caught more dents than that. They may be 1/8" or less, but my guesstimate is 35-40 dents on the hood, 15-20 on the leading edge of the roof. I base this solely on 5 years factory licensed all manufacturers certifications inspection experience, and the dynamics of hail in a driving situation. You may not see it, but will guarantee any appraiser worth his license can.
I'm not trying to be mean spirited or the ultimate Debbie Downer. I'll always be honest with you and gut says more damage than you can easily, visually see.

There are people that can remove that small dent and no one will be able to tell it happened and may laugh about paying them for it too.

Overall it was about the size of a dime and perhaps ⅛” deep. I drove to a nearby town to run an errand, then stopped at the collision place. They went out to look at it. In the time it had taken to drive that round trip (about an hour) the dent had nearly disappeared on its own. I didn’t ask them to address it today. I said I’d look further on a brighter day. (It was gray and drizzly here all day.)

Hurray for you. I heard from someone else out that way that had both their front and their rear windows shatters like it had been hit by a baseball.

Paintless dent repair.

The process is quite effective.

DRY ICE.

Place it in the dent, rub it over the surface to the dent plus the surrounding sheet metal and let it cool the metal so that it contracts and the dent will pop back out. Do it soon before the dent sets into place through a few sunshine warming/nighttime cooling cycles.
