First day is good planting day for root crops where climate permits. Second day is good for planting aboveground crops such as sweet corn, beans, and peppers in southern Florida, Texas, and California.
  • 3rd – 4th
A good time to kill plant pests or do plowing. Poor for planting.
  • 5th – 7th
Extra good for peppers, tomatoes, peas and other vine crops. Fine for planting any aboveground crop where the climate permits.
  • 8th – 9th
    Barren days, do no planting.

I'm not sure why they're only giving the first nine days of January, hope to remember to check back here in a week to post the remainder of January.

Have you noticed prices on fertilizer? If you can find any on the shelf now pick it up while you can. A 40lb bag of 10-10-10 usually sells for $10. Today I saw it for $32. I can't even find anything higher. I'm sure that later in the spring prices will continue to go up.

That makes me glad I picked up extra fertilizer last fall :)
Already have broccoli, spinach and some volunteer tomatos going...potatoes getting planted next week.
Curious that only the first week is showing...

Got all my seeds bought, still have spinach and beets that look pretty ok outside. Hopefully it won’t get too cold tonight and kill them. I’ve never grown beets before and not sure about them….. the greens look amazing and I guess I should have been using them.

I’ll start seeds soon…. Hubby said he would help with moving the raised garden this month. He started moving blocks the other day. I wanted to change where it was located and he said he would help. I can’t wait to get it the way I want!!!

I’ve got a boat load of onion sets but don’t know when to plant them. I’m going to put them in raised beds. I’m borderline zone 8-9. Should I put them in now (we are getting down to 29 tonight or hold them a month or so?

Better get your seeds bought. Places are already running out of stock on some things.
Already got this years and next. I only plant open pollinated, so i save my seed. Like the seed catalogs just to se if there is anything i would like to add. You are right, if you need seed, sooner is better than later.

I'm planning on doing some winter sowing this year. It's the first time. I've got all my gallon jugs ready and just waiting for another week or so to start sowing them.

Has anyone here tried this?

You aren't the only one, Sue! It was 3 below zero this morning... gonna be awhile before I even think about starting seeds!

My Hyacinths are starting to poke out of the ground, as while we have had a couple of cold snaps, we haven't had much of a winter yet. I've noticed that my forsythia is also looking like the buds are starting to fill out. Heck a few are starting to show colors indicating growth. I know they will get smacked back with Mother Nature.

While I want to put seeds into freshly made potting mix, I will wait patiently. But, I am starting to buy what I can when I can. Who knows if in 6-8 weeks if anything will be left.

Yep…if I could, I’d sign my son and his family to work a community garden plot. There are some good ones in the area and I’d love for the grands to learn to grow things. Maybe someday.
