Ska music originated in Jamaica in the late 1950's -- it was influenced by American artists from the New Orleans area -- such as Fats Domino. Island musicians adopted those sounds they heard on the radio from the USA and created Ska music, which focuses on the downbeat. Ska eventually evolved into Reggae. You can easily hear the influence of artists such as Fats Domino on some early Ska tunes such as this one by the Skatalites...
