An oil tanker operated by an Israeli company reportedly came under attack off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea, the British military said Friday, with the company later confirming the reports.
The vessel is operated by Zodiac Maritime, a London-based company belonging to Israeli tycoon Eyal Ofer.
The company said that while it operates the Liberia-flagged MERCER STREET tanker, the owner of the ship is Japanese.

Israeli officials did not immediately acknowledge the incident, but it comes amid heightened tensions between it and Iran as negotiations remain stalled over Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
Other Israeli ships have been targeted in recent months amid a shadow war between the two nations, with Israeli officials blaming the Islamic Republic for the assaults.

Earlier this month, a UAE-bound vessel — previously owned by Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime — was struck in the northern Indian Ocean.

A brief initial statement from the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said an investigation was underway into the latest incident, which it described as happening late Thursday night just northeast of the Omani island of Masirah. The location is over 300 kilometers (185 miles) southeast of Oman’s capital, Muscat

The statement did not elaborate, other than to say that it suspected the attack did not involve piracy. Earlier on Thursday, the British military group had said it was investigating another unexplained incident in the same area, but it did not elaborate.

Oman did not immediately acknowledge an attack and officials there did not respond to requests for comment. The US Navy’s 5th Fleet, which patrols the Mideast, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In recent months, Israel and Iran have accused each other of attacking a number of merchant ships, damaging them with explosives. The vessels in each case were only lightly damaged and there were no injuries in the incidents.
On February 26, a blast struck the Israeli-owned MV Helios Ray, a Bahamian-flagged cargo ship, in the Gulf of Oman. Then-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of attacking the ship. Iran swiftly denied the charge, but experts say the attack bears hallmarks of previous attacks ascribed to Tehran.
Another Israeli-owned vessel reportedly came under missile fire in the Gulf of Oman in late March, possibly by Iranian forces.

The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Israel has targeted at least 12 ships bound for Syria, most of them transporting Iranian oil, with mines and other weapons.
Iranian media did not immediately acknowledge the attack Friday.

OTOH - When you want to justify a war

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War.[2] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian NSA employee), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[3] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.[1][4]

Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[5] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity.[6] Others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[7][8]

Yup Dstraito, anything at all is possible...

We've seen a # of these attacks, but if there "are" really casualties this time,
it may change things. Or not.

I believe it stands for the company "Zodiac Maritime"

The vessel is operated by Zodiac Maritime, a London-based company belonging to Israeli tycoon Eyal Ofer.
The company said that while it operates the Liberia-flagged MERCER STREET tanker, the owner of the ship is Japanese.

What does the Z stand for?

There was an old (like 20 years or more) fake video game from around the time of the Second Gulf War, it was an early online wonder and my husband loved it.

Basically, no matter how you played, it always ended with the world blowing up, usually after someone attacked Isreal. The game had a "punch line" of sorts when the nukes started to fly that has become a running joke in our household.

The line was: "Israel responds with tact and diplomacy!" followed by BOOM!!!!!!

And if I show this story to Nightwolf, that is exactly what he will say and it is exactly what I will expect - it may not be nuclear but they will "respond."

The magnitude of the operation is getting larger and larger as details emerge bit by bit and with what appear to be confirmed reports of earlier rumours or the drone striking the bridge, this event has the potential to be a tipping point in this “Tanker Wars”. It may not have a..
Sudden impact on the ongoing “spat” between Israel and Iran (who is suspected to have conducted this, and still very little from Iranian media) but the wider picture vis-a-vis the global nature of the shipping industry.

My initial thoughts...

By all accounts, the previous attacks were done with RPGs or such. They were fired low on the ship as to not miss.

Weaponized drones can be sent into the superstructure with a lot more accuracy.

sounds like Iran is taking a low profile terrorist attack mode - no media boasting or direct tangible IDed attack vehicle >> doubt if it makes a difference to Isreal - if a tarmac full of Iranian fighters blows up in the next few months - we'll know

This is what Iran wants/needs. They are having serious internal issues and a good Israeli attack might bring the people togeter to figt the common enemy.

Proxy crap continues and will until someone makes the next step. Just go ahead and hit Ali Khamenei's compound in Tehran. Make your message plain and clear.

Israel blames Iran for attack on ship, seeks harsh response
By Reuters Staff

Israeli alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid speaks during a news conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, June 30, 2021. REUTERS/Christopher Pike
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel on Friday accused Iran of having carried out an attack off Oman on a tanker managed by an Israeli-owned company and said a harsh response was needed.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said he had told Britain’s foreign secretary of the need for a tough response to the attack in which two crew people, one British and the other Romanian, was killed.

“Iran is not just an Israeli problem, but an exporter of terrorism, destruction and instability that harms us all. The world must not be silent in the face of Iranian terrorism that also harms freedom of shipping,” Lapid said in the statement.

The failure of the international community to respond to Iran's use - directly or through proxies - of explosive boats, drones, naval mines, & limpet mines in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, G of Oman, & Gulf is extraordinary. (1/3)
A tremendous amount of world trade & energy transits these waters along w nationals from multiple countries. Failure to act decisively risks a possibly unintended catastrophic incident in which Iran’s aggression cannot be overlooked. To be clear: this is how wars start.
Minor sanctions will not deter Iran or its proxies. Unless Tehran understands that its attacks threaten the operations of its entire shipping sector, such attacks are likely to continue. If we wish to avoid a conflict w Iran, the best course is a tough collective response.
