Top Iran general killed in Israel airstrike on Syria: report

July 3, 2023

A senior official in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted the city of Homs, central Syria, at dawn yesterday, Iranian media outlets reported.
General Hassan Suhani was responsible for manufacturing drones and electronic systems for the IRGC, the reports claim, though official Iranian news agencies have yet to comment on the reports.

Earlier, Israeli army spokesman, Avichay Adraee, announced that Israeli warplanes had targeted the Syrian air defence batteries which had fired an anti-aircraft missile towards Israel at dawn yesterday.
Adraee pointed out that Israeli warplanes bombed other targets in the city of Homs.
There were no reports of casualties as a result of the Syrian missile.

Meanwhile, informed sources said the Israeli air strikes have targeted areas considered strongholds of the Lebanese Hezbollah group and containing ammunition depots belonging to Iranian militias.

Iran Says No Talks, Ready to Help Palestinians Win by 'Force' Over Israel

Tom O'Connor

As deadly violence flared in the West Bank, Iran has asserted that Palestinians could achieve their goals in the decades-long territorial dispute with Israel only through the use of force, something Tehran would support if asked.
"Based on Iran's assessment, Palestinians cannot regain their seized rights from the Israeli regime through negotiation, as the Israeli regime only responds to force," the Iranian Mission to the United Nations told Newsweek. "Therefore, Iran supports any request for assistance from the Palestinian resistance."

Clashes erupted overnight Sunday as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a rare, large-scale operation using ground and air assets to target suspected armed Palestinian factions in the occupied city of Jenin, home to a sprawling refugee camp at the heart of more than a year of heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions.
In the latest assessment, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari counted eight Palestinians killed, all of whom were said to have been combatants, and additional injured. He told reporters Monday that the operation "to dismantle terror activities" in the camp had upturned financial and weapons infrastructure used to support militant activity.

Responding to Newsweek's question about concerns regarding Israeli archfoe Iran, which has maintained ties to a number of Palestinian factions, Hagari argued that "Iran is playing a role of negative influence" and also directly "supplying" Palestinian fighters.

"Iran has a huge motivation that there will be terror activities in the West Bank," Hagari said. "It's in the benefit of Iran. She tries to bring money and arms inside the West Bank."
Among specific Palestinian groups, Hagari said that Islamic Jihad had received "100 percent Iranian support" and that "also some of the force buildup of Hamas is based on Iranian money."
Hamas and Islamic Jihad, both based in the coastal Palestinian enclave of Gaza, have cultivated support among disaffected youth in Jenin and other parts of the West Bank, Jerusalem and within Israel itself.

Reached for comment regarding Hamas' position on the current clashes, a spokesperson referred Newsweek to a series of statements issued by the group's officials Monday, including political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who urged "the Palestinian people in the West Bank to support Jenin and safeguard its citizens to foil the occupation government's schemes" and Al-Qassam Brigades commander Saleh al-Arouri, who vowed that Israeli forces would face "ambushes" if they tried to storm the camp and that fighters should attempt to capture IDF soldiers.
Islamic Jihad and its military wing, Al-Quds Brigades, also issued a number of statements Monday claiming its fighters and other resistance factions injured IDF personnel, and damaged Israeli vehicles and drones, as well.
Another independent yet increasingly active faction based in the West Bank city of Nablus and known as the Lion's Den, also said in a statement Monday that it had operatives in Jenin actively fighting against Israeli troops.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is just one front in the tense feud playing out between Iran and Israel across the Middle East.

Tehran's support for regional militias, increasingly advanced missile arsenal and its nuclear program—which Iranian officials have always denied was intended to produce a bomb—has also riled Arab countries, some of whom have moved to overcome existing feuds over the Palestinian issue to establish relations with Israel. More recently, however, Iran has begun rebuilding ties in the region, including with Saudi Arabia as part of a China-brokered deal in March, while condemnation has grown for right-wing policies pursued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration.
While President Joe Biden's administration has also occasionally criticized policies pursued by the Netanyahu administration, the U.S. has also repeatedly affirmed its commitment to the security of Israel, which is widely believed to possess a nuclear arsenal of its own.

Following a meeting last Wednesday with Israeli Defense Ministry Political-Military Director Dror Shalom, U.S. Under Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl "reaffirmed the strategic partnership between the United States and Israel, and underscored the U.S. commitment to deepening cooperation to address regional threats," including those related to Iran, according to the Pentagon.
"The officials discussed a series of ongoing efforts to address Iran's dangerous nuclear advances," the Pentagon readout stated, "and the shared U.S. and Israeli commitment to countering Iran's destabilizing activities across the region and beyond."
This is a developing news story. More information will be added as it becomes available.

Israel-Palestinian violence: Eight casualties in 'Palestinian car-ramming and stabbing attack' in Tel Aviv

At least eight casualties have been reported in what is believed to be a car-ramming and stabbing attack by Palestinians at a crowded bus stop in Israel.
There was at least one stabbing victim and a suspected attacker had been "neutralised" by first responders in the attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.

A medic told a local radio station the 20-year-old suspect had been shot dead. At least three of those injured are said to be in a "serious" condition, according to local police.
Images and video from the scene showed a pick-up truck that had mounted a pavement near a mall and crashed into a crowded bus stop.
"[The suspect] proceeded to get out of the vehicle to stab civilians with a sharp object," police said.
Khaled Al-Batsh, a senior official from the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad movement praised the attack as "an initial and natural response of the resistance towards what is happening in Jenin".

Tel Aviv's police chief said the suspect in the attack was a Palestinian man from the West Bank. Hamas claimed the man was a member and the attack was retaliation for an Israeli raid on a refugee camp.

Israeli's internal security agency, the Shin Bet, said the man had no prior security record, while Yaakov Shabtai, the police chief, said that several people connected to the man were arrested, but did not provide details

A spokesperson for the Magen David Adom ambulance service said some of those injured had knife wounds.

Three children were among the 10 killed after the raid by Israeli forces on the refugee camp in the Palestinian city of Jenin, the UN humanitarian office has said.

The World Health Organisation said that first responders have been prevented from entering the camps to treat those who have been injured.

Thousands of people have fled the camp in the occupied West Bank after Israel launched its deadly military operation on Monday.

Dozens have been wounded in the operation which saw Israel carry out a wave of drone strikes and send in hundreds of troops.

Israeli troops were pressing ahead with their hunt for Palestinian militants and weapons on Tuesday, after military bulldozers tore through alleys.

Several cities in the West Bank have reportedly declared a general strike for Tuesday in solidarity with Palestinians in the Jenin camp, which had been home to around 14,000 people.

"We are alarmed at the scale of air and ground operations that are taking place in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, and airstrikes hitting a densely populated refugee camp," Vanessa Huguenin, a spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office, said.

Israel, US holding another joint air drill apparently focused on Iran

By Emanuel Fabian Today, 2:01 pm Edit

Exercises simulate strikes on ‘strategic targets in depth’ of enemy territory, include American tankers boosting range of IAF fighter jets

Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent.
The Israeli and American air forces on Sunday launched a joint drill, the latest in a series of exercises apparently aimed at readying the Israel Defense Forces for a potential strike in Iran.

In a statement Monday, the IDF said the drill, dubbed Juniper Oak, would include the Israeli Air Force carrying out airstrikes against “strategic targets in the depth,” an apparent reference to Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Additionally, the air drills would simulate “achieving aerial superiority in the region and cyber defense against a variety of threats,” the IDF said.
During the drill, IAF fighter jets were to refuel from an American Boeing KC-46, of which Israel has ordered four and is expected to receive the first in 2025.
For Israel, the KC-46 aircraft are seen as necessary to conduct potential major strikes against targets in Iran, some 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) from Israel and far outside the normal flight range of Israeli jets.

“The exercise continues and strengthens the operational cooperation between the militaries and takes place as part of the series of IDF exercises with the US Central Command,” the Israeli military said.
There was no immediate readout from the US CENTCOM on the drill.
Israel regularly conducts various training drills with the US military, including air force exercises and missile defense drills.
In January, the IDF and US Central Command held a major drill in Israel, also dubbed Juniper Oak, the largest-ever joint exercise held by the Israeli and American militaries.

All those nut cases are going to get people dead of heat stroke. Even at midnight it is going to be too hot for that kind of nonsense.
