Is It Too Late To Plant A Garden?

Now my garden is planted but I was thinking of new preppers who may be
looking at our forum for the first time. Let us say that Prepper A came
here after North Korea lauched the six missles yesterday.
He/she lives in Zone 5. Could Prepper A begin a garden and have
the time to harvest it? What vegetable plants would
you suggest?

I will start by suggesting Early Girl tomatoes.

Who will offer another suggestion?

Depending on your climate you could plant for a fall/winter garden. I'll give examples for the PNW. I'm a zone 8, very temperate but WET.

Kale, brussel sprouts, spinach, cress, radishes, annual and perennial herbs, kohlrabi, cabbage all come to mind. They all have either a short season or can be harvested well into the cold.

Onion and garlic are usually planted in the fall for harvesting the following year.
Jerusalem artichokes, strawberries, leeks, berry bushes could produce by the following year.

The main concerns would be to buy for your climate so you do not have to coddle them and to buy heirloom.

It takes very little to make a garden bed. My first year here, all I did was turn over the sod and add grass clippings and that's it. I had a good crop of green beans and zucchini.

Don't forget broccoli. Maybe time for winter squash like acorn, or butternut. I'm not sure how long the season is up there.

You are a little further north than we are, but you can still get a garden in and crops out. You may need to cover some things in the fall to keep frost off.

Potatoes are short season (only about 60 days), beans are good, peas later in Aug for the fall, tomatoes - only if you can find good sized plants, onion sets would still be good and grow well. Too late for most corn though.

Check the seed packages, you have about 75 growing days left and can push that a little with cover.
