Don't screw with an engineer
Well
Your parents were part of the great depression era or preppers
Or both
Yeah, my dad was Depression era. I always got him good socks for Christmas-several times when we visited, he would be sitting in his recliner darning old socks. He never kept a wad of cash, but some.

What I don't understand is why she "wasn't aware" of the law saying she had to notify her boss that she was having an affair with a person she was setting up work contracts with (Nathan). She said he was an agent. Does that mean independent contractor? She blew that off and didn't seem to be an issue. Is it an issue or not?

It is, but we are talking Fulton County Ga and such things are often ignored.

This^^^ My parents always had a little cash tucked away, and not in any checking account. They always had extra food because both knew what it was like to go days on end w/o anything to eat. I keep a well stocked pantry because I know that things can always blow apart.
Keeping a cash stash for emergencies is fine, actually wise. I do the same. But it is for EMERGENCIES. Not for paying off your boyfriend for a vacation. Only reason you use cash for that is to avoid the paper trail.
