ECON Is A Liquor Shortage Looming?

Yeah, but if you didn't have any wine at all, how much of a problem would it be for you?

Now how much would it be for the serious drinkers out there?

That's what I'm getting at, really.

the gov't better get on this one and PDQ!!! And I'm dead serious, cause a booze shortage will lead to a hot war faster than anyone could imagine. Over on the Aldi Nerd group women talk about their bottle a day wine habits and their six pack a day hard cider habits. Now imagine 100,000 karens out there without their daily wine or hard cider!?! Yeah it's going to get ugly and fast.

Off to buy more whiskey and wine.

I do love my cold beer too, though, but I don’t know how long canned beer, lasts without going stale? 6 months in a very cool basement?

About two years before the bubbles are gone, we keep ours in the basement. If you can store it in the fridge it'll last even longer.

So make yer ow. Storing things needed for that is a lot cheaper than storing enough bottles to keep you happy and, with a little research you can learn to make as good or nearly as you can buy.

Another type of “Self Fulfilling Prophecy“?
1. Spread the word of a shortage.
2. Everyone rushes out to the stores buying all the stock.

Thereby causing the shortage!

Just like the Ammo and Toilet Paper Shortages.

If ”they” can start a rumor and we react by causing the rumor to become true; causing lots of people worry and grief, then “they” have succeeded yet again!

John Carson created the first TP shortage in 1973 with an off hand remark.

Obama help to create the first ammo shortage which resulted in the shortages seen during Trump's Presidency into and has continued in joe's what ever he is doing, but ammo starting to reappear.

Is A Liquor Shortage Looming?

Alcohol sales rose dramatically during the coronavirus pandemic as some relieved stress with an adult beverage. But now, that could change as liquor shortages are metastasizing across parts of the U.S.

Internet searches for "liquor shortage" have exploded to record highs this summer, especially in states like Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, and Ohio.

According to local news reports in several states, liquor shortages are developing and leaving shelves bare.

"Broadly speaking, there have been strains on the global supply chains of a variety of products throughout the entire pandemic, and not just here," North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission spokesperson Austin McCall told Salon. "The retail demand for spirituous liquor has remained high even as more bars and restaurants have opened in recent months, straining supply even further."

The consequences of the virus pandemic have resulted in more alcohol consumption in the U.S. So far, there's no indication on social media of panic buying. But as we've seen before, that can abruptly change.
Not this on top of everything else...

Thing is you can use liquor for many different things, not just getting drunk.

Even if you use it to barter with its useful in your preps.

Smokes, chew, liquor, mary jane. There will always be folks willing to barter what you need for these items. I have even entertained the idea of a small tobacco plot and you can roll the smoke in the tobacco leaves like a cigar I guess. rolling papers are made out of rice paper I believe and I have no idea how to make that.

Guess I have some research to do!

Tomatoes are susceptible to a disease called tobacco mosaic virus. Need to keep them way apart and wash hands very throughly before and after touching tobbaco plants.

Easier than you might think. A couple two-liter bottles and these

will do the job.

I don't drink myself, but I've tried it. The idea is amazing; fruit juice, sugar and yeast go into a 2-liter plastic bottle. Then you put one of those caps on and leave it to sit somewhere cool, dry and dark. Two weeks later, you have a 30-proof wine, and you can actually customize it from there.

The impurities will be an issue. Been there done that in my youth. Works just nowhere near as well as most would like.

Well,

A Rum-run is in order.
Won't have to fight too much in Chicago for Rum. Not a favorite here. Too bad for them, good for me!

BN, that method is crude at best. I made a Mead once using my beer making gear. It’s very expensive to make because the base for a 5 gallon batch is pure honey. About 10-15 lbs IIRC. That much honey is expensive. I flavored it with cinnamon and made it “bochet” style. It was a huge hit with everyone who tried it.

Ask anyone who's been without hooch for a month and see how crude they think it is. :D

It's the kind of thing literally anyone with access to fruit juice can do. Sure, maybe it's one step up from terlet sangria made in your finer prisons, but it's booze.

Where I live in Idaho there is a Vodka distillery plus there are lots of potatoes and there are several breweries. The local farmers grow barley for Budweiser I don't think there will be a liqueur shortage.

It wouldn't affect us that much, but I do like to have adult beverages around the holidays.

Dennis, I have to confess that I'm consumed by curiosity about something. You are Mormon, and my understanding is that alcoholic beverages are forbidden.... but yet you make beer and mead. Can I ask why?

I don't speak for Dennis, but I know plenty o' drinking Mormons. They're called Jack Mormons, don't know why.

Make your own. Wine kits make it easy and affordable. $5-8 per bottle for quality that would be much more purchased.

In general terms - and for sane amounts - beer and wine making is legal. Distilling for hard liquor is illegal without a license.

With that out of the way, learn to make your own. Wine is the easiest alcoholic beverage to make at home and beer is not too much more difficult. Brandy is nothing more than distilled wine, and bourbon, scotch and Irish whisky is essentially a form of grain-based "beer" that is distilled. Vodka is usually distilled from a form of potato "wine". It's all a lot easier than you might suspect.

Beer, wine and liquor making are amongst the oldest of mankind's technologies and they are some of the easiest to do at home. There are no secrets left to the processes and everything is easy to research.

The minimum required supplies are yeast(s) and various types of sugar. There are specialized yeasts for alcohol production - which can improve taste and output - but you can get by just fine by starting with plain old baker's yeast. The same is true of sugars. There are specialty sugars out there, but regular, cheap cane sugar will get you started.

Like everything in the prep world, do your research and get your supplies before the time of need.

I rarely drink liquor. But when I do it's usually Glenfiddich, or Jagermeister.
Speaking of shortages, I actually sometimes miss living in Nevada with their 24/7 drive through liquor stores. So convenient when you are drunk and need another bottle. LOL.

I've made some fairly decent drinkable wine over the years from frozen Welch's grape juice (you can do a white or a red!!) and Amazon champagne yeast (if you want to get fancy, add some oak to the jugs of red), but it ain't my drink of choice.

Okay, we made a quick trip to Ankeny (Iowa) to the Sam's Club there and stocked up on some of my favorite flavors of brown water. HUGE holes in the expensive stuff, the rot gut stuff was still pretty well stocked. I decided to do this after the trip to our local Sam's Club here in town yesterday that looked like a frat house had it the place. I assumed that this was because it was move in/move out day, university town, and people were either partying or letting off some steam. And then came across this thread this morning. We stopped at HyVee to stock up on our favorite wines. I'll be looking for beer sales, of our favorite flavors, to replenish that stock as well. He went into HyVee, so I have no idea how low their stocks are at the moment.

Oh, and apparently the mexicans have heard about the liquor shortage only the really expensive stuff was available and I wasn't the only one looking for tequila. I noticed it yesterday but didn't think anything about it until this afternoon, good googly no tequila! Oh and vodka was close to non-existant as well, unless you wanted the really expensive stuff, none of the stuff use for making tinctures.

Yes, but if you buy a wine juice kit, it will actually taste GOOD! I've made a bunch of wine over the years... "country" wines (just fruit, with maybe some yeast nutrient and acid balancer) CAN be good, or they can be barely drinkable. If you are drinking solely for the alcohol content, you won't care. But if you generally like commercial wines, do yourself a favor and buy a wine juice kit and follow the instructions.

I made 5 gallons each of Liebfraumilch (a white German wine) and Strawberry Zinfendel, to serve at our youngest son's wedding. It was the only wedding where I've seen people walking out with a bottle of wine under each arm! We kept a couple bottles of the Liebfraumilch back in the cellar, and opened them with DS and DDIL on their 10th anniversary. It was *amazing*!

Got a link to those "wine juice kits"? I don't drink myself, but I know it makes a fine trade good.

guess you must be one of the younger ones here, klinton 94 assault weapons ban also caused a huge shortage, that lasted almost the whole 10 years of the ban . what made that shortage bad was there wasnt internet to buy from, , and at that time buying bulk wasnt as big a deal.
