Thane: 500 call centre employees detained for duping US citizens

The raid was carried out by over 200 police personnel, mostly from the Crime Branch, late Tuesday night

In a major raid, over 500 employees of some call centres were detained for allegedly threatening the US citizens and siphoning off their money in Mira Road area of Thane, police said on Wednesday.

The raid was carried out by over 200 police personnel, mostly from the Crime Branch, late Tuesday night and continued in the wee hours on Wednesday, they said.

The persons operated from call centres in Mira Road locality, which comes under the jurisdiction of Thane Rural Police, and posed as officials of US Tax Department, which is equivalent to the Income Tax Department in India, police said.
They would call up the US citizens and demand their financial and bank details, failing which they would allegedly threaten them with dire consequences, including legal action.

After obtaining the requisite details from the American citizens, these call centre employees would siphon off money from their accounts, police said, adding daily turnover of such dealings was estimated to be over Rs 1 crore.
Based on complaints received of these activities , police kept a tab on the call centre employees and subsequently raided their premises late Tuesday night.
The process of registering offence in the matter was on, police said. Further details of the racket were awaited.

So glad to see these people get raided, particularly after what happened to a member here a while back. I have a feeling that there's more than one criminal group behind these calls though. (a bunch of independent groups with the same cookie cutter scam)

Perhaps this action will put the others on notice to stop their criminal shenanigans. Throw the book at them and make an example of them.

They are lucky they were not identified by some rich philanthropist who decided to close their shop permanently with walls of fire at every entrance/exit during fully loaded hours.

They called me several times but I actually quite profane with them. ROTFLMAO I called the IRS about them and got the run around. I even called the number they listed on their message. The person didn't sound Indian to me, and I've dealt with a lot of Indian call centers.

This went on for several years, resulted in the bad guys making tens of millions of dollars. It was $35 million when the IRS guy told me.

I am unimpressed with India, or the IRS. This story today really means "the Indian government" allowed a call center to operate from their country for 3 to 5 years, and make tens of millions of dollars by abusing, threatening and bullying American citizens, especially senior citizens.

And they want kudos for finally doing what should have been done several years ago?
Naw, what really happened is enough people like me finally complained and got the Feds invovled, or whatever.

I would take these people out and shoot them no problem. Trump is scaring the people overseas. The Indians decided they needed to get this elder abuse off the table before Trump got a hold of hit.
We need to shut down ALL INDIAN CALL CENTERS IMMEDIATELY.

Still, who could be so stupid as to take this scam seriously?

No one has ever gone broke underestimating the stupidity of the public. There are people out there right now who genuinely believed that Apple had somehow forgotten to make sure the hole for the headphone jack on their new iPhone was drilled, and so did it themselves (thus destroying their new phone). Per the OP article, this scam had been going for a couple of years. They wouldn't have kept it up if they hadn't been able to find marks to sucker.

I just got a call from the NRA looking for money. I told them I'm well aware of what's happening rather than take their "did you know test" on the candidates. I suggested the phone guy stock a deep pantry, things are going to get very real one of the days.... second one like that. I just flip the conversation, they are usually quite stunned.

I have had a call from these scamers and so has my Husband. They are very convincing with the conversations they portray to you an NO i did not fall for it but i could see how others may have and being stupid has nothing to do with it They also spoof their numbers on the line coming into your phone caller id, and it does show up as IRS washington dc and etc.

Good decent people (often older) who have morals and are without a BS Detector or hint of crooked DNA are taken by surprise by these sheisters, that's who. "Square" people who subscribe to the Social Contract and expect others do, too.

Remember a couple years ago when the SO of one of our members killed himself and his dog over it?

That was a particularly sad case, Dennis. As a result of that horror being discussed, here, a lot of people on down the email chains were forewarned and able to resist when they were the target.

Those crooks that got busted should be held accountable for the misery and death they caused.

One of the smartest, street-smart, older gals I know was suckered by the Grandchild Calls From A Foreign Jail Scam. Thank God the young woman working at the local Western Union Office suspected the scam and helped her, and the local police, put a stop to those calls.

In the Grandchild scam, grandparents are especially susceptible because they may have hearing issues which compound their ability to discriminate voices of grand kids they may not even get to to see/know very well. Although the gal above worked for MA BELL dealing with phone fraud and wrote company practices for dealing with exactly this kind of scam, the fraudsters can be quite sophisticated.

We've actually been audited by the IRS and had them demand money up front that they didn't deserve, so these Indian frauds don't scare me. But if you'd cheated a little, I can see how guilt might make you jumpy and not discerning enough.

Here in central Texas the police depts have posted on their facebook pages a warning that now the IRS scammers are sending notices in the snail mail, the letter looks very official and for the naive it would be scary. City of Live Oak Texas has it on their FB page has a copy of the fake IRS notice

Elderly folks that don't get daily internet news nor have any younger family members to look out for them. I've seen it happen and I place absolutely no blame on the victims.

If the vermin that do this were publicly executed, this sort of crap would stop or at least be greatly reduced overnight.
