Jerusalem reeling in wake of attack
Ten people are dead and over 180 wounded as the toll in the wake of a triple terror attack in Jerusalem continued to rise throughout the night.
110 people are hospitalized at area hospitals.
Seventeen are listed in serious to very serious condition at all three Jerusalem hospitals, 22 sustained moderate wounds and dozens of others sufferered from more minor wounds, Israel Radio reports at this hour.
Many of the seriously wounded are suffering from head wounds, according to Dr. Shmuel Shapira, director of Hadassah-University Hospital, Ein Kerem.
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said it was "one of the worst (attacks) we have ever seen."
Peres will convene a session of the security cabinet at 10:00.
Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer wil also assess the situation at a meeting at the Defense Ministry today.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will cut short his trip to the US, returning to Israel after his meeting with President George W. Bush at 19:00 Israel time.
US envoy Anthony Zinni has cancelled all scheduled meeting this morning and is consulting with Administration officials as to further steps in the region, Army Radio said.
In a statement issued last night, the Palestinian Authority condemned the terror attacks, expressing its "deep anger ... and pain" and accusing those behind it of trying to derail a US peace initiative.
"This is a great catastrophe. There are many, many casualties," said Health Minister Nissim Dahan, who was touring area hospitals. "We are almost at the limit of our capacity to take in the wounded."
Dahan recommended that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon not cut short his visit to the US, and continue with planned meetings with President George W. Bush and other Administration leaders.
Two suicide bombers blew themselves up at two locations on the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall shortly before 11:45 last night.
Shortly thereafter a car bomb blew up in an alley near the scene of the first two blasts as rescue crews were arriving on the scene.
Several mortar shells were hidden in the vehicle.
No group has officially taken responsibility for the attacks.
However, a Hamas radio station in Palestinian Authority controlled areas is broadcasting joyous music and congratulating those who carried out the attack, Israel Channel One television said.
The blasts were so powerful that they shattered the windows of cars parked a block away.
Blood was splattered across store fronts, and bits of flesh and metal bolts from the explosives were strewn on the ground.
Patrons of cafes huddled indoors, behind closed doors. A young man and woman sitting in the corner of one cafe held on to each other. Teen-age girls and boys were screaming and crying into mobile phones, talking to their parents, trying to find their friends in the chaos.
Shortly after the suicide bombings, an explosion went off in a car parked near the mall, said Police Chief Mickey Levy. Apparently no one was hurt in that explosion. At the sound of the third explosion, pedestrians ran up the street in a panic.
The Ben Yehuda mall is usually packed with young Israelis on Saturday evening. The mall has been the target of suicide attacks in the past, including in 1997.
Just up the block, on the corner of King George and Jaffa streets, a suicide bomber blew himself up last summer in a crowded pizzeria, killing himself and 15 diners.
Abdel Aziz Rantisi, a Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, did not claim responsibility on behalf of the group, but said Hamas would continue carrying out attacks.
"We have said several times that we are not going to accept the occupation to remain in our land," Rantisi said. "We are fighting Jewish terrorism, we are fighting the killers and defending our freedom, our stability and our dignity."
IDF forces have tightened the closure around Tulkarm, Nablus and Jenin, Army Radio said.
