Exotics Indoor Orchid Windowsill Garden

A few years ago a friend gave me a white orchid. I was surprisedby how easy care for it was- water once a week by filling up the outer pot, drain after half an hour. Every other week it is fed with a weak orchid food in the water, same method, and it blooms and blooms. Another friend moved away and left a shriveled and sorry looking orchid behind- by treatiing it the same as my other one, it is now blooming regularly too - orange. Yet another person saw me looking at orchids at the grocery store and gave me a pink one- you can see where this is going!
Now I have a total of five- white, orange, pink, lemon yellow, and lavendar spotted, and they go nicely with my one purple and white ruffled African violet. They all bloom and bloom, literally for months on end. Take up two windowsills, but are the best for cheering me up in some of the dreary weather here.

How beautiful!

My daughter just gave me a white orchid for my birthday last week. It's at least 2 feet tall, and the flowers are huge. I'm hoping I can keep it alive!

My 2 year old granddaughter kept looking at it the other day, and finally asked, "grandma, is that a real flower?" I didn't realize she knew what artificial flowers were, but she's got a point! It does look almost like porcelain!

Ok...me and my Black thumb wanna know more specifics. What direction is your windowsill facing?

Are you using a fertilizer like "Jack's Classic Orchid" which is a 7-5-6 fertilizer?

And what is the room temperature range throughout 24 hours? After 2years I have buds!OrchidBuds.jpg

Dear Loretta- That is a great looking orchid! my usual indoor temp here is 67 degrees F. i just use a standard orchid/african violet feed of 1-3-1.
Once your orchid blooms, don't cut off the flower stem. if your orchid is the right kind, it will put out more flowers on the same stem. I used to think orchids were too special and I couldn't grow them for some reason, but it looks like you are having the same good success I did- and what a pleasant surprise!
Regarding light, mine face SE, but, as you can see, a lot of the sunlight is blocked by big trees. I have mine on the windowsill only b/c my part of the house is so small. They don't need much direct sunshine, if any, altho there are many many kinds, and some may differ.
