Emergency Essentials Store
After an emergency, especially after flooding, drinking water may not be available or safe to drink for personal use. Do not use water you suspect or have been told is contaminated to wash dishes, brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, make ice, or make baby formula.

Make Water Safe
Water often can be made safe to drink by boiling, adding disinfectants, or filtering.
IMPORTANT: Water contaminated with fuel or toxic chemicals will not be made safe by boiling or disinfection. Use a different source of water if you know or suspect that water might be contaminated with fuel or toxic chemicals.

Boiling

If you don’t have safe bottled water, you should boil water to make it safe. Boiling is the surest method to make water safer to drink by killing disease-causing organisms, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

Disinfectants

If you don’t have clean, safe, bottled water and if boiling is not possible, you often can make water safer to drink by using a disinfectant, such as unscented household chlorine bleach, iodine, or chlorine dioxide tablets.

Filters

Many portable water filters can remove disease-causing parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardiafrom drinking water. If you are choosing a portable water filter, try to pick one that has a filter pore size small enough to remove both bacteria and parasites. Look for a filter that has a pore size of 1 micron or less. This will remove microbes 1 micron or greater in diameter (Cryptosporidium, Giardia).

You can take up a plumbing project and buy some 3/8 cold rolled copper tubing and some proper filters meant for the home but will do for the job.
The filters all have a micron rating and to start you want a 5 to 1 micron filter then you want in line with that a lead filter the lead filter will filter down to remove all harmful microbes and next in line you want to put a charcoal filter and it will help clear up the water and remove the odors and you may want to find some kine of barrel to tank you have so you can pour the water into it and let it gravity feed into the filters and have something at the other end to collect the clean water.

This setup will process 5 gallons of water in a 20 minutes.

I'd like to buy (or..(sigh) BUILD) a reliable solar still for long-haul treatment of suspect water.
I have access to a low flow creek, with "pretty clear" water … little discoloration or apparent solids, but it would certainly need further purification, such as with a solar still. I'd appreciate any references to commercial or home-built solar or electric (12V ??) stills. Huge flow rates are not a big concern…2-5 gallons a day should be enough. I plan to install a roof catchment system for utility water in barrels. Drinking water is the needed part. TYVM
