...for supper tonight! First ones this year. Yum... can hardly wait. Everybody chime in and tell us what goodies are going on your table tonight!!! I don't know what else I'm having-- haven't got that far yet. I didn't have room for corn this year but I would love to have fresh corn on the cob or fresh green beans. I also can't wait to make green tomato kraut. Pretty soon all of us canners will be hard at work putting up tomatoes and beans and everything else we can think of! Well, I'm rambling so I'm going to go cook...Kat :D

I'm having fresh green beans AGAIN tonight :D I had my first ones earlier this week.

Been having fresh squash and cukes for several weeks now.... getting to the point that I am giving away lots of those.

I am looking forward now, to the first tomatoes.... my plants don't even have blossoms yet!

Been eating corn, green beans, tomatoes and blackberries for a couple weeks now. We put our garden in early and got lucky this year. We have already harvested 10 gallons of blackberries from 1 bush!

When did you put your tomato plants in? And further more, what are you feeding them?!?

Also (while I'm asking questions) what types of plants did you use? I'm south of you and have been perplexed with the plants that I've gotten in recent years as they've not given fruit through out the summer, just whack it all comes in and they're done. I don't know that I've done better this year. I believe I planted Better Boys (first time for me) and they're putting out fruit left and right. I think that I'll be left high and dry again in the near future. My selection was limited to Wal-Mart as I didn't plant my own seed. I direct sowed one year and really couldn't tell a difference as far as growth/production rates from the Wal-Mart plants. I think that next year (unless these plants fool me) I'll get out the old Tomato Grower's Cataloge and buy from there again. It's a little more fun if you enjoy the "experiment" of gardening.

Any suggestions are welcome. I "compete" with my grandmother every year for the "first ripe tomato". I usually win that because she lives in N. AL, but she almost ALWAYS has the more tasty tomatoes... Last year she fought squirrels and they won. She was not a happy camper. I was pretty unhappy also as it wrecked the competition! Any advice about fending these creatures off would be appreciated also. Thanks!!

OMG!!!! Slipperyslope-- 10 GALLONS from one bush???
You have got to tell me what kind of bushes those are that you're growing. We are having such bad luck with my mothers berries this year its just been a total loss. I'm trying to get her to invest in a different type next year. Also trying to help her improve her soil before next year as I'm sure that is part of the problem. But still,,,, 10 gallons is something else. I hope you read this and get back to me on which type you have. Kat

I have never had fried green tomatoes either - I will have to try them this year, as soon as my plants decide to make some!

Usually, when I have a lot of green tomatoes in the fall, right before the first freeze, I make green tomatoe relish, and pickles.

briches and blueberry,

Slice them kinda thin and dredge in flour or cornmeal- your preference!! Try to use kinds with a lot of acid as they taste the best. You want them tart or they aren't much good. Some folks dip them in a batter, I've never had them that way but it sounds good too. Fry till nice and brown and somewhat crispy. Let us know what you think after you try them! :D
