CHICAGO — A second confirmed case of measles has been reported at a shelter for migrants in Pilsen, the Chicago Department of Public Health said on Sunday.

According to CDPH, there has been an increase in measles cases worldwide in recent months due to lower vaccination coverage.

Measles, a highly contagious respiratory infection, can cause a rash and high fever. It can lead to pneumonia and other complications.

The two cases at the shelter are among young children, CDPH said. The first child who was infected has since recovered and the second child is hospitalized in good condition.

The Chicago Department of Public Health is reiterating the importance of getting vaccinated and working with its partners at the migrant shelter to screen residents for symptoms and get them vaccinated.

Child with measles is second confirmed case in city since 2019: CDPH

Those partners include Cook County Health, RUSH University Medical Center, University of Illinois – Chicago and a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Olsimbo Ige, the commissioner of the CDPH, said more cases are anticipated because of how contagious the virus is.

Those who have been exposed to someone who has measles should quarantine and call a health provider.

Residents at the Pilsen shelter who have been previously vaccinated are able to come and go from the shelter. Those who have not been vaccinated or were vaccinated in recent days will need to quarantine for 21 days.

Can you get measles as an adult? What to know amid uptick in cases

“We have advised all unvaccinated and newly vaccinated residents of the quarantine period but some of those residents have left the shelter, and I want to acknowledge that,” Ige said. “That is why we so strongly advise the unvaccinated to get the vaccine and to immediately quarantine if you have had contact with anyone with measles.”

The Department of Family and Support Services has secured more meal services for those who have to quarantine at the shelter.

More information about the measles virus and vaccinations can be viewed online from the CDPH.

Last week, a Chicagoan was diagnosed with measles for the first time since 2019.

God has a plan, Trust it!
Yes you can get it as an adult, however in the US, all children are immunized for it, so it hasnt been widespread in the US in decades. Fewer than 1000 people get it in the US every year, most of them unvaccinated. However, if you have not had the second booster (usually around 12 yrs old), the benefits of the vaccine may have waned.

The reasons why it is going around the immigrants is because they are not usually vaccinated against it, children or adults.

Mexico has a very good vaccination system. They even come to your home with little coolers to make sure. Other latin countries..not so much.
I lived in Pilsen in Chicago...large Latino community there.

One Kid May Have Exposed Up to 300 People to Measles at UC Davis Medical Center In Sacramento

We probably have the anti-vaxxers to thank for this one, as a potential measles outbreak could be on the horizon in Sacramento after an unnamed child exposed as many as 300 people to the virus.

Even though the virus measles was declared eliminated back in the year 2000, we are currently seeing measles outbreaks in Florida and Chicago, while as of Monday morning, measles cases have been confirmed in 17 US states. And California is now one of them, as CNN reports that a child with measles may have exposed up to 300 people at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

“Sacramento County Public Health (SCPH) confirms one case of measles in a child who was seen at the UC Davis Medical Center Emergency Department on March 5, 2024, between 12 pm and 5 pm,” according to an official Sacramento County release. “UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento County Public Health (SCPH) and Public Health and Health Departments in surrounding counties are contacting identified patients to assess their immunization status and provide guidance to individuals who were exposed.”

While measles is known for producing red rashes on the skin, it’s a highly contagious respiratory virus that can live in the air for an hour. Measles can also produce symptoms like a cough, a runny nose, and red or watery eyes, and occasionally diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. A measles infection can be fatal.

Wearing a mask can prevent the spread of measles, but simply having the measles vaccination is the best protection.

The increase in anti-vaccine sentiment across the country has led to the largest ever number of vaccine exemptions for children, according to the CDC. That organization also notes that 92% of US children have gotten the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, though that national target is 95%.

“Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000 but is still the most easily transmitted human virus presently in circulation,” Association of State and Territorial Health Officials chief medical officer Dr. Marcus Plescia said in a statement to CNN. “Thankfully, by following established public health principles, Americans can make informed decisions, prevent outbreaks, and protect our communities. Vaccination is the best and safest way to protect children.”

If you’re not immunized or want a booster, the SF Department of Public Health has a list of recommended places to get immunized in San Francisco.

California Hospital Searching For 300 People Exposed to Measles From A Child

Sacramento, California, US

A hospital in California is trying to contact about 300 people who were possibly exposed to measles.

A child had visited the emergency department of the UC Davis Health hospital in Sacramento to seek treatment for the contagious viral illness last week after returning from international travel.

UC Davis Health said it “has the situation under control” and said that it has begun contacting about 300 in the facility who may have been exposed.

“There are no additional potential exposures at UC Davis Medical Center beyond those people who have been identified and contacted. UC Davis has a record of each patient and employee in the Emergency Department that day, and notifications about potential exposure are being sent through phone calls, the electronic medical record’s online messaging portal, letters, in person, and to the care teams of patients who were admitted from the Emergency Department during the time period,” the authorities at the hospital said in a news release.

“Those who are at risk of exposure are being contacted by Infection Prevention, and care teams who are managing current inpatients are being advised of the need for proper infection prevention processes,” the news release further added.

It asked people at risk to review their immunisation records, contact their health provider and monitor themselves for illness.

Measles is a highly contagious disease and it can lead to complications and turn deadly. The disease usually begins with a mild to moderate fever, along with a cough, runny nose, and red/watery eyes. Some patients suffer from diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. They also get red rashes first on the face which rapidly spreads to the chest, back, thighs and feet.

El Dorado County warns of possible measles exposure

News NEWS | Mar 9, 2024

Submitted to the Tribune
On March 5 a child with a confirmed case of measles was seen in the Emergency Department at UC Davis after being evaluated at San Joaquin Urgent Care. According to estimations approximately 300 people may have been exposed during the that time. Counties of residence for the individuals include El Dorado County.

This notification is to provide clear instructions so that appropriate protective measures can be taken for anyone at risk. If you were in the UC Davis ED on March 5 between 12-5 p.m., please contact The El Dorado County Public Health line at:
Placerville (530) 621-6320
South Lake Tahoe (530) 573-3154

“We will be receiving a list of those who were confirmed at the UC Davis Emergency Department at that time and will be contacting those individuals for further instructions,” said Dr. Matthew Minson, El Dorado County’s Public Health Officer.

“Please do not go directly to the emergency Department as that could increase spread and put others at risk,” he added.

Measles is a serious illness especially for the very young, pregnant individuals, and immunocompromised people. It can be prevented with vaccination. If you suspect you or someone you know has measles, early evaluation is critical.

Two more measles cases identified at Pilsen migrant shelter

The newest cases were both in adults at the shelter. The city’s total number of cases is up to five, the city health department says. More than 900 residents of the shelter were vaccinated over the weekend and are being quarantined for 21 days.

Two more cases of measles were identified Sunday in a Pilsen migrant shelter. This follows the two cases diagnosed last week, according to city health officials.

The newest cases were both in adults at the shelter and brings the city’s total number of cases to five.

Two cases were previously found in children at the shelter, and another case was identified in a person outside the shelter Feb. 27, the city's first case since 2019. The Pilsen facility is the same shelter where one boy died and several other children were hospitalized after becoming sick in December.

“Because some Chicagoans on the whole are unvaccinated, there remains an opportunity for the virus to spread,” city health officials said in a Monday statement. “CDPH is, therefore, treating this response as a citywide one and is calling on all eligible unvaccinated residents to get vaccinated now.”

RELATED
More than 900 residents of the shelter were vaccinated over the weekend and are being quarantined for 21 days, city health officials said. Another 700 at the shelter already had immunity and have been allowed to leave the shelter and return.

Dozens of residents of the shelter who had immunity from vaccines or prior infection were moved to another location Sunday to quarantine, city health officials said. Others at the shelter are also being moved into hotels to quarantine.

The city health department is now vaccinating anyone without immunity at the new arrival landing zone and sending staff to other shelters to continue to vaccinate people, city health officials said.

Initial symptoms — such as high fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes — usually appear within a week or two of exposure to the virus, according to the CDC. The rash shows up three to five days after initial symptoms begin.

The "highly infectious" virus is spread through coughing, sneezing or contact with an infected person, and the virus can live for up to two hours in the air after an infected person has left, according to the CDC. Those with the virus can spread it up to four days before and after a rash appears, and 90% of people without immunity who are exposed to the virus become infected.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention team is being sent to assist the city in responding to the infections.

“As long as measles circulates in Chicago, we will continue to take a proactive approach to protecting as many people as we can from this highly infectious disease,” said CDPH Commissioner Dr. Olusimbo Ige. “Vaccination remains by far the most effective way to prevent the spread of measles. New arrivals and all Chicagoans should get the MMR vaccine if they haven’t already.”

I know people roll their eyes about measles but remember, a pregnant woman exposed to measles (perhaps because the vax lost its potency after childhood MMR) could very well give birth to a profoundly deaf child. There are other complications as well.

My father had a brother that died before my dad was born that was killed by measles. This would have been in 1941. It isn't necessarily anything to pooh-pooh. Measles can be deadly even with the assistance of modern medicine.

And let's not forget about that strain at the horse farm in Australia that killed the wrangler who caught it along with a couple of horses back in December 1995.

ESFP adrift in INTJ sea
My best Doc friend ran a PICU and he was a HUGE vax proponent for what I (and most everybody just referred to as "all the normal childhood diseases") had 3 slides in a lecture he used to do about his PICU, that showed a 4 yr old kid dressed for her B-day party on a Friday in summer. 2nd shot was her by Monday, with more tubes than spaces for them as he was literally fighting for her life, 3rd slide was 2 months later and the child had JUST re-learned to walk.

Yeah, "normal childhood diseases", only as a Boomer.......

in Chicago it's only measles - BAD ENOUGH >>> but the Border Patrol is finding African criminals released from prison and flown into North America - can only begin to imagine what diseases they could carry .....

It would not be consistent with Biden's (Obama's) playbook to associate any viral outbreak with his current policy of importing voters.

I guess his administration has not factored in the voters they are killing off.

Maybe their intentions are a bit more complex, and nefarious.

Anti-vaxxers my fat, fuzzy butt!! Hold on to you hats, folks. We're going to see diseases on a scale not seen in MANY years.

what is a worry in Chicago is the spread into the general population around the shelter >>> that particular shelter is in the Hispanic area loaded with decades & decades of unvaccinated illegals - the kids might have been vaxed for public school admittance - but that is even a 50-50 deal - doubtful if any of the adults are vaxed ......

with the good weather the shelter illegals are allll pushing out FAST - trying to get something going >>> the shelters are being axed and any leftovers dumped back on the street

Prolly pictured in the MEEDIA as a "New Variant of Measles - likely to be fatal even among those previously infected/recovered/inoculated."

Just in time to cancel the election or at least require mail-in or online voting.

Insert Rahm Emanuel quote here. "Never let a crisis..." And the Dobbin addenda: "If you don't have one you create one."

And the Dobbin addenda2 "If you can't create one, you pretend there is one."

They do need to get in there and get vaccinating or all the anti- vaccinators for childhood diseases are going to suddenly find themselves and their kids very sick. People forget Helen Keller ended up deaf and blind because of measles and polio is very scary.

Saved, to glorify God.
Since they are encouraging people to get a measels shot, I thought I'd check to see if the measles shot had been
changed to a mrna vaccination.
I haven't found THAT information,
But they are AGGRESSIVELY pursuing research to merging the measles vaccine with SARS/COVID spike protein!
This research report is too long to post but it tells all about it. Read conclusions at the bottom, and anything you CAN understand.
I couldn't determine if they intend to use this as a COVID vaccine or as combination measles/covid shot.
