If you suddenly thought maybe TSHHTF, what would you do?

I had a few moments of heart palpatations yesterday, thinking we were in a SHTF moment and I didn't have a clue what had happened!

Here's how it came down:
We have a once a month coop delivery that requires me to drive from the Tulsa area to Oklahoma City in the AM. I then spend several hours sorting orders, load up the Tulsa area orders and drive back. Because I loose my normal stations 1/2 way to "The City", as it's known in Oklahoma ;) , I had my IPOD plugged into the car stereo.

Having been without news all day (and worse yet, no TB2K!!) I pulled off at 122nd and I-35 go get a cold drink at Sonic. I immediately noticed that cars were lined up to buy gas at both stations at the intersection. I was amazed at the number of cars lined up and was really starting to wonder what was going on. However, the heart palpatations came when I was trying to leave Sonic to pull back out on the road. The drive was blocked for more than five minutes and in the three or four minutes I'd been in Sonic, the gas lines had grown from being contained on the parking lots to now being several blocks in all directions.

I instantly jumped to the conclusion that TSHHTF. The bad news was, a) I didn't yet know what had happened and b) I couldn't find a radio station carrying any news and c) I was about two hours from home. On the good news side, my pickup and trailer were filled with about 30+ ice chests full of food.... really really good food.

What would you do at this point?? How do you determine what happened? What are your first steps? (My first step was to check my gas gauage. Second was check my ammo.)

As it turned out, nothing big had happened other than the two stations seemed to have dropped their gas prices about a dime below the pervailing market price in the area... so they were having their own mini-gas war. But I had about two hours to drive home and think about what I'd have done if it was a REAL SHTF scenario.

There are some wonderful preppers on this board. I'd love to hear what you'd have done in my shoes or a similar scenario.

Glad everything turned out ok.

What to do? ALWAYS carry a NOAA radio. You will get emergency broadcasts virtually anywhere. Make sure it has SAME coding so you can exclude notifications out of your area.

Me, too. It was a heart-stopper for a few moments, though! ;)

Good advice, and something I don't yet have!

Oh... and Army Ranger, I'm not a guy, I'm a gal. But I'll take your compliment anyway.

This is something I have never been able to figure out! You said the 2 stations dropped their prices by a dime and yet long long lines of cars were forming.

For an empty 20 gal. tank they would save the huge amount of $2.00 !! 'Nuff said:lol:

I'm very uneasy being away from a news source for more than say four hours at a time. I think it's a natural effect of the watchful, waitful state.

I know the feeling. Early 1973 I had been backpacking in a wilderness area for a week. Got into town looking pretty shaggy turned on the radio to discover the US was bugging out of Vietnam. Later on TV watched them push perfectly good helicopters off ship decks into the ocean cause they couldn't refuel them fast enough and they were taking up space needed to land more choppers and offload evacuees. Swore I'd never be out of radio communication again.

Get an XM radio. It's satellite-based, so you get the same stations all over the US. CNN, MSNBC and FoxNews are among the stations offered. Then you'll know if TSHTF...

Karnie, I usually listen to 72.4 AM from Tulsa on my way to work in the morning and pick it up better than the KTOK 1000 AM in OKC. Both of these channels are
FOX talk news channels. When I go to Tulsa I haven't had any trouble picking up
either one of these. Otherwise unless it's really BIG News most the the other
stations in OKC which are music I get very little news except a burb at the top
of the hour.

Annie, I know what you mean. If I'm away from any news for any length of time I get very nervous. When I'm riding with DH he has to listen to music and if we are
driving very far I have to switch the radio at least to make sure everything is
okay. We've had the worst radio connection for news when we go out into
western Oklahoma.

As casually as i could, i'd have inquired of the first carhop something like, "so, what's that all about?" while i nodded toward the growing line of cars . . . If she couldn't tell me, i'd have gotten out of my truck, walked to the first car w/a gal behind the wheel, smiled disarmingly, and asked her "why" she was sitting in line.

The problem w/so many radio stations today is that they're computerized and nothing is live. It's really hard here - when there are tornadoes or large grass fires - to get any live reports.

In addition to the radio, is there a subscription required to be able to listen to cnn, etc?

My dentist, who is also a musician, plays XM radio all day in his office. Nothing but music. Since he is too cheap to buy a second unit, he takes the one out of the office home with him when he leaves. I was talking to one of the girls in the office last week, and she said it drives them all crazy to be without news all day long except for what patients tell them when they come in. They all can't wait for him to leave and take his radio with him.

I got that long talk from her when I mentioned that the US had increased the attacks in Iraq the other day and she hadn't heard anything about it.
