A SIXTH-grade girl brought a gun to Rigby Middle School in Idaho and shot two students and a janitor before a teacher disarmed her.

The three people who were shot in the Thursday morning attack sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said the girl pulled a handgun from her backpack outside of the Idaho middle school and fired off several rounds.

She was disarmed by a female teacher and held until police arrived to take her into custody, cops said.

It's unclear at this time what the girl's motive was or how she got the gun.

Authorities have not released the girl's name but did say she is from nearby Idaho Falls.

Police were called to the scene on reports of shots fired around 9.15am.

The school district's superintendent Chad Martin called the day's events a "nightmare."

"Today we had the worst nightmare a school district could encounter. We had a school shooting here at Rigby Middle School," he said.

"What we know so far is the shooter has been apprehended. There is no further threat to the students."

He added that schools would be closed district-wide, but that counselors would be on hand for students who need them beginning Friday morning.

The adult who was shot was treated for a bullet wound at the hospital and released Thursday, Dr. Michael Lemon, trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, told reporters during a press conference.

He said the students who were shot were being held overnight at the hospital, and are both considered in fair condition.

One of the students may need surgery, he said.

So what the hell would push a 6th grader to pull something like this?
Who knows? Back in... 1971?... yeah youngest of a Catholic family of 7, seemingly happy and well loved 13 year old...

Pulled a pistol in the middle of 6th grade science and killed himself on the spot. The beloved teacher (in his late 60s at the time) never really got over it. As far as why... consensus seemed to be his 12 year old girlfriend had "jilted" him somehow. She was in the class when he did it.

Adolescence really is a time of temporary insanity. It's a wonder any of us survive it.

Have you ever lived in Idaho Falls?
Try living there while working night shift. The danged LDS ladies will bang on your door for what seems like an eternity.
And, no beer can be purchased on a holiday.
Errr...what does this have to do with the LDS?

Anyways: my kids school bus driver had a grandchild in the class. Waiting to hear more details.

Because the Mormon ladies would always want to visit and shower me with tracts and other information. I don't understand why.
I had to deal with finding copies of the Watchtower all the time at our gate while growing up. It's not that our dog didn't like the Jehovah's Witnesses personally, he just didn't like strangers.
If people would like to discuss religion, I prefer them not to loudly bang on my door as I'm attempting to sleep.

I guess you didn't get ****ed with constantly in school over your size, weight, a stutter or something else huh?

I understand what she *might* have been dealing with on a daily basis since first grade.

Plus [[in my case]] it was nearly daily beatings at home too.

Not saying what she did was good but I certainly understand some things that might have driven her.

Then again she might simply be a Snowflake from a Snowflake family and her feeling were hurt by Speech she hated. They seem to be on the more Mental side nowadays so shooting a "Nazi" might have been A-Ok! in her world.

I'm guessing the Janitor was simply someone that got in the way.

Middle school is, in general terms, a nightmare for nearly everybody. Some of the worst times of my life happened therein.

That's tough to deal with; I can only imagine. My dad always said I was so hard-headed I didn't ever think I was going to get a whooping until after I'd had my third one.

Could've simply been a "I've had enough" reaction to a mean girl thing, that's true. Just guessing but that's about all we can do at this point. Regardless of the temptation to assign simple answers to complex problems, I think a lot of it just plain boils down to demonic activity being more and more unleashed. That gets covered up with lots of psycho-illogical pudding but .. well, whatever.

Not that I have any specific personal knowledge (or that it has anything to do with this incident), but I've been told by people who live not far from there (Driggs, ID & Alpine, WY) that the country up there around Rexburg and points north is or has been pretty well-known for the chirrens in a family to have lots of mamas looking after them.

"Another student, Lucy Long, told the Post Register newspaper in Idaho Falls that her classroom went into lockdown after they heard gunshots, with lights and computers turned off and students lined up against the wall."

Oh, For f^ck's sake...

GREAT lockdown plan.

Because lined up against the wall is where you want to be when the firing squad walks in...

This country is done... Over... Kaput...

So you would rather them run out of the classroom and down the halls to be possibly shot? If your not going to face your aggressor it is better to lock the doors and place your backs to the inside wall so you do not present yourselves as targets? Think about what mall shootings do. Everyone that doesn't panic hides until the police come's and gets them.

Kristal Kennny was from the Idaho Falls areas. She drove down from there to Woodland Park Colorado to clean up the condo of a young lady who had been brutally beaten to death with a baseball bat by Patric Frazee. This was a couple of years back. Kristal was a nurse in Idaho Falls with lots of family and friends. There seemed to be prior knowledge of the killing among some of Kristals friends but nobody talked about it. Idaho Falls is not on my bucket list.
