Just got done moving my ammo to the new safe I got for my birthday. So I took the opportunity to count the rounds I have vs plans......not looking good....

9mm. Plan 1000. Actual. 550......Plan for 500 per gun / 2 guns
22. Plan 10,0000. Actual. 8100.....half CCI
223 / 556. Plan 2000 Actual 680.....50/50 mix

So here is hoping for good sales this year. I already have plans s for a Ruger Mark IV for the wife, slings, new rear sights and a red dot. It will be an expensive Christmas....

Aww, that's a cute stack. Nice start though.

I'm at the point that no matter how next Tuesday goes, I'll get a case of each cal before 2020, just to round us off and mags. But not .22LR. Lordy, lordy, I've got just enough of that stuff.

You may only have 2 years left, maybe, to really get stacked deep and cheap.

Do not forget a Volquartson trigger setup for your Mk 4. You will not be sorry at all. Out of the box trigger on the wife's was horrible.

I agree, but cash is always a limiting factor

Yup. It's why I stacked when I could, I knew my cash would be going away for awhile. You still have just under two years to get stuff done. Just don't wait until the last minute.

Actually 4, with the last being 20g. That one is more of a bird, pest gun.

We picked 3 main calibers to begin with and bought guns to match or built them as in the case of the AR15s. The idea being able to get ammo easily with common standard calibers. We both can load out with the same guns, cross load as needed and still travel relatively light. Just trying to think and prep for the worst while working for the best.

We haven't. Most times, I try and get a box or three when we go to town. It has been helping

Really handy for stacking deep -

The larger sizes get heavy in a hurry - beware.

Those plastic egg crates hold a lot of ammo and can be stacked but goodness they are heavy.
I have too many calibers! But I do have bullet casting equipment along with plenty of hard lead. Primers galore and plenty of powder.
Also a couple of bp guns and two cannons.

Or, you could buy a decent, used, single-stage reloading press, put in a supply of primers and powder and pick up a couple of Lee bullet molds for your most-used calibers and be good to go. This is a much, much cheaper option than buying factory ammo when you're trying to stack deep.

Best regards

20 gauge, you are doing pretty good. Few years ago, when we had a shop, bunch of customers hanging around, talking about SHTF & how much ammo they would need. One guy claimed he would take on a Chinese Airborne Div with his grand dad's 10 gauge. One guy asked him how much ammo he had for it, he said "plenty". Turned out he had 3 1/2 boxes. One of the guys said " your cooked ". There are plenty guys out there that think they have plenty, and don't have enough for one small firefight.

I played magazine loader and general factotum for my wife in an Awerbuck carbine class once upon a time. There were about 30 students in the class, and some were using commercial or home brewed reloads. As a three day class, the round count was 1000 per student. As I recall there was but one student shooting something other than an AR (an M-1 carbine, WW2 vintage, which had its rear sight shoot loose).

Have you ever thought about the many ways a backed out/blown primer can tie up an AR-15? Since I was a repeat student and not shooting this class, as well as loading my wife's magazines (thank you, LULA) Louis let me sort out failing guns for other students to save time. I pulled whole primers, cups and anvils out of barrel extensions, fire control mechanisms, lower receiver recesses etc. for three days. After that I swore I would NEVER use reloads in an AR I had to depend on.

I also used up all the oil I brought along (4 ounces), and put in one set of gas rings for a student with a very experienced AR. First time I ever saw one fail the bolt test, too (remove carrier assy, stand on the bolt face on a hard surface and let the weight of the asssembly rest on the bolt - if it rotates/closes the gas rings need attention).

I agree. For serious defensive work, I want factory loads. Reloads are fine for most bolt guns, range, etc. but if possible combat, I want factory stuff. Buy by the case, stacked, it is ready to go. If Antifa / Ghetto apes come marching up the street, will not be time to start cranking out reloads.

Speaking of, what is a good source for 7.62 strippers? I only have 20, far more ammo than that.

At one time, Centerfire Systems, or Aim Surplus. Don't know about now. If they do not have them, they could probably steer you to a good source. Hope that helps

^^^WISDOM^^^ - ammo is like $$$$$ in the bank - how much is "TOO MUCH" of that?

Knew a guy in Iraq, his squad went through 14,000 rounds in 30 minutes. Of coursse that included belted. Good thing they had extra ammo in the hummers.

to kind of "hitch hike" on the OP -

what's the common consensus as regards the recommended MINIMUM # rounds per battle rifle?

I'm thinking 15 30 round mags and 5000 rounds/weap MINIMUM . . . am I in the ball park?

I was going with 1k per rifle so that if we left, we could carry it for the hand guns and rifles

A GI basic load of magazines X2 as a minimum, And ammo enough for four basic loads.

Those numbers will vary by platform. An M1-A = 5 20 round magazines for a basic load (4 in pouches, 1 in the rifle) x 2 = 10 magazines, 10 20 round magazines = 200 rounds X 4 = at least 800 rounds on hand for real. Training and practice ammo as needed...

AR? Basic load is 7 30 round magazines (in in the rifle, 6 in pouches) x 2 = 14 magazines, = 420 rounds to fill those magazines. And tell me again how much 5.56 a 30 cal ammo can holds? 420 rounds you say? What a COINKYDINK! And 4 X 420 = 1680 rounds of go to war ammo, plus training and practice ammo on top of that.

And so on, for each different platform supported. YMMV, works for me to figure minimums.

thanks Doz . . . appreciate the reassurance - IMO always best to be a little "fat" - at least in some areas

SKS 500 rounds of new, consistent ammo. Over 700 rounds of assorted on sale stuff.
9mm 250 rounds hollow point, couple hundred assorted.
12 ga 00 flitecontrol 250 rounds and some assorted.
Squeezed an order in before end of year, money was short. Still spent $400.
Figure if I run out of ammo and I’m still alive, I should have been able to have picked up something.
