Hundreds of children being admitted to Arizona hospitals for COVID-19

PHOENIX - "Parents, please make good choices to keep your children and the community safe" are the words said by a spokesperson for Banner Health as she says hundreds of children with COVID-19 in Arizona are being admitted into hospitals each month.

In a Twitter thread Sunday, Jan. 17, Becky Armendariz, a public relations specialist for Banner Health, says hundreds of children with COVID-19 are being hospitalized each month and numbers are growing from December and January cases.

She didn't provide specifics on the severity of children's illnesses but calls on parents to make responsible decisions when it comes to the health of their little ones.

Armendariz said she wrote the tweet while looking out the window and watched a youth soccer tournament with "Kids and refs not masked. Parents with masks under chins, chatting/cheering away in close proximity to others."

She shared data by Jama Network showing how pediatric numbers relating to COVID-19 have trended in Arizona. Jama Network looked at trends where children are being diagnosed with COVID-19 in 22 states, including Arizona.

"At the beginning of the study, the average cumulative hospitalization rate per 100 000 children was 2.0, increasing to 17.2 by the end of the study," the study reads.

At the end of the study, Arizona ranked as one of two hot spots for children contracting COVID-19. "Hawaii and New Hampshire had the lowest rates at 4.3 and 3.4 per 100 000 respectively and South Dakota and Arizona had the highest rates at 33.7 and 32.8 per 100 000."

The study looked at numbers between the dates May 15, 2020, and November 15, 2020.

Newborn baby in Arizona contracts serious COVID-19 case Maria Espinoza says her newborn baby was hospitalized for several days following a COVID-19 diagnosis, and doctors say, unfortunately, more severe child cases are becoming more and more common.

"My heart broke. I cried every day," Espinoza said as her 27-day old baby came down with a high fever, moaning throughout the night, and refusing to sleep.

"I took him to two different hospitals. The first one told me he was just constipated. They said, 'don't worry, take him home.'"

His symptoms continued to worsen. In the middle of the night, Espinoza rushed him to the children's hospital.

"Mother intuition, I was like, 'no, there is something really wrong with my baby,'" she said. Sure enough, there was something wrong. He had COVID-19.

Family physician Dr. Andrew Carroll says the increasing number of children with COVID is "pretty significant," adding, "I know from reports from my pediatric colleagues that they are starting to see their hospitals get pretty overwhelmed with children with COVID."

He believes one of the reasons for the drastic increase in child hospitalizations is due to more and more schools returning to in-person learning and continuing with sports.

One of the other reasons, he says, is the new variants of the virus from the United Kingdom and Africa are spreading more quickly among children.

"When you have something that is just so darn contagious go up by about 50%, those people that thought they couldn't get sick, those people are getting sick now," he explained.

As for Espinoza, she says she knows exactly how her newborn got exposed to COVID-19. On Christmas Day, a relative stopped by who had gotten tested for the virus without telling anyone, they later found out that her test came back positive.

Now, she's issuing a word of caution to others, especially parents, to take this virus seriously.

"If you think you might have COVID, stay home, quarantine yourself. 'Cause my son could have died just for that one person that came over," she said.

Espinoza says she also got COVID-19 from that relative, as did her other two kids. One of them she says had symptoms, the other did not.

Doctors say the virus impacts each child differently.

I am not sure what I am reading here. If totally true, one would think it would be shouted from the rooftops long before this.

I would think this is factual. I believe the second "wave" of the Spanish Flu was the worst and affected kids. So if this virus, which is acting in similar manners, may be following the same path.

You don't have seasonal flu because the flu is transmitted more by fomites. We are not shaking hands or getting close to people. We are wearing masks, sanitizing our hands and coughing/sneezing more cautiously.

Now one thing that will come out of this is the battlespace on our hands. Bacteria are gonna get stronger.

I wonder if they are getting bacterial pneumonia or strep too from wearing masks all day at school. The schools in my area don’t require the children to wear masks in class and recess. The school district my husband works at, the kids wear them full time.

No one dares cough in public anymore.

Might want to start paying attention to how often people in masks touch those damp itchy cloths. Not rocket science to suspect that the mask wearing itself spreads more germs, AND provides a favorable environment right next to the nose and mouth for those germs to survive and flourish. Moisture is an effective vector for crossing the cloth barrier. I'm waiting for reports of mass Staff infections. I think it will happen - permanent disfigurement on faces, young and old. :(

A German study involving over 25,000 children reveals that major negative impacts on the physical, psychological, and behavioral health of children may be far more widespread than reported in the media and by government officials -- affecting approximately 68% and contributing to 24 distinct health complaints, according to parent submitted observations.

A concerning study conducted in Germany has been posted online as a preprint (not yet peer-reviewed) titled, “Corona children studies "Co-Ki": First results of a Germany-wide registry on mouth and nose covering (mask) in children,” describing the results of 17,854 parent submitted reports on health complaints or impairments experienced as a result of wearing masks by their 25,930 children.

The study was designed to both explore the accumulating narratives reported by parents, educators, and doctors about increasing problems and health complaints in children and adolescents wearinng masks, as well as to provide the first known online registry where parents, doctors, teachers, and others can enter their first-hand observations. The registry and the questionnaire can be found online at www.co-ki-masken.de

The study authors stated:
“There are no manufacturer-independent studies on the use of masks for children and adolescents that are certified as medical products for occupational safety in professional applications. In addition, due to the unknown materials used, there are no findings on the potential protective effects or side effects of the often home-made "everyday masks" worn by the majority of children. In view of the ongoing measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, and in particular the varying obligations for children and adolescents to wear masks in school over a longer period of time, there is an urgent need for research.”
On October 20th, 2020, 363 doctors were asked to make entries and inform parents and teachers of the existence of the registry.

The data recorded in the registry included information regarding the role of the registrant, demographic data, previous illnesses, situation and duration of mask wearing, type of mask, existence of complaints from the child about an impairment via the mask, symptoms, behavioral problems, and the respondent’s personal attitude to corona protection measures of the government.

On average, children wore masks for 270 minutes a day, with impairments being reported at nearly the same rate by the children (67.7%) as the parents (66.1%).

The study results were summarized as follows:
“By 26.10.2020 the registry had been used by 20,353 people. In this publication we report the results from the parents, who entered data on a total of 25,930 children. The average wearing time of the mask was 270 minutes per day. Impairments caused by wearing the mask were reported by 68% of the parents. These included irritability (60%), headache (53%), difficulty concentrating (50%), less happiness (49%), reluctance to go to school/kindergarten (44%), malaise (42%) impaired learning (38%) and drowsiness or fatigue (37%)."
The childrens' complaints were reported across 24 distinct symptoms as follows:

/snipping extensive table, refer to it at the link/

The authors of the ended their report with the following concluding remarks:

"Many children are subject to great challenges and families try to master these as best they can. While the proportion of people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and also the number of intensive care patients in Germany is high in many places, we report here on a relatively small, unrepresentative problem: several thousand children who seem to suffer from wearing the mask or who may experience health problems from the mask. Our study provides the basis for a representative survey on which a precise benefit-risk analysis of mask wearing in children can be built."

I can't stand the selfishness of people like that. It would be a cold day in hell before that woman was allowed near my baby again.
