Grnhouse How to Survive Winter | Grow Food in -40° in a Passive Solar Greenhouse

Cool video, thanks for posting.

He didn't say what/how he feeds the fish, so presumably that'd be an expense.

DH wouldn't want to mess with "livestock" (fish would count, in his book), but I'd love to have a large solar greenhouse.

I've read that tilapia feed off of grass clippings, so maybe you could grow that in a greenhouse too.

You have to be a nutcase if you don't use a hydroponic dry salt mix. So little is required. Try 400 grams for 100 liters of water.

Hydroponic dry salt mixes in general don't contain any silica. So I add rock dust to my beds . I buy somewhat in bulk so it costs me $8 a kg delivered.

You can use less if you are adding other stuff.

Spray it onto the leaves for real economy.

I have an empty greenhouse (my husband wants to tear down, BOOOO!!!) and I would LOVE to attempt something like this.

I’ve learned that in Indiana there just is not enough sun from nov-Feb to grow anything. Things that have already grown will just sort of go into stasis.

Scott and Helen Nearing grew greenhouse food in Maine.

Ok, last Christmas I planted peas, carrots and greens. They were ready to eat 1 week before the same things I planted 3rd week in Feb. they happily sprout, come up and sit under endlessly cloudy days….

What works great is the plant those things in aug/sept and they are almost at maturity by winter solstice and fresh greens till ya run out! So, it’s a matter of strategy…and point is just because you have a nice warm greenhouse (my bananas and citrus just sit doing nothing…even though I can easily hit 95+ if the sun just shines for 45 minutes), it’s no guarantee that you can actually make food with out artificial light.

Also, Maine may have sun in winter??? We have clouds…lots of them.

I lived in Fairbanks AK for 3 years. Winters got to 50 below.
Personal experience showed me that it is easier and more enjoyable to
simply move somewhere it never gets to 40 below.

Maybe I am overthinking it.
- Nope.
My sis is still in North Pole (just east of Fairbanks) where that's the usual winter temp, raising her 3 grands AND teaching high school disabled AND just won a national award for her work AND grows a garden including managing to actually really truly grow artichokes! She's something else.

And here I am luxuriating in mere minus 20s and 30s and hoping the corn gets ripe! ;) I always enjoy Canadian Prepper.

CC thank you for posting...a winter greenhouse is a long-term goal. Maybe I can move it up on the agenda.

Take an in-depth look inside my underground greenhouse. See inside my Walipini. Hello everyone, Welcome to my Walipini AKA Underground Greenhouse. Today is Jan. 1, 2020 & I’m going to give you a tour of my walipini. 1st I need to warn you that even though the walipini was built over 2 yrs ago, it is still in the early stages of development. My goal this year is to make some solid improvements to the underground greenhouse so I can grow trees & plans year-round. Be sure to click the subscribe button below to get updates throughout the yr. Before I start the tour, let me tell you more about where I live. My Walipini is located in Eagle Mtn, UT. The elev. here is aprox 4,900 ft above sea level.

Eagle Mtn. is in the USDA Hardiness Zones 6a, 6b & 7a. Before we step inside, I’ll show you what we’ve done on the exterior. As you can see, we’ve carved out a section in the natural slope of our yard pouring concrete footings & foundation. Let me tell you something, that was a bill. Also, if I could do it again, I would have sloped the roof more. I’ll talk more about that in a future video. Then if you look over here, we’ve added concreate steps leading down into the greenhouse. Let me tell you something, that was a bill. Then, we ran power & a water line which is attached to our sprinkler system under the foundation wall. That means we have yr-round power & water during the spring, summer & fall. Now, let me show you the roof.

Here’s some video taken earlier when there was no snow so you can actually see what we’ve done. Looking at the door, you’ll see we’ve added a door with a window for airflow & stairs leading down into the greenhouse. I’ve placed buckets to catch the water coming off the roof. Today the temp outside is 32 degrees. Let’s step inside to see what the temp is & then, I’ll tell you more about the greenhouse from the inside. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe & ring the bell to be notified each time I produce new videos.

My brother, with whom I live and for whom I do all the outside and inside work and keep the bacon coming.....has made all my gardens / raised beds possible. I think I need to move things up cuz I do know what I need for survival growing....and he'd be on board - though he is full-on carnivore.

It gets awfully cold here but my hope (I know...not a plan) is that it keeps at least some of the less desirables away.
