How smart are dogs???

I was given a bunch of hot peppers the other day and had to do something with them quick. Last night after work I cut them up so they'd be ready to can when I woke up this morning. I got up and decided I better run to the store before I got started. Keep in mind that we are keeping our daughter's dog here for awhile, and she chews something up almost every time I leave the house. I always leave a stack of old newspapers on the corner of the coffee table just for that purpose, and it usually works out good. I've also been leaving the radio on lately and that seemed to be helping. I left in such a hurry that I forgot to turn the radio on. When I got home my two dogs came to greet me, but my daughter's didn't. Right then I knew she was in trouble! I walked into the living room and found a mess. Pillows and blankets thrown all over the place like she usually does, and pieces of something laying all over the couch and floor. When I got closer I could tell it was a book and was afraid it was one of my granddaughter's good hardbacks. Noooooooooo, it was my canning book!!!! That book has been laying on the kitchen table since I got it at a yard sale two weeks ago, and hasn't been touched. Now the day I'm going to use it the dog grabs it and chews it to shreds!!!!!!!!!! Somebody tell me that the dog didn't know what I was going to be doing today! She never chews anything of mine and never takes anything off the kitchen table except food when I'm not around. I swear she knew I was going to be using it and chewed it on purpose! I had to laugh because it was too much of a coincidence to believe, but I can't wait for this beast to outgrow this stage!

Your poor canning book! :bwl: I thought you were going to say that the dog ate all of the peppers. I'm not sure which would be worse.

We have 4 dogs, all inside/outside ones. One came to us as an adult--whew! Two of them we got as puppies and now they're older and much bigger but still in the puppy stage. The other one is still a little puppy and doesn't listen worth a darn yet. Oh, yeah, I can sympathize!

It's a dog conspiracy, ya know! ;)

That's what I'm thinking too!!! She must have been really mad at me this time! Maybe it would have been better if she had eaten the hot peppers. If she had burned her little heinie maybe she'd think twice about doing anything like that again!

I too just knew the dog had eaten the peppers!

We found the cure for our 2 yr. old Spaniel/Austrian Shepherd's munchies. We got 2 kittens and he loves them. He thinks they are his and he hasn't chewed up anything else since they came to live with us.

We have 3 cats and 2 other dogs that you would think would keep The Beast company when I'm gone, but it's not working that way. Even when my husband is sleeping upstairs the dog flips out. I would think she'd just go up with him while I'm gone. One of these days I want to sneak on the porch and watch in the window to see her in action. The way the pillows and blankets are thrown around the room I think it would be a riot to see it. But I really do feel bad that she's that upset . She's getting a little better though. Once in awhile I can leave and she won't do anything, but I haven't been able to figure out what's different those times than the times that she does get upset.

Our Nixie would especially do something really nasty when we were upstairs and left him downstairs. When we moved into the 1 story about a month ago, (also got the kittens at the same time), we figured he wasn't as lonely and therefore didn't need to get attention by distruction.

The Beast did pretty darn good today! I went to town for about 15 minutes and she didn't do anything that time. I remembered to turn the radio on. Then one of my daughters called and asked me to go out of town shopping with her. I was on pins and needles the whole time because we were gone about 5 hours. My husband stopped in once, and when I talked to him on the cell phone he said everything looked ok. That was about half way through our trip. When we got home, my daughter came in the house first and I heard her bust out laughing. There was a hot pepper on the couch and one on the love seat. Three more were hid under the pillows. Two had a bite taken out of them. I don't know how many there were to begin with. A guy I work with had given them to me yesterday, and I put the bag on the dishwasher without looking inside. The dog is licking her behind as I write!!! Maybe now she'll learn!!!
