How do you know when it's time

we always judged the ripness of our corn by the tassles that stick out of the end of the ear. when they start to turn brow thats what we looked for.

onions on the other hand are good from the time the greens are about a foot tall until the greens all die out. oninions like potatoes can last under the ground yp until winter.

hope this helps!

Hi Melissa,

The corn silk coming out of the end of the cob will turn a little brown.
Test one of your ears and peel back the husk and check it out.
Pick the corn as it's needed - the fresher off the stalk - the better.

For onions - you didn't say what kind of onions, but for the large
onions, you can somewhat see how large they are. I always used
a shovel to loosen the dirt first - made it easier to lift out.
Test one or two. If it's too small - eat the one you pulled, but give
the others a few more weeks. Onions can stay around in the ground
a while without harm.

When you do pull the onions - lay them out on the dirt where they grew
and let them alone on the ground for a day or two. This lets them season
a bit, and taste better.

Hope this helps. LeViolinist

Onions you could harvest at any time, but if they are still growing you might not want to. I cure mine on a tarp in the basement. I cut off the roots but leave the leaves. They are cured when the leaves have shriveled up.

With onions wait until the tops have fallen over and are starting to not look so good. They'll start to bulb more after this point. Then pull them out and dry them in a warm dry place until the tops shrivel up and die.

I can't help you with the corn, we always seem to pick it at the wrong time!

Thanks for all the replys. My corn's hairs are browning, yet when I peeled back the leaves on the ear, the kernels were still white. I planted late, I am about 6 weeks behind, I think. I planted in late May. Most of my stalks are over 6 ft, though. I have also been giving all the veggies a regular diet of Miracle Grow.

Melissa, did you plant white corn? It doesn't all turn yellow you know. I pop a kernel with my fingernail and if it squirts juice and smell "corny" I pick and eat. If the kernels fill the ear to the top end and all are plump and juicy it's probably ready. BYW the "hair" is called silk.
