…… How Do I delete my Facebook account?

Mary

My Drawing of Monet
Can someone tell me how I can permanently delete my facebook account? I don't want to be on there anymore but there seems to be no way to do it.

Is there a way to do it from my computer settings instead of going into FB itself?

I really, really want out -

Thanks,
Mary

When you have a Facebook account you have information on Facebook's web servers. You do not want to leave that info out there. You need to cancel through Facebook itself. Maybe someone here can give you guidance on that aspect.

from the webpage:

How do I permanently delete my account?

If you don't think you'll use Facebook again, you can request to have your account permanently deleted. Please keep in mind that you won't be able to reactivate your account or retrieve anything you've added. Before you do this, you may want to download a copy of your info from Facebook. Then, if you'd like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log into your account and let us know.

When you delete your account, people won't be able to see it on Facebook. It may take up to 90 days to delete all of the things you've posted, like your photos, status updates or other data stored in backup systems. While we are deleting this information, it is inaccessible to other people using Facebook.

Some of the things you do on Facebook aren’t stored in your account. For example, a friend may still have messages from you even after you delete your account. That information remains after you delete your account.

I read an article where fb can now take all your info from your phone, contacts, text messages, who you've called and what websites you visit. This is a violation of my 1st amendment rights and I want off now!

Is it that once you signed on, you can never get off? And if so, how do I stop them from going into my phone? Shut off the Wifi connection?

Someone here has to know how to do this. I already googled it and it the directions do not work. There's nothing on the page itself, I just don't want it to have full reign over my phone and where I go online.

Gawd....!!!!! This is not right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All you can do is go to account settings and hit deactivate.. It will ask for your password and tell you that you can log on again any time.

Just click here:

https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account

That will delete your account.

DO NOT sign in again. Before you delete the account, be sure to delete any bookmarks on your computer or phone, and delete the facebook app if you have it.
These can sometimes automatically log you in.

If you visit facebook within a couple months of deleting your account, they may reactivate it for you.

I never gave them permission to look into my phone. I only setup FB for work. I no longer work there and don't need it now. I have no friends on there and it's under an assumed name.

I never accessed it from my phone - so does this mean they still can get into my phone and see my contacts, who I've called/text'd etc???

bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppp!!!!

I don't understand. I can sign off these boards if I want. I can sign off LinkedIN if I want. Why can't I get off FB? I don't accept "no" for an answer!

You can't get off of FB becausze they don't want you to. They make it nearly impossible to do so.

However, if you used an assumed name and don't have anything personal on it, just leave it there to languish.

Sozo, I went there and it says I have to sign in to continue. So no luck there. I don't have it bookmarked on my computer. I have no app on my phone for that place. I have some game apps and a few other stupid things (all free, I'll delete them if I have to). Oh, and believe me I will never go there again - no more likes, no more anything! Dennis, I will do that no prob. But what gives them the right to know all my phone numbers and follow me around the web checking out what I'm doing? I read the terms and agreements and it said nothing about that in there back a few years ago.

I mean, really - I can't get out - EVER? I just have to let it be and never use it again? What about the email it is associated with, should I delete that?

Good Morning, Mary

Used the link provided, and supposedly, my "archive" is being downloaded, and will be sent by email to my account. We'll see... I've been wanting to do the same for several years now, and finally have the time...

Best of luck, and God Bless You, Mary...

I was on fb years ago for a very short time. Did not like it. Went to their delete account and thought it was deleted. It wasn't. I started looking around and found a link deep into it. I really had to look. I think that did the job. There is no sign of me on there. But they may have changed it. Anyway look deep. The easy delete account is not permanent.

There was a dust-up a year or so ago, in that FB was planting a cookie on your PC that DID track where you browsed and sent that info back to FB. I don't know if they still do that, but the solution IIRC was to delete all cookies and never go back to your FB account.

Did you watch the video? It's only about 2 minutes long and this guy says they get into your phone. I text my family a lot and it's no big deal what we say, but it's still none of their business. What is happening to our rights as FREE Americans? I have a niece who has no email, no computer, and a flip phone from the 1800s, she is so off grid and she gets by just fine. Yep you do have to log in. Their final screen asks you if you are sure and then asks once more for your password and to type the scrambled letters in an authentication box. Once you do that and click continue, you are logged off and get a screen that says you have a few days to log back in again and reactivate your account. If you don't do that it will be permanently deleted, or at least no longer visible to others. I have no doubt that it and data associated with it will always be on facebook servers.

Okay, I'm going to try again - think I'm going to implode, but I'll go back. However, i like Dennis' idea of never going there again and let it slowly fade away, that is if they can't get to your phone, which is my concern - like I need my old colleagues (and hopefully new ones), friends and family (who I don't call that much anyway) getting messages or texts or on some call list because of me. That wouldn't be fair to them or me - I could lose some people I value if it did.

Just a few things, Mary.

I'm not an "expert" in any stretch of the imagination, so please don't take everything I say as 100% gospel. With that being said;

When you sign up for Facebook, you enter into an agreement. It is your responsibility to read the fine print and make the determination of if you're willing to allow the dissemination of your information.

Your PC and the Internet have a relationship. Your browser is a bridge/portal for that relationship. With the exception of various files cached on your PC, Facebook is 100% online and can't be affected by any setting on your PC, except browser settings.

I'm a bit confused in your reference the First Amendment rights. Now, as I've said I'm no expert, but do you mean Fourth Amendment? In any case and I mean this in the nicest way, when you're on the internet, especially a social media site, that you entered into an agreement with, you have no rights. It's a private domain, your speech can be limited, your information recorded. It's no different than being on private property.

As far as your cellphone, FB doesn't have access to it, unless you've visited via your phones browser or downloaded a FB related app. They don't have the infrastructure or abilities to access your phone otherwise.

As far as cookies go, most websites used cookies. It how your login information is retained...among other information.

In closing, if you're concerned about your rights, privacy and how they're affected by electronics use...that phone, which in most likely an Android or iPhone is far worse than FB. Your information can be intercepted via MIM attack (Stingwray), it's on a mobile carriers network, and it's a phone produced by companies.

I think everything we post on TB is stored. A no.1 hacker couldn't get into TB stored material if the feds demanded it?

Anything you post on the net is usually there permanently unless carefully deleted and even then, it may be retrievable.

I've read over and over again to never post anything on the net anywhere that you don't want seen by others.

I did read the terms and agreements, as I stated above, that was approximately 4 years ago. I didn't see anything in there about them accessing your phone contacts, texts or gathering info on you regarding the websites you visit, unless you "like" them.

Your PC and the Internet have a relationship. Your browser is a bridge/portal for that relationship. With the exception of various files cached on your PC, Facebook is 100% online and can't be affected by any setting on your PC, except browser settings.

No, I mean the 1st amendment, which includes privacy, iirc... And I am not the type of person who says anything horrible about anyone or anything except when it comes to politics. I try to be as polite as possible when I disagree with someone, which usually means i say nothing. And I subscribe to the saying "It is better to be kind than right" whenever I can, unless its DH (kidding dh!) I know what I say on here is for the most part civil, unless I'm on a rant, like right now. If you'd like look up some of my older posts and you'll see I never get all up in anyone's face, even when they're all over me.

As far as your cellphone, FB doesn't have access to it, unless you've visited via your phones browser or downloaded a FB related app. They don't have the infrastructure or abilities to access your phone otherwise.

The link I provided says FB *can* get into your cellphone, which was my concern. That's why I want off. I don't say anything on Fb that i wouldn't want on the front page of my local newspaper either. And I don't have a FB app on my phone, as I said above. It's just when I saw this video I became concerned that FB found a way to get my contacts and texts and they have no right to do that - it's not on their page, I did not agree to it when I signed up with them. My phone has nothing to do with Fb or anything online for that matter. What if this guy is right and they are listening in on your phone calls? That is not Ok with me.

As far as cookies go, most websites used cookies. It how your login information is retained...among other information.

Yes, I know this. That is why I make sure my computer is empty when I'm done for the day. Or as empty as can be.

I would suggest you log into your Facebook account.

Delete posts and other data

Delete photos and replace them with generic photos of some cute puppy

Log out and wait two months, I don't know how far back they retain archives the stuff on your page but this will give it time to have many backups with new information you placed there.

After several weeks/months go back to FB, log-in and delete your account. Do not go back to FB within the wait period as this will reactivate your account, it says so in their instructions.

Now come the hard part this requires cooperation from friends and family.

Ask them to delete and photos of yourself they have posted to their FB pages, ESPECIALLY if those photos have been tagged by your friends & family with your name "Mary Smith" for example. You see Facebook is building a library of identified photographs. Your imager is scanned and tagged for facial recognition purposes, why? who the hell knows for sure?

I went through this many months ago, I still don't know if any former co-workers have photos with me in the photo and labeled with my name, for example a photo of three of us that is labeled thusly for example, "On the right is Double_A, in the middle is Ted Stevens and on the right is Jack Black"

1. Stop reading tabloid websites and believing everything they say.

2. The evil geniuses at FB are not hunting down your phone to hack it and get your personal info. They collect and use whatever info you choose to put on FB or other accounts that you connect to FB. Don't want someone to collect and use it? Don't put it on the internet anywhere.

3. How on earth is any of this connected to your "1st amendment rights?" I think you need to re-read the Bill of Rights.

4. I think a lot of people have a basic misunderstanding of the difference between your own computer and the internet. If you go anyplace online, you aren't on "your" computer, you're visiting on someone else's computer (server), like traveling in your car to visit someplace else. This forum, any website or forum, any place at all but your own C drive, is on someone else's computer and you leave virtual footprints everywhere you go. When you leave those footprints on other people's sites, they can collect them and analyze them, the same way that your neighbors can see you go to so-and-so's house and speculate about what you do there.

Everyone needs to quit freaking out and remember that the whole point of "social media" is to be social and spread your presence around. If you don't want your info spread around, then don't put it out there in the first place. They aren't sorcerers stealing your thoughts from thin air, they're programs collecting the stuff you provided.

Double A,

Thanks for your thoughts. As I said, I'm on it under another name and an email account I never use. There are no photos of me or anyone I know. I only used it for my job, which ended in Sept 2014. Haven't been there since, except for a few "likes" - which won't be happening again, ever. :)

Hans, I know what you say on any forums, message boards, or reviews can't be taken back. And if I don't like something, I don't tell the world. If I do, then I do let people know. What I write in here, TB, well, I've been a member since Gary North, Cory Hamanski and Ed Yourdan. When Dennis set up these boards I was so happy to have a place to go again. I like most of the people on here and am constantly amazed by the amount of knowledge that people have and how willing they are to share it; as I am with them when I know something that may help them; or if in UNEX well then, that's a different story, I just like it in there, all sorts of weird and cool stuff that i like reading and commenting on. You know how it is (smile)!

By the way and EVERYONE need to know this, your rights under the Bill of Rights, only applies to the Government and it's employees.

Facebook cannot violate your "Right to Privacy" that is a protection you are granted from the Government violating your right.

Furthermore your "terms & conditions" with facebook no doubt say the information you provide is THEIRS, this came up after they used Facebook members photos posted to their pages in Facebook advertising without your knowledge. This blew up in Facebooks face about a year or two ago.

Sat, That is a *fantastic* idea, I'm laughing right now at the thought of doing just that. But I won't. But it *is* really good for anyone who wants off FB, let them kick you off - what a brilliant mind!!!! :D

The free games are pinball and scramble, they are free so they can keep advertising to you at the bottom. And if you run out of "free" coins then you have to sign in and buy them. So, when I run out, I delete the program, wait a week and then go get it again. I don't care if they know I'm playing games on my phone. But I suppose you are right in a way, I am, we are all being sold.

So you think they are not accessing our cell phones and monitoring everyplace we go on the web?

M~~

Unless you have the FB app on your phone -- or gave them your phone number when they asked on the webpage -- they can't access your phone.

As for tracking everywhere you go on the web - think in reverse: every web site you visit (say, for instance, Cabelas) sets a cookie, in your browser based on your login. Because Cabela's buys advertising space on FB - if you look at FB for anything you'll see ads from places you've been/bought from lately. Yeah. PITA.

But, it's not just FB. I see those same ads on Zerohedge. And google is just as bad.
You can minimize a lot of the instrusion by going into your FB settings and upping your privacy.

But for the most part, realize there isn't a human looking at all of this. FB collects it with a script, saves bits of data in the database, and then uses that to convince advertisers to buy adspace, by using the database itself - to determine what to show YOU, based on stuff you've "liked".

Now, Amazon is where this started. Back in the mid-90s, hubs and I started using Amazon pretty frequently. They kept track of what we bought. Now, that's not nefarious in most our perspectives - it seems more like "good customer service", right? But then, they took it a step further: now they were going to "predict" what we might like enough to buy... sigh.

Some of us just aren't that predictable.

But this was how they were able to be worth investment in the stock market, than just an online website of e-commerce companies/products. When FB started, there weren't any ads. At all. But now, your online activity - even odd things that you wouldn't ordinarily look at, except you think "hey it's private here in my computer" - this is valuable meta-data for marketers.

Is it intrusive? We all have our lines where it is/isn't. Even me. The only other option is to not have a computer, don't go online, and give up the smart phone. Which is the only way we can keep banks from continuing to move on with their campaign to get us all to use digital money. Sorry! Don't have a smart phone! Nope, no computer either! I still need to use checks, and come to the bank to deposit/withdraw money.

You have to admit: that strategy has it's attractions.

Yep one of the largest if not the single largest collectors of data from mobile devices is the "FLASHLIGHT" app for your iphone or Android phone. These do nothing more than suck up everybit of personal info in your Smart phone and send it to marketing database to be sold to others.

Delete it immediately and get yourself a small keychain flashlight (and use AAA lithium batts in it for reliability) or get yourself a Photon Freedom light which uses a lithium coincell.

Saca,

You know, I used to go to Amazon and put things in my cart that I liked, and then just signed out without buying anything. I did this because I noticed that the more you do that, the more Amazon was starting to pick up on what I wanted and suddenly the price went *way* down. That's when I'd buy it. I sort of turned the tables on them. Now, they do try and predict what I might buy. That's annoying.

I don't do any, any, any banking online. I don't do any CC stuff online either. just doesn't sit well with me. I use checks and stamps too - and below the stamp, I write: "Save a job, Use a Stamp" just for my own self satisfaction (sly grin).

There is only one thing that comes to the bank automatically, DH's pay. Seems you can't get around that anymore. His boss refuses to set him, and only him, up as a get a paper check. So we just let go of that, it's not worth the arguments.

D-A, I have that flashlight app, I will delete it when I get off the computer. I had no idea. What do they want. I mean, how do they collect data on where I use a flashlight. That seems silly. But, I'll get rid of it because I barely use it and thought the multi-cololred one was fun. Maybe I'll sell this phone and go back to the older ones. :shr:

It's getting rediculous, Mary. To the point, that hubs & I have 6 yr old phones and don't plan to upgrade - they make/receive calls and do text messaging just fine! And both have real keys to push - no touchscreen.

I like the forums; I like being able to research online. But other than that, I think I'm about ready to pull the plug. But I probably won't; I'm just as addicted as a 13 yr old. LOL.
