There seems to be a lot of interest in the Kangkong (water spinach)! So I figured I would do a video on the Kangkong as I am going to harvest a pot for cooking later today. Although Kangkong grows easily from seed, but being a busy employee, mother of two, with a lot of house chores and in between parenting duties, finding time to do succession planting and sowing of seeds is a daily challenge.

So for me, I always look out for cut and grow again varieties for my garden, this saves me time and the plant can continuously provide me with food! For the Kangkong, you can encourage cut and grow again provided you harvest it the right way. Typically if you uproot the Kangkong, you will have to sow seeds again for a new fresh pot. However, if you cut them the right way, you can get by with at least 3-4 cycles of harvest from the same pot! But having said that do remember that a potted plant can get root bound over time. It may be better to start afresh so the greens you grow will be healthier for consumption.

Kangkong, or water spinach, is an edible plant that is mostly used in Southeast Asian cooking. It has a nutty flavor similar to spinach. This is my favorite vegetable food since I was a kid

Water Spinach- we all know this green vegetable as Popeye’s favourite. But it is indeed a fact that water spinach is ranked high among the world’s healthiest foods and there are plenty of reasons for it being so. Also known as ‘kangkong’ or ‘swamp cabbage’, water spinach is one of the popular green leafy vegetables. It is basically herbaceous aquatic or semi aquatic perennial plant that is found in tropical and subtropical regions. There are generally two varieties of water spinach- the ‘Ching Quat’ having green stem, narrow leaves and white flowers and the ‘Pak Quat’ which has arrow shaped leaves and pink flowers. Though, all the parts of the young plant are edible, the tender shoot tips and the younger leaves are mostly preferred. In India, it is commonly known as ‘paani palak’.Just like other dark green leafy veggies, water spinach is a powerhouse of nutrients that benefit your body as well as your skin and brain. It contains abundant quantities of water, iron, vitamin C, vitamin A and other nutrients and can be eaten cooked or raw. It is mostly used in salads as well as other dishes to boost their nutrient content. Juice of water spinach is also very beneficial.

Health Benefits of Water Spinach: All dark green leafy vegetables are packed with nutrients and water spinach is no exception. The leaves of water spinach are extremely nutritious, containing abundant quantities of vitamins and minerals. They are excellent sources of dietary fiber, protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C which are evident of its various health benefits given below: 1. Reduces Cholesterol: It is an excellent option for those individuals who want to lose weight and reduce cholesterol naturally. A research conducted on rats has proved that consumption of water spinach has resulted in the reduction in cholesterol levels as well as Triglycoside. Thus, this vegetable has a major role to play in the reduction of cholesterol level.

2. Treatment of Jaundice and Liver Problems: Water spinach has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of jaundice and liver problems. A research has proved that the extract of this plant can provide protection against chemical induced liver damage due to its modulation of detoxification enzymes; antioxidant and free radical scavenger properties.

3. Useful in treating Anaemia: Being rich in iron, the young water spinach leaves are extremely beneficial for people with anaemia as well as pregnant women who require iron in their diets. Iron is an important mineral that is needed by the body, particularly by the red blood cells for the formation of haemoglobin.

4. Treatment of Indigestion and Constipation: Water spinach is rich in fiber and hence, it aids in digestion, providing relief from different digestive disorders naturally. Its mild laxative properties are beneficial for people suffering from indigestion and constipation. Juice from boiled spinach can loosen constipation. This vegetable is also used in the treatment of intestinal worm infestation. It contains latex which is used as a purgative agent.

5. Anti Diabetic: Researches have demonstrated that regular consumption of water spinach helps in developing resistance against diabetes induced oxidative stress. It is also used in the treatment of diabetes in pregnant women.


6. Protection against Heart Diseases: Water spinach has certain essential nutrients like vitamins A and C as well as a high concentration of beta-carotene. These nutrients act as antioxidants to reduce free radicals in the body, thus preventing cholesterol form becoming oxidized. Oxidized cholesterol sticks to the blood vessel walls, causing blocked arteries, heart attack or stroke. Besides, folate contained in water spinach helps to convert a potentially dangerous chemical called homocysteine, which in high levels can lead to heart attack or stroke. Magnesium is a mineral that lowers blood pressure and provides protection against heart disease as well.

7. Prevention of Cancer: Being loaded with 13 different types of antioxidant compounds, water spinach is a perfect diet for prevention of cancer. These antioxidants are known to eliminate free radicals from the body, thus altering the conditions in which cancer cells multiply and strengthen the natural cell environment. This vegetable is said to be most beneficial in the prevention of colo-rectal and stomach cancers as well as skin and breast cancers.

8. Beneficial for Eyes: Water spinach has a high content of carotenoids, vitamin A and lutein. These nutrients are vital for eye health. Sowing Guide



Direct seed or transplants may be used. In warmer locations, it can be grown as a perennial. In cool to cold locations, it can be grown as an annual or as a greenhouse plant. It does very well in hydroponic systems and is an excellent permaculture plant.

It grows so fast and easily, and tastes so good, that anyone in a temperate climate could grow this plant indoors in winter and outside in summer.





Water Spinach does not do well where average temperatures drop below 10°C, and do much better when the temperature is between 20 to 30°C. It tolerates very high rainfall, but not frost.


Soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing to encourage germination. Seeds can be sown directly or seedlings transplanted into the beds. Soil temperature requirement for germination is 20°C.



To produce strong seedlings, seed should be sown 5mm deep in trays with potting mix deep enough to allow the plants to develop a good root system. Transplant when plants are 10 to 15cm tall with four true leaves.

Plant stems are not strong, but plants grown in beds support each other and produce longer stems with less branching. Highest yields are obtained by spacing plants at 15 x 15cm. They can also be grown in rows about 30cm apart

Water spinach needs much more water than most other vegetable crops. This increased irrigation can leach out readily available nutrients, so it is recommended to use slow-release forms of fertility. Where rainfall is low, frequent heavy irrigations are necessary for high quality shoots.



The plants grow to around 30cm tall with trailing stems that can grow to 2 to 3 meters (6 to 10ft) long.

If you live in warmer locations, you may need to contain the plants or harvest often to keep it from spreading too much. It has long, jointed and hollow stems, which allow the vines to float on water or creep across muddy ground. Adventitious roots are formed at nodes which are in contact with water or moist soil. Harvesting for human consumption is the best method, by far.

Harvest 30 to 60 days after sowing, depending on climate and culture.



Water Spinach can be harvested completely or in a cut-and-come-again manner. Plants are harvested by cutting the stem close to the ground. Shoots regrow readily and growers should get two to three cuttings of water spinach before frost.



Water Spinach is always best when used very fresh. It is very perishable and deteriorates rapidly once picked, and only stores in the refrigerator for about a day or two. It can be used as fodder for animals, including pigs, chicken and ducks.
